Describe Setting

This building is located in the Beverly Historic District on Court Street. The surrounding area is a small town and isprimarily residential. Development is concentrated along US 219, with some residential side streets, then openfarmland and forest beyond.

Description of Buildings or Site (Original and Present)This house is a two-story gable-end log structure with a wood shake roof. The logs are hand-hewn flat-faced and fittedtogether with notched corners. The left (west) bay is weatherboard infill. The eaves are covered in board-and-battensiding. There is a shed-roof front porch with wood shingle roofing. The windows are 6/6 wood sashes.

AlterationsMoved from original location across from Bruce Hardwoods south of Beverly in 1999. Left bay was an addition circa1850 and was totally reconstructed when the building was moved.

Statement of SignificanceOriginal home of the settlement family, the Stalnakers. Building ca. 1800. House used as a hospital during the Civil Warin 1863. The Stalnaker family were among the original settlers in the valley in 1772. This house is believed to havebeen built by Jacob Stalnaker, Jr. in the 1790s. House probably added on to ca. 1850. The additions were full length,one-story, shed roof room in the rear and the timber frame rooms were also enlarged. The additions were notstructurally sound enough to be moved with the remainder of the building. (Gioulis 1999)

This building was moved from its original location in 1999 and is not eligible for listing in the National Register.

Description of Buildings or Site (Original and Present):One-story, flat roof, commercial building. Metal cap. Glazed white brick facade. Main entrance is on the corner and it isa gable pediment flanked by brick pilasters with cornice with end brackets. Entrance is arched. Pilasters at roof tophave large, ball finials. Another gable pediment on side with metal panel insert that reads, "BANK" with cartouchebelow the lettering. Three arched windows with keystones on side. Window openings have double, eight pane, non-original windows in them with with concrete sills. Stone foundation. 2 X 3 bays. 1900/ Neo-classical Revival Style. Bankof Beverly. (Gioulis, 1999)

2013 Update: Since 1999, this building has been incorporated into the Beverly Heritage Center and is linked to theadjacent building via a rear addition and interior corridors. This addition does not alter the primary facades of thebuilding.

Statement of Significance:The Bank of Beverly was organized in 1900 by Dr. Humboldt Yokum as President, S.L. Baker as Vice President and L.R. Fowler as Cashier. Yokum was educated at West Virginia University and Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia,graduated in 1885. Baker served as a member of the State Senate for two terms. Fowler was a Principal at Cairo HighSchool for two year prior to coming to the bank. The bank closed its door during the Banking Holiday of March 1933.The Bank Building is currently used by the Allegheny Regional Family History Society which offers a unique collectionof local history and genealogical books, records & manuscripts focusing on Beverly and the surrounding Alleghenyregion. This property was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on January 11, 1980 as a contributing resource tothe Beverly Historic District.

Statement of Significance:he front of this lot is the site of the Beverly Public Square; locally claimed to be the first public playground in the UnitedStates. Charles Myers bought this lot from James Westfall in 1793. The rear of the lot, site of the existing building, wasthe site of the Valley House Hotel. It was a favored stopping place for travelers along the turnpike. The hotel was torndown after 1900 and the current building built ca. 1915. The Beverly Post Office was once located here as well as theschool gymnasium on the second floor. Rohrbaugh's Store occupied the building also. The County Commissioner'swanted to build a new jail on the front portion of the lot in 1813. Building was Rohrbaugh's Store and was once used asBeverly Post Office. In the 1920's it was temporarily used for school classrooms when part of the old school buildingcollapsed and the second floor was used as the school gymnasium. (Goulis, 1999)

German siding;shingles in gable ends. 1/1 windows with simple surrounds. One-story, hip roof, wraparound porch with Doric columnsand wrought iron railing. Main entrance is a the corner diagonally and is framed by Doric columns. Entrance doors haveflat-headed transoms. Concrete foundation. 3 X 3 bays. Ca. 1910. Queen Anne Style. (Gioulis, 1999)

Description of Buildings or Site (Original and Present):Two-story, front facing "L" building. Asphalt shingle roof. One, large, interior, brick chimney; one, small, interior brickchimney. Clapboard siding with corner boards. Modern, 1/1 windows. Full length, two-story, front porch with squareposts on both floors and lattice balustrade on second floor. Entrance door has divided, flat-headed transom and dividedsidelights. Exterior stairway on end. One-story, shed roof, enclosed, entrance addition in rear. Stone foundation. 6 X 3bays. Ca. 1850. Federal Style. (Gioulis, 1999)

