Multimedia artist Sam Talbot-Kelly will debut her exhibition Glamourie at Nelson’s Oxygen Art Centre on Friday, after spending a month as the artist in residence.
Having worked with paint, perfor-mance, site-specific installations, print-making and design, her most recent work will include collaborations with other local artists.
“Talbot-Kelly will work closely with several community artists whom she calls her ‘creatives’ in developing personal expressions to illuminate through voice, movement and costume what she calls ‘the sword of truth that lies within’,” reads a press release from Oxygen.
Talbot-Kelly was born in England and now resides in Vermont. She has an MFA in painting from the University of Texas and is currently teaching design at Norwhich University.
According to the release, Talbot-Kelly is interested in “what lies below the surface in the dark chambers of the subconscious. Her work seeks to bring these shadowy energies to the surface in a multitude of
expressive forms.”Her 2013 installation Blood Queen hon-
oured her mother’s passing by employing the vascular system as a metaphor for a larger cosmic presence.
“This stunning installation included the artist’s drawings of the human heart and complex circulatory system silkscreened on to luscious fabric.
The installation was described as a “a mediating layer between emotion and perception and with its rich reds evok-ing the life blood, the queen’s blood, of her mother who in dying joined with a universal life energy.”
Talbot-Kelly’s work draws on the work of early feminist artist, but also departs from their work.
”Glamourie is an example of this de-parture with its quest to uncover the organizing centre or Self beyond gender and perhaps beyond description that lurks beneath the ‘glam’ of characters that form our exterior appearance,” reads the release.
The opening for the exhibition will include a performance on Friday, Jan. 8 from 7 to 9 p.m.
Gallery hours are Wednesday to Saturday 1 to 5 p.m.

Legendary Vancouver bandleader Dal Richards, who died New Year’s Eve at 97, was a semi-regu-lar performer at South Slocan’s Playmor Hall and other West Kootenay dance venues of the 1940s and ‘50s.
“I have a vivid mem-ory of playing a show in Nelson on a Saturday night, and coming to play at the Playmor on Sunday,” he said in a 2004 interview. “Because there was no dancing allowed
on a Sunday in those days we started our show very late, to avoid breaking the law, and everyone had a great time dancing till the wee hours.”
Richards figured he appeared at Playmor at least three or four times. He recalled proprietors Alex and Laura Powell as “great people. They were appreciative of bands, be-cause they’d been in the business as professional dancers for a lot of years.”
The couple advertised their shows, ensured per-formers had good audio equipment, and generally
made the musicians feel welcome, Richards said.
In those days, Richards already had a high profile thanks to his Saturday night CBC radio broadcasts from the Panorama roof of the Hotel Vancouver. He reg-ularly took his ten-piece band on the road to the interior.
“We’d take a week off or more and start in places like Kamloops. In Trail, it seems to me we played in the Colombo Lodge. Nelson seemed to be the Civic auditorium. And then the Playmor.”
The latter, he re-called, “had the best and most enthusiastic dance crowds. That’s what the place was for. They must have held other functions there, but I never thought of it as other than a ball-room. For that reason, the people came to dance. It was an excellent floor, as I recall. And the stage was good.”
Lots of other then-fa-mous and semi-famous names passed through Playmor between 1941 and the mid-1960s, in-cluding Tex Beneke, Gene
Pitney, Bobby Curtola, and Buddy Knox.
The building was later a furniture warehouse, a bingo hall, and since 2007 has been Covenant Church at the Junction.
Richards went on to become a fixture at the Pacific National Exhibition and per-formed a New Year’s Eve show of some kind every year from 1935 to 2014. His last gig in West Kootenay appears to have been a September 1987 show in Nelson.

