Tell our readers about your most recent acceptance to BYU.It’s exciting to know that I don’t have to worry about trying to find a college to further my education. That all I have to do is worry about finishing out high school, playing my last high school and club softball seasons, and making memories.

What did you do when you found out that you got accepted on a full-ride softball scholarship? When my coach (Coach Eakin) met with me and my parents, in his office, and told me my scholar-ship amount my sopho-more year, I looked at my parents thinking no way this is real. It didn’t sink in at all because I real-ly wasn’t sure if I heard right. When we left my coaches office, I asked my parents what my schol-arship actually meant and they both looked at me and told me it was pretty much everything and I screamed in the car because I never imagined it being this real.

Are you scared to leave home for college? I am scared to leave home because I am leaving my family behind and it will be hard not being able

to watch my sister and brother play in all their sporting events or even be home with them every day. However, I’m going where I have family all around me; my grandparents, aunts and uncles live just a little over an hour away in Grantsville and I have cousins in Provo, American Fork, and Pleasant Grove areas.

What other activi-ties are you involved in at your school?I’m involved and have lettered in volleyball, soccer, and softball. I’m also a part of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council (SSAC), where we participate in com-munity service for and through the schools in our dis-trict as well as our feeder schools (elementary schools) and our communities. Z

I’ll be studying in the Exercise Science field. I do not know exactly what I want to major in but I’m thinking more of the Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation or maybe even Strength and Conditioning.

What will you be studying at BYU?

I asked my parents what my scholarship actually meant and they both looked at me and told me it was pretty much everything and I

screamed in the car because I never imagined it being this real.

ZONA SHOUT OUT!Congrats to Ashley on her FULL RIDE to BYU!

With all of the changes in tax and investment laws, now more than ever, it

is important to have the most cost-effective method of having the right person handle your assets if you become ill or if you die. Revocable Living Trusts are very useful for assuring access to assets due to illness or death.

With only a Will, court involvement in the form of a conservatorship is necessary for any distribution to a minor that exceeds $10,000 in a year. Conservatorships limit the use and investments of the funds and then release the funds when the minor reaches 18. With a trust, a parent can choose who will oversee the funds, how to invest, use and distribute the funds – delaying distribution to 21, 25, 30 or more. A Revocable Living Trust agreement is the preferred way to handle assets held in 401k’s, IRA’s, life insurance, real estate and other investments.

The trust agreement can have provisions which encourage a college education, promote living a drug-free life, and encourage gainful employment. The parent who knows what is best for the child can choose the right person to oversee the child’s finances and guide the distributions instead of leaving it to the courts.

Many married couples who have a trust now, have outdated provisions which do not incorporate the Arizona Trust Code which can limit court involvement if there is a dispute; or require that upon the death of one spouse the trust automatically split into two trusts. While having an automatic split can limit estate taxes, in some cases, if the married couple’s assets do not exceed the amount that can be passed estate tax free, then the automatic split is not needed. Having two trusts can be more bothersome than helpful, especially when the surviving spouse may survive the deceased spouse by decades. A trust amendment to make the split optional instead of automatic should be considered.

The creator of the trust is referred to as the “Settlor” and is normally also the “Trustee” or owner of the trust assets. The creator is the initial beneficiary of a revocable living trust. If the creator becomes incapacitated or dies, then the Successor Trustee takes control of the trust assets for the benefit of the initial beneficiary or the designated contingent beneficiaries.

When using a trust, the title or ownership should reflect that the Trustees own the property; for example: “John and Jane Doe, as Co-Trustees, of the Doe Revocable Trust dated [insert date of signature].” The date that the trust agreement is signed becomes part of the name of the Trust, even if the trust agreement is later amended.

Science, technology, education and mathematics are all around us. Think about it – from the social media app

on a smartphone and videogame consoles to state-of-the-art cars and life-saving technology – society is dependent on the latest and greatest developments to improve our lives.

Understanding the relevance and tapping the potential of STEM education is vital to the growth and sustainability of our community, our state and even our nation.

In fact, technology has never offered so many lucrative career opportunities. A report by the U.S. Department of Labor pointed to the 10 fastest-growing occupations. At the top of the list: biomedical engineers, network systems and data communications analysts, and biochemists and biophysicists.

And not only are STEM occupations growing at a rate of 17 percent compared to others at only 9.8 percent, but according to the U.S. Dept. of Commerce, these careers also come with hefty salaries. For instance, the average salary in scientific research and development services was $81,350, according to recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

With this in mind, preparing for a career in science, technology, engineering and math has never been more important. It’s why Grand Canyon University is launching the Center for Integrated Science, Engineering & Technology (CISET). Offering classes in 2014, the center will drive the expansion of the university’s computer science, applied math and science curriculum, and lay the foundation for a new college to raise the skills of future leaders in these critical areas of study.