Statement of Significance:The lot was originally part of town lot #4. It was deeded from James Westfall to James Bruff in 1792. The house wasbuilt ca. 1850. Bushrod Crawford and his family lived in the house and operated a store in the west wing of the housewith his brother, Absalom Crawford. In July of 1861, General McClellan made his headquarters here while in Beverlyand moved the telegraph office here from the home of Bushrod's brother, Adam Crawford. Bushrod Crawford ranagainst John Hughes in February of 1861 as Delegate to the State Convention to be held in Richmond Va. Bushrodfavored secession; Hughes did not. Hughes was elected but changed his mind to favor secession. Bushrod and hisbrother, Absalom, and their families went south, as many others did, as the War intensified. (Gioulis, 1999)

The building is part of the Beverly Heritage Center. It was listed as a contributing resource to the Beverly HistoricDistrict in 1980.

AdditionsA rear addition for the Beverly Heritage Center was built to link this building and three adjacent buildings together as amuseum. The addition is not apparent from the main facades of any of the structures.

Statement of SignificanceStore building built ca. 1907 for Aries Hill, who operated a general store for about thirty years with living quartersupstairs. After the general store closed it was a pool hall. The entire decorative front is pressed metal. It is now used asa furniture store. (Gioulis, 1999)

The building is part of the Beverly Heritage Center. It was listed as a contributing resource to the Beverly HistoricDistrict in 1980.

Description of Buildings or Site (Original and Present):Two-story, commercial building. Gable, metal roof with front false parapet wall. Parapet has central gable pedimentwith garland entablature. Parapet has four large brackets with smaller brackets between and dentils. Large bracketshave ball finials; the two end finials have a spike. Pressed metal facade simulates stone. Second floor windows havearched glazing and hoods; 1/1 with pressed metal sills. Secondary pressed metal cornice with pressed metal pilasterswith end brackets. First floor has two storefronts; the one on the right looks to be original; the left has been modified.The original storefront has a central, recessed, double door entrance flanked by display windows which are divided intotwo horizontally and undivided transom above. Narrow paneled kickpanels below. Left storefront has modern flushentrance door with transom covered and permastone veneer. 5 bays wide. Ca. 1907. The Hill Building, Historically.(Gioulis, 1999)

Describe Setting

The Beverly Courthouse is located in the central commercial area of the small town of Beverly. It is located on a city lotacross from the Beverly Public Square.

Description of Buildings or Site (Original and Present)The Beverly Courthouse is a 2 story Flemish-bond brick structure with front-gabled roof. The building is three bayswide and abuts the Bank of Beverly on the west and the Hill Building on the east. Windows consist of 6-over-6 woodsashes with Federal-style flat-arch sandstone lintels with keystones. There are two windows on the first floor and threewindows on the second floor. The front entrance is centrally placed and consists of a wooden double door with a flat-arch keystone lintel. The gable features cornice returns and an inscription of the year "1808".AlterationsThe building has been converted into a museum and is connected internally to the adjoining building, which is notevident from the exterior. Wood 6-over-6 windows were restored to the building. The original cupola and wing wereremoved in the 19th century.

Statement of SignificanceBeverly functioned as the original county seat for Randolph County from about 1787 until 1897. The original courthousewas a log structure that was unsatisfactory. A committee was tasked in 1808 with building a new courthouse and jail.This structure was completed in 1815 on the same site as the log structure. The building served as the courthouse until1894. In the late 19th century, the nearby town of Elkins grew significantly due to the railroad, timber and coalindustries and there was a movement to relocate the county seat there. Beverly constructed a new, larger courthousein 1894 in an attempt to head off relocation of the county seat. However, the new courthouse burned "under suspiciouscircumstances" in 1897 and the records were saved and moved to the old 1815 courthouse. Finally, Elkins becamecounty seat in 1899. This building was used as a store, and other commercial structures were built adjacent to it. Thebuilding was acquired by the Historic Beverly Foundation in 2004? and has been restored for use as a museum.The Beverly Courthouse is listed in the National Register as a contributing resource in the Beverly Historic District.