Selkirk College students set for food drive at Saints hockey game
Students in Selkirk College’s School of Health & Human Services are starting the new year by giving back to peers who struggle to make ends meet while gaining an education.
Partnering with the student athletes on the Selkirk College Saints, the second annual food drive will take place on Friday, January 8 during an exhibi-tion game against Williston State at the Castlegar Recreation Complex. Students in the Community & Classroom Worker Program, Early Childhood Care & Education Program, Social Service Worker Program, and Human Services Diploma Program will volunteer at the game where they will be collecting food items that will be donated to the Selkirk College Food Bank.
“One of the grounding principles of all of our Human Services programs is a focus on solutions,” says Jane Green, an instructor in the Classroom & Community Support Worker Program. “The food drive provides an outlet for generosity and is a so-lution aimed at tackling poverty, one of the social determinants of health. Simply put, people do better if they are not hungry.”
Selkirk College students will be starting the Winter Semester portion of their studies in the first week of January. It is after the opening weeks of a semester that some students run into trouble and are distracted
from their studies by financial pressures. The food bank operates throughout the year, but during this critical time it’s essential to keep the shelves fully stocked.
“We see increased usage of the food bank service during mid-semester when student’s budgets are challenged or diminished,” says Robin Legere, Selkirk College Students’ Union representative.
For the January 8 food drive, students are ask-ing hockey fans to bring items that require minimal preparation and fit a college student’s busy pace. Breakfast cereals, quick and convenient meals, snack foods, and grab-and-go items that provide an energy boost are all on the list of valued items.
The Selkirk College Food Bank provides confiden-tial access for students. It is available on all campuses/extension centres and can be accessed by contacting the students’ union or campus manager.
After a successful first half of the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL) season, the Saints return to the ice after winter break includes two exhibition games against Williston State (North Dakota) on January 8 and January 9. In the second half of the season, the Saints will be resuming their pursuit of a fourth straight league title. The puck drops on both nights at 7 p.m.
Students in Selkirk College’s School of Health & Human Services will be holding a food drive at the Saints game on Jan. 8 at the Castlegar Recreation Complex. Hockey fans are asked to bring at least one item to donate to the service that helps ensure all students have the energy to pursue their studies. Involved in food drive are Robin Legere (Selkirk College Students’ Union representative), Courtney Rogers (CCSW student) and Jane Green (instructor in the CCSW Program).
Olivia, Ethan top BC’s baby namesOlivia is the most
popular name for baby girls born in B.C. for the third straight year.
The province is-sued its annual list of top baby names chosen in 2014.
Ethan was the top name for boys, edg-ing out Liam, the previous year’s top choice.
It’s been a long run of popularity for Ethan, which has been number one or two every year since 2002.
Emma, Sophia, Emily and Chloe rounded out the top five names for girls in 2014, while the other top boys’ names were
Liam, Lucas, Oliver and Mason.
“Not surprisingly Terry was not the most popular boys’ name in British Columbia in 2014,” said Health Minister Terry Lake said.
Final statistics for 2015’s names won’t be available until later in 2016, but so far Olivia appears to be extending her streak, while Oliver was edging ahead of Liam and Ethan for top choice on the boys’ side as of Dec. 1.
The Vital Statistics Agency reported 44,500 babies born in BC in 2014 — 22,957 boys and 21,543 girls.

Kootenay hot springs featured in
British Columbia Magazine
Once again there’s no shortage of West Kootenay content in the latest issue of British Columbia Magazine.
The cover story on BC’s best hot springs in-cludes Nakusp, Ainsworth, Halfway, and St. Leon (al-though oddly, it omits Halcyon).
Authors Glenn and
David Woodsworth write of Nakusp: “Of the half-dozen commercial hot springs in British Columbia, this is one of our favourites. Nakusp is a small and friendly spot, with good, uncrowded soaking.”
Elsewhere in the same issue, there’s a full-page photo of the Rossland Winter Carnival in a round-
up of winter festivals. (This year’s carnival is Jan. 29 to 31.)
There are also brief shout-outs to the Cody Caves, Whitewater’s bike rentals, the Elephant Mountain Literary Festival, and Nelson’s Otter Books — the latter in a roundup of BC’s top inde-pendent booksellers.

One hundred twenty-seventh in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names
Montrose was named for a place in Scotland, but its origin isn’t completely straightforward.
According to Tracks of the Beaver Valley and Pend’Oreille, Leon Selk Simmons (1903-84) moved to Fruitvale in 1942 where he operated a garage, which burned down four years later. He also worked for Cominco, and while commuting to Trail, “the idea of developing a subdivision on the 220 acres of stumps and second growth known as Wood’s Flats began to form.” (It’s unclear who Wood’s Flats was named after.)
Apparently Beaver Heights was first suggested as the name for the subdivision, “but the government would not approve this name because too many place names were using the word ‘Beaver.’”
Simmons hired a Trail lawyer, Arthur Garfield Cameron (1882-1965), to deal with the insurance adjustment on the garage fire, whose wife Adelaide suggested the name Montrose, after her husband’s Scottish roots. (There’s some indication her original pick was Rosemont, but that name already belonged to a Nelson neighborhood.) Cameron and Simmons then formed Montrose Homesites Ltd.
The earliest known use of the name is in the September 1949 issue of Cominco Magazine: “Along the new highway to Fruitvale and near the cut-off, many new homes are springing up. This new district is called Montrose.”
Rita Sims explains in Tracks of the Beaver Valley and Pend’Oreille that the name made sense for an-other reason: “It was covered with brush, some trees, burnt out stumps, and wild roses grew everywhere. At the time I thought that was why the developers were going to name it Montrose.”
Montrose, Angus, Scotland is a coastal resort town 61 km north of Dundee and today has a population of about 12,000. Its BC namesake became a popular
bedroom community of Trail and has a population of a little over 1,000.
The Kootenay Free Press of Feb. 12, 1953 wrote: “The booming Montrose community, where a rural delivery postal route failed last year, is now launching a quest for a local post office. The 200 home community is served by Beaver Falls post office about one mile away. Official community request has again gone to the postal inspector’s department under the seal of the progressive Montrose Improvement Association.”
The Beaver Falls post office moved to Montrose on Oct. 30, 1953. The village incorporated in 1956.
MYNCASTER
This stop on the Vancouver, Victoria, and Eastern Railway near the US border southeast of Bridesville was named for Thomas (1862-1892) and William McMynn (1864-1929), who came to BC around 1887 and ran the Harpur ranch. Thomas drowned in Osoyoos Lake at a young age while William went on to become superintendent of the BC Provincial Police.
The earliest known mention of the name is in the Hedley Gazette of Aug. 30, 1906: “Myncaster is on the west side of Myers Creek valley, and its distance from Midway cannot be much more than 17 miles.”
Myncaster’s post office operated from 1907 to 1931. The name is preserved in Myncaster Rd.

