Overview Minerals and minerals processing are major economic drivers for the South West. region of Western Australia. Mining was valued at $2.073 billion in 2011/2012, an increase of 27 per cent on the previous year. The region is well equipped with ready access to reliable gas and electricity supplies, industrial land, resources and efficient road and rail connections to the Bunbury Port. Mining projects are world ranked. The South West accounts for about 10% of the world’s alumina production and almost half the value of sales from Western Australia. Collie produces 100% of WA’s coal supply and 71% of the State’s coal-fired base load electricity. The world’s largest producer of lithium, supplying 30% of world demand and 80% of China’s requirements, is located at Greenbushes. Other world-ranked products are tantalum, zircon, rutile and ilmenite. The South West is also the home of choice for a high number of FIFO workers. Northern mine sites are serviced by 19 direct flights per week from the Busselton airport. About 2 per cent of the region’s 61,000 strong workforce is employed in the local mining sector. Western Australia’s first carbon capture and storage project, the Collie Hub, is located in the South West.
