Preface

Falk Symposium Singapore 2019 represents the zeitgeist where West meets East and Functional meets Organic in Gastrointestinal Diseases .

As our ability to detect and measure changes in morphology and physiology increases, the term functional is expected to dissipate . And yet, doctors continue to bluntly divide their thinking on diseases as either functional or organic . The gastrointestinal tract with its easy access to tissue sampling, and its strong cultural ties to emotions, is an arena where we can challenge this divide .

Even as we bring more sophisticated technology to bear, there may be lessons from the ancient Asian health traditions that treat the mind and body as inexorably combined . Geographically and historically, Singapore is uniquely positioned to bring together the East and the West . Situated at the crossroads of the East, its population is a melting pot of Chinese, Indian and Malay people . This year, Singapore celebrates the bicentennial of its transformation into the most westernized of Asian countries .

We invite the brave to come with an open mind .

On behalf of the scientific committee

Kok Ann Gwee
