NEW RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT
Rilda and Ben Chatfield moved into Crossroads apartment 615 on Tuesday, December 13. Rilda was born in
Missouri and grew up in Illinois, where she graduated from Seneca High School in 1948. She studied nursing in
Chicago and later took courses at the University of Washington. After completing her nursing studies in 1952
she traveled to Alaska to work as a nurse. She met Ben there. In addition to raising two children, Rilda has
been active in community affairs. She has been in leadership positions with the Arlington Commission on
Aging and with TACTS, a domestic violence program. She now volunteers at the Virginia Hospital Center.
Ben grew up in Fairfield, Connecticut and graduated from Roger Ludlowe High School in 1947. He achieved a
BS in civil engineering from Stanford University in 1951 and later returned for an MSCE and a PhD. He began
work on highway location and design at the Alaska Road Commission (ARC) in 1951. Leaving Alaska in 1953
he spent two years in the Army and returned to the ARC in 1956. He and Rilda married in 1958, shortly before
Alaska became a state and ARC became part of the Bureau of Public Roads (BPR). They moved to Ethiopia in
1961 where he spent two years helping to establish the Imperial Highway Authority before coming to Arlington
in 1963. He continued with the BPR which became the Federal Highway Administration, focusing in highway
safety after 1969. He has been involved with Kiwanis and Sister Cities and remains interested in
genealogy. Both Chatfields enjoy both duplicate and social bridge and look forward to joining groups here at

Japan’s extraordinary culture is like no other in the world. The
2,000-year-old civilization grew through periods of seclusion and
assimilation to cultivate a society responsible for immeasurable
influences on the rest of the world. What makes Japan so
distinctive? The answer is more than just spiritual beliefs or
culinary tastes. It’s the ongoing clash between tradition and
modernity; a conflict shaped by Japan’s long history of
engagement and isolation. Wednesday, January 18, at 3:00 p.m.
in the Media Room. (12 week series)

COMMUNITY CORNER Whenever a visitor or a resident asks how to find the Board Room, Game Room, Pool,
Fitness Center, Clinic, or Resident Services office, I point them to the Atrium and use the
“Iron Lady” as a landmark, for she guards the way to all of these areas. Caroline Hufford-
Anderson, the resident artist who created this fantastic statue, has named her masterpiece
“Woman Power”. When, at the age of 40, Caroline began to seriously study art, she began to focus on the
medium of steel and served as an apprentice at a commercial welding shop. Wanting to make something
really big and being surrounded by male workers, she was inspired to sculpt a figure that would convey a
sense of female strength. “Woman Power” is indeed an appropriate name. Although not a member of the
GHBC Security team, she certainly could be considered as such since she moves her head around as if to
oversee the entrance to the rooms beyond.
But, our “Woman Power” is not the only sculpture by Caroline Hufford-Anderson located at GHBC. After
the tragic loss of her son in 1994, she helped create a Healing Garden at the Whitman-Walker clinic in
Arlington. The clinic later closed, and the sculpture she created for that garden named “The Promise” is
now in our Knoll Garden. On the next sunny day, stroll over to the upper part of our Knoll Garden and
share “The Promise” created by one of our own.
(Additional information about the life of Caroline Hufford-Anderson can be found on our Resident Website
written by Claudia Blake.)
