INTRODUCTION
West Sussex is home to a fascinating and diverse Health and
Life Sciences industry. Historically, the county’s strengths
have predominantly been in pharmaceuticals. However, over
the years it has developed its position in Medical Technologies
to that of a strong market leader on a global scale.
Accompanying this is a wide range of companies that offer
support services for the industry, such as specialised
component design, clinical trials support and consultancy.
West Sussex is not only the base for an impressive number of
multinationals who chose to locate their UK or Global HQs in
the county, but also hosts a variety of SMEs, focusing on a
broad range of specialisms, all contributing to the next
generation of ground-breaking innovation and science.
We want West Sussex to be the location of choice. This is an
exciting time for this high growth sector and for the Council.
We encourage you to get to know your local industry and
associated partners to spearhead new opportunities from
which we can flourish.
Yours sincerely,
Louise Goldsmith

AppliSci are an opportunistic developer of biotech products. They work with
pioneering scientists and assist in connecting them with appropriate investors to
help fledgling developments in the medical technologies and pharmaceutical
industries.
They are currently involved in the following projects:
• A simple, topical treatment for fungal nail infections. Now developed enough
to license the product to a dermatology company. They are looking for
partners with line filling capability
• PemphImmune Solutions Limited, a treatment for the rare autoimmune
disease pemphigus vulgaris. The treatment is unique in that it specifically
removes pathogenic antibodies, rather than relying upon a generalised
immuno suppression, which results in many unwanted side effects. They
are looking for development partners and investors
• Nanogenic Solutions has developed a lipid/peptide nano particle for the
targeted delivery of nucleic acids to tissues in vivo. They have been
successful in targeting tumours, achieving significant levels of gene knock
down and gene expression via intra venous injection in vivo. The particle
can be nebulised and they have demonstrated delivery to trachea and
bronchial epitheliae. The system has been used to knock down gene
expression in the brain, and can also target cardiovascular tissues
They are looking for licensees who need a delivery system for their
therapeutic RNA or DNA. As well as investors in this technology, which has
many cutting edge therapeutic applications. Currently, there are a number
of big and small biotech and pharma companies testing the system with
their nucleic acids
• Salikote™- a saliva replacement for the relief of dry mouth symptoms.

The University of Sussex, is internationally recognised for its world-class
research across many subjects. University staff work regularly with a range of
businesses from multinationals to SMEs on ground breaking research and its
practical uses.
The Genome Damage and Stability Centre focuses on the causes of DNA
damage and identifying the faulty repair systems which lead to cancer.
The Sackler Centre for Consciousness Science combines world leading
research in Psychology, Psychiatry, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence,
Neuroscience, and Cognitive Science to assist brain-injured patients through
new clinical interventions.
In 2013, there were 1,765 undergraduates in related degree programmes. 1,235
of these were reading degrees in biological sciences like biology, molecular
biology and biochemistry, and psychology. With a further 85 postgraduates
specialising in the more biological routes, the strength of the research centres
as well as their potential will continue to grow.
The Sussex Innovation Centre is also linked to the university where there are
entrepreneurs, start-ups and innovative growing companies who are offered
strategic advice, a business support team and, for those who need it, flexible,
professional office space. The goal is to help business grow quickly and
sustainably during the vital early years of operation.

The University of Surrey, 14.2 miles from the county border has recently made
major investment in this sector with £10 million invested in new engineering for
health labs. This is to help drive forward Surrey’s ‘Engineering for Health’
campaign, which looks to address the challenges on the expanding ageing
population, as well as the demand for 24/7 care and its impact on the health
service. The funding will help train up highly-skilled graduates, who will be able
to develop technologies such as remote monitoring of patients and apply the
analysis of ‘big data’ to personalised care.
Its health and medical science faculty has 2,000 full time and 2,000 part time
students and has established a new £45 million vet school, one of only eight in
the UK. In the latest UK research excellence framework (REF 2014) they were
rated one of the top eight UK institutions for biosciences, health and veterinary
research. Their research has led to improved understanding and treatment of
diabetes, cancer, addiction, cardiovascular and infectious diseases.
Focusing on the medical trials and care provision side of the life sciences is The
Surrey Clinical Research Centre. Attached to the Royal Surrey County Hospital,
it is both a Clinical Research Facility and Clinical Trials Unit that together cover
all aspects of trial design, set-up, trial conduct, data management, data analysis
and reporting from single-site to global multi-centre trials. While currently
specialising in sleep, psychopharmacology, oncology, immunology and vaccine
development, an even broader therapeutic portfolio is constantly being
developed.

Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust (BSUH) and the Brighton
and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) can support research across a range of
studies within a diverse range of clinical specialities.
The National Institute for Health Research, Clinical Research Facility (CRF)
supports the delivery of early-phase clinical trials. It’s located with a teaching
hospital, so access to patients is seamless. The unit also has a database of
research volunteers. The portfolio of studies incorporates research projects
sponsored by academic partners and the pharmaceutical and medical device
industry. The CRF has an infusion suite for the administration of novel therapies.
The facility allows for the close monitoring of research participants. It has
several clinic rooms and can support studies that require overnight visits. The
CRF is staffed by a team of research Drs, nurses and administrators and
supported by lab technicians and clinical trial pharmacists.
The Brighton and Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (BSCTU) has been established
to support the design, conduct, analysis and publication of clinical trials and
other well-designed studies. There are many advantages to working with a
Clinical Trials Unit and in some cases involvement of a CTU is a requirement for
gaining funding. Studies with CTU involvement are more likely to deliver on time
and budget. This may be because study activities such as trial and data
management can be delegated to experienced staff who can work
collaboratively with the study team so the CI can concentrate their time on the
clinical details of the study.