It all starts with learning more about STEM career possibilities. Teachers and guidance counselors are terrific resources. Vocational classes in math and technology also provide a taste of life in a STEM career. Colleges are a good source for information as well, particularly for those who aren’t quite sure whether STEM is for them.

At GCU, we have a Career Compass that can help match students with careers best suited for their individual interests and strengths.

We live in a global, innovation-driven economy. Opportunities to learn – and earn – in this environment have never been more abundant. It’s just a matter of ensuring future scientists and engineers are armed with the breadth of skills necessary to thrive.

A bike. Something that seems so obviously simple; so simple, in fact, that we might take advantage of this unique inventions

beauty. There are some who have tried to spread the enchantment of the bike, perhaps they’ve leaned it against a faded brick wall or posted it on a hipsters Pinterest page. But is this really living up to the artistic opportunities the bike could offer? The answer is no, at least not until now. SMoCA , or Scottsdale Museum of Con-temporary Art, has taken it upon themselves to

feature an exhibit that highlights those incredibly overlooked bikes, present-ing them in different forms and styles. These creations are done by teens, nonetheless, from around the valley. A swipe of paintbrush or a creamed glob of clay may be an original way to express artistic voice, but there is some-thing about the bike that we can all relate to. The bike is always moving forward, always perus-ing the next horizon; it is always on a different

adventure. This exhibit will make you feel like you are also awaiting your next great journey.

Rana Roudi (another Zona reporter) and I got the chance to interview Laura Hales about the exciting

exhibit. This is what she had to say: “Teens have a fresh perspective about the world around us, and their artwork enables them to voice their opinions and to express their creativi-ty.” This “Art in Motion” exhibit, run-ning from January 24 to April 20, will showcase the talents of several teens from a local high school in the valley,

South Mountain. Inspired by the growing art bike movement in America, these student artists used not only their artistic talents, but also geometry, physics, bike me-chanics and weld-ing to create these unique sculptures. Together, these teens have built an

impactful and dynamic exhibit that will leave viewers feeling inspired, “open to learning new things” in order to “achieve success.” Z

Sarah Brooks knows the value of giving back to her community. As an active member of the Tolleson Branch of the Boys & girls Clubs of metro Phoenix since she was 11, Sarah has participated in a countless number of volunteer activities.

Q: What are some of projects you’ve worked on recently? a: Last year, Keystone did a Books-for-Tots program. Families and libraries donated books to Keystone so we could set up a table where little kids could come pick out a book of their own for free. Keystone also recently organized a canned food drive for the Tolleson Food Bank. We set up a donation spot at the front of our Club and collected big boxes full of food for the Food Bank.

Q: Who inspires you to give back? a: Definitely my dad and my sisters. My dad works for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, so he has always taught us about how important it is to do what you can for others. He and my sisters have always been a big inspiration.

Sarah Brooks Junior at Tolleson Union High School

matthew Scheller Jr.7th grader at St. Thomas Aquinas

Q. tell us about your recent pen essay contest win?a. My English teacher, Mrs. Webb, asked all the middle school classes to write an essay for the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars (VFW) Essay Contest. This year’s theme was “What does patriotism mean to me?” It was a requirement for my class.

Q. how did you feel when you heard that you on first place?a. My Principal, Mr. Reardon, and teacher, Mrs. Webb, announced that my essay placed at the post and district level, but I did not know what I won. I found out when I went to the VFW banquets.

Q. What is the one thing that you love about attending Sta?a. I have attended St. Thomas Aquinas since pre-school. I love attending STA because my teachers work hard at getting me ready for high school and I like being able to learn about my faith.

matthew has been awarded second place at post level, first place at district level, and third place at state level! with earnings of $450.00… Great JoB, mattheW!

Q. What does it mean to be a scholar ambassador?

a. Last year the teachers choose one scholar from each class and then we went to the principal and

he asked us a bunch of questions. Then he picked an ambassador for each grade. I was picked for 3rd grade. Every morning I say the Core Values on the loud speaker. An example of a core value is: “Growth isn’t always measured by test scores.” At Kudos (monthly award/recognition ceremony for the whole school) I read the nominations for IB Scholar profiles and sometimes do the announcements. It also means my teacher trusts me.

Q. if you were to have one wish to use on anything, what would you wish for?a. A million dollars to help poor people.

Q. What do you want to be when you grow up?a. Either a Christian singer or a dancer.

Q. What is your best subject in school? Why do you like this one the best?a. My favorite subject is either math or science. I like math because you learn a lot and its just fun.

Q. What is the biggest thing you ever built? a. I am still working on getting new Legos. For

Christmas I got two boxes of Lego Ninjago (about 600-700 pieces in each one) and have built them along with my brothers’ Legos.

Q. how long have you been putting legos together? a. My mom said I have been playing with Legos before I could walk, and I have loved building and playing with Legos since I can remember.

