Welcome,
The network continues to develop and this
newsletter we would like to welcome Rebecca
Eacott our new Network Development Coordina-
tor. She will truly being doing the job of 2 people
replacing Ally and Juliet.
We are looking forward to our forum on the 23rd
September with themes around winter pressure
planning and anaesthetic challenges and have
some great speakers from around the region with
the hope that all attendees will get involved.
Over the coming weeks we will be hearing more
from the national Review for Paediatric Critical
Care and Specialised Surgery in Children, and the
future aims for ODN’s. We hope to have more
information later in the year.
Thank you all again for your continued support
and see you in September.

Network Update
During 2018/19 we continued to work as a Network to collect vital information
about how and where critical care activity is taking place across the
West Midlands region; and with your help we improved the membership of the
Network and continued to report on our region-wide governance system,
PaediCRID.
As you are aware our Paediatric Critical Care CQUIN finished in March 2019, but
moving into Quarter One, it has been agreed by NHS England that submission
of PCCMDS activity and HDU transport data now forms part of the trusts
contracts. All data is therefore still expected to be submitted to the network on
a monthly basis by the 15th of the following month in order for the Network to
continue reviewing the regions critical care activity.
Towards the end of 2018/19, WMPCCN unfortunately said goodbye to its
Network Coordinator Juliet Brown and Network Manager Ally Davies. As the
new Clinical Network Development Coordinator I am looking forward to
continuing and developing the excellent
work already delivered by Juliet and Ally.

Network Meetings
On 27th March 2019 the Network held its first CPD forum for the year.
Based on feedback from delegates, this was an excellent forum. Attendees at
the forum particularly enjoyed the afternoon workshops which highlighted
lots of learning points. You can view the presentations from the March 2019
forum by going to our website: http://wmchn.nhs.uk/paediatric-critical-care
-network/network-meetings/
The next Network CPD forum will be held on Monday 23rd September 2019
at Walsall Football Club. Registration for this event is now open and is to be
made via the following link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/west-midlands-
paediatric-critical-care-network-regional-forum-registration-61987115130
Please note there is a £30 charge for non-network representatives.
The Network is keen to showcase the knowledge and skills from a variety of
trusts and would therefore like to hear from anyone who is able present at
our next forum. If you are interested please email [email protected].

Welcome to the latest update from the KIDSNTS transport service.
I hope everyone is enjoying what feels to be a calmer period post winter.
As always the service has worked hard to ensure the flow of patients throughout the region has been efficient and safe. Having received a total of 260 referrals in Quarter One we continue to give both expert advice and to utilise our regional beds be they HDU or PICU transfers.
In terms of our workforce, the KIDSNTS Emergency Call Handlers are now up to full establishment which eases the internal pressures on the team.
The cross working within the nursing team continues to go from strength to strength as we work towards a fully merged nursing service - which gives us greater flexibility.
In August we will be welcoming our new 50/50 KIDS/BCH PICU Consultant Dr Fajish Habib and will also sadly be saying goodbye to one of our KIDS Consultant Dr Balazs Fule.
We have held 2 clinical update days within the first quarter to ensure that all members of the multi-disciplinary team are prepared for unforeseen ‘never events’. The day en-tailed face to face teaching and ambulance based hi-fidelity simulation scenarios. The feedback from the day was extremely positive.
I am looking forward to an exciting time as we work in partnership with the WMPCCN and NHS England to work towards the changes that our region needs.

Paediatric Critical Care Issues Database
(PaediCRID)
At the last education forum we discussed the issues reported around
Neurosurgical emergencies and disseminated the learning from some
excellent RCA and local investigations. We highlighted potential issues with
outsourcing of radiology reporting out of hours, especially with regard to
Cranial CT scans. There are a number of trusts within the region where this
may be relevant and this created a lot of discussion and awareness.
Since the inception of PaediCRID we have had a number of reports around
Anaesthetic relationships and confidence within the region. Over the last 18
months the number of issues reported has decreased and the region seems to
have seen some big improvements within this area. However, there are still
trusts where this is an issue. The data from PaediCRID has helped to highlight
this and to forge solutions and resources to support Critical Care within the
region. The Paediatric Anaesthetic Network is actively implementing
processes to support and maintain Paediatric competencies and WMPCCN are
working alongside them to ensure that our region is prepared for the
upcoming winter!
We had just received our first issue report submitted by an Anaesthetist and
since then I am pleased to say that we have received more, which reflects
multi-disciplinary engagement in network development. We are still awaiting
the external review of this issue and I hope to report back on this in
September. There are other reports around this theme, which on initial
inspection I suspect will result in lots of discussion and learning. These reports
will be useful in our plans to improve Critical care pathways and relations.

Paediatric Critical Care Issues Database—continued
We have some further cases, which are subject to SIRI investigation within the
region. These investigations obviously take time to complete and it would be
hopeful to expect these back by September, but these will eventually provide
reflection and learning to be shared.
We have unfortunately not received any excellence reports since our last
education day. I am confident that this is not because we are not seeing any
evidence of good practice! Please remember that we can learn as much, if not
more about things that have gone well and it is also important to highlight
areas that have been improved or that we are excelling.
So, please continue to report and keep us posted on all the excellent work that
is going on in the region or other areas that we can improve! The information
that we are gaining from PaediCRID is guiding development of the
West Midlands Paediatric Critical Care Network.

RAPT- Regional Acute Paediatrics Training

of the team using high fidelity simulation. We also use video debriefing which enables the team to look back on the scenario during the debriefing process. We have been running this course for over 3 years now and feed-back has shown that 100% of staff feel their confidence has improved in
managing paediatric emergencies.