Q. What is your favorite video game? a. I like to play Minecraft and Roadblocks.

Q. how do you think video games and legos are educational for you? a. Minecraft is educational because you have to learn to survive in the game. Roadblocks is a game of strategy that makes you have to think and plan your every move. Legos are educational, as you have to think about area and perimeter and also colors and shapes.

Q. What is your favorite thing about discover U? a. I like the technology and the math lessons. I love using the computers.

kindergartner at St. John vianney

Q. What is your favorite thing about attending St. John vianney? a. I like my teacher, Ms Rodriguez, because she reads to us and she has curly hair like me.

Q. What are your favorite subjects in school? a. I like math because we are counting penguins. I like science lab because we have experiments in class.

Q. how long have you been playing the piano? a. I have been playing the piano since last summer. I take lessons every week with my best friend Lila.

Q. how many songs do you know how to play on the piano? a. I can play about six songs. My favorite song is “Ode to Joy”.

Q. how many brothers and sisters do you have? What are their names?a. One older sister, Hannah. She has curly hair like me. Paul is my older brother. We like to wrestle.

Q. if you could be any superhero who would you be? Why? a. Shh! Thor and Wonder Woman are fighting over me. (In a whisper) But I like Thor better because of the lightning. Q. if you could have one magic power what would it be? a. It would be to fly like Thor so I could go to France to see the Eiffel Tower.

Q. What college were you just accepted to?a. University of Notre Dame

Q. What did you have to do to prepare to get an academic scholarship?a. It was a very long process dating back to my late junior year. A non-profit organization that connects low-income students with high-level universities called Questbridge, opens a strict application for prospective students in early August. The organization will choose a selective pool of applicants who they believe to find ready to apply to prestigious universities across the nation. In order to be a strong applicant, I had to take the most rigorous classes at my school and stay involved. After completing the Questbridge application and being selected as a finalist, I moved on to applying to Universities directly during the month of October. If any of those universities were to accept me, I would be given a full-ride scholarship for four years. On December 2nd, Questbridge notified me that Notre Dame had accepted my application and had been given a full scholarship by them.

Q. Is there a way to get credit for college courses while I’m still

in high school?

A. This is a great question and the answer is absolutely YES! But, there are some important

things to know beforehand, so you are sure to end up with transferrable credits and not just the fun of taking college courses while in high school.

There are two programs that enable high school students to earn college credit at SCC:

• Dual Enrollment is designed to provide an opportunity for qualified high school students to enroll in college courses at high school locations, and to earn high school

and college credits simultaneously. SCC has established agreements with local high schools to offer selected courses to students who have been identified as candidates for college-level work. Dual Enrollment courses are offered in both academic and occupational areas. In order to participate in the Dual Enrollment program, you hae to go through the admissions process and meet certain criteria. Be sure to check with your high school to see if this option if available to you.

• Concurrent Enrollment is designed for high school students that want to take courses on the college campus. It provides the high school student with an opportunity to take classes at SCC while still in attendance at their high school full-time. The program is open to all high school students, as long as their high school is in agreement. Any 100 or above course taken

at Scottsdale Community College counts toward an associate degree at SCC. To determine if the courses taken at SCC will count towards high school credit, it is important to check with your high school counselor prior to taking the class.

There’s a lot of information on the SCC website about Dual and Concurrent Enrollment. Just go to www.scottsdalecc.edu/dualenrollment to get more information and for links to application materials.

Whether you’re thinking about attending SCC while still in high school and/or attending SCC after high school graduation, I strongly encourage you to come to our Welcome Center on campus and speak to an academic advisor. The more you know and the more you plan ahead, the more likely you are to get on track for earning a degree or certificate.

Have you ever wanted to spend an afternoon

nuzzling an umbrel-la cockatoo? Perhaps desired to watch a hedgehog burrow its way under your leg? Or even just spend a generous amount of time playing with kittens? Since 2008, I have lived this dream. I work at the Arizona Animal Welfare League & SPCA, and I can honestly say there is nothing I would rather do. My career with the AAWL began when little eight-year-old me attended Camp Ruffin’ It, a day camp where I learned about a wide range of ani-mals and the roles they play. After a summer spent in Camp Vet, learning about veterinary medicine with other preteens, I joined the Teen Tracks program, an opportunity for eager, animal-loving teens to volunteer in the AAWL’s education department. I joined as a shy, withdrawn child, and over the course of five years, the program has helped me grow into a confident, outspoken leader—though admittedly, one who is not above making smooching noises at a chinchilla.

And this summer I will go one step further: I now officially work for the AAWL, teaching the same camps that I attended a decade ago. Having come full-circle, I am eager to pass on the knowledge I have gained to the

next generation of teens, confident that in doing so, I am shaping my own life as well. Z