WEEKLY
ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20Aries, practicality is a big part of your per-sonality, but sometimes thinking through the reasons to do something over and over can be tedious. Let loose a little bit this week.
TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21Taurus, expect to feel pulled in two directions this week. It’s a pivotal time at work, but in the same measure, you have much going on at home. Think things over carefully.
GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21Gemini, you may nd your energy levels unusually low this week, and your pro-ductivity may suffer as a result. Maybe someone else can energize you a bit and lend a helping hand.
CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22Cancer, you will get to your destination soon enough, but the trip may be a bit of a headache. Patience is essential this week; otherwise, you may give up prematurely.
LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23Misinformation is spreading, so research everything to make informed decisions this week, Leo. It may help you avoid an expensive mistake down the line.
VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22Virgo, you may have a wonderful time with family or friends this week, even if you are crunched for time. Savor the small moments as they come your way.
LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23Libra, this is a good week to catch up on paperwork, ling or tedious tasks you have let fall by the wayside. Make use of the slow week to recharge.
SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22Scorpio, you will be missed as much as you miss another person this week. Wait out this separation a little while longer, keeping in mind that your reunion is on its way.

Over $1 million for environmental educationColumbia Basin children and communities
will continue to receive opportunities to learn about, appreciate and care for the natural world around them, through Columbia Basin Trust’s $1-million commitment to two environmental education initiatives. These are the Know Your Watershed program and the Columbia Basin Environmental Education Network.
These initiatives have proven successful, and we’re pleased we can commit additional funding to help them become more sustain-able, plan into the future and grow, said Tim Hicks, Columbia Basin Trust Manager, Water and Environment. Through these initiatives basin students will continue to have hands on opportunities to increase their understand-ing of the natural environment, which Basin
residents have told us is a priority. The Know Your Watershed program will be
receiving $540,500 over three years. Working with environmental educators in the Basin, the Trust developed this program in 2010 to help Grade 8 students understand where their water comes from, how it is used and where it goes after it is used. The program is deliv-ered to schools by local educators around the Basin working with Wildsight. Learn more at wildsight.ca/program/know-your-watershed.
“Wildsight is thrilled to continue work-ing with the Trust to deliver Know Your Watershed,” said Monica Nissen, Manager for Wildsightís education programs. “We hear from teachers and students across the Columbia Basin how much they love the
action-oriented, hands-on learning of the program. Because it incorporates knowledge from local community experts, not only does it make a big impact on students, but it also strengthens the community as a whole.”
The Columbia Basin Environmental Education Network (CBEEN) will be receiv-ing $500,000 over three years. Created in partnership with the Trust in 2002, CBEEN supports environmental education in the Basin by offering professional development for educators and providing them access to training, resources, opportunities and tools. It also delivers the Wild Voices for Kids program, which has local experts deliver curriculum-linked programs to schools across the Basin. Learn more at cbeen.org.
CBEEN is excited to continue to play a key role in encouraging environmental stew-ardship and sustainability in the Canadian Columbia Basin by supporting environmental education, said Duncan Whittick, CBEEN Executive Director. There are so many edu-cators from across our region who provide excellent learning opportunities for both classrooms and communities, and we look forward to continuing to work hard to sup-port their efforts.
The Trust highlights environmental educa-tion and stewardship as one of the five goals in its Environment Strategic Plan 2014-2019. To learn more about the education and awareness projects and programs it supports, visit cbt.org/enviroeducation.

Thanks to the kindness of a local business owner and two RCMP officers, two Trail youngsters got a taste of Christmas spirit amid chaos.
Cst. Elwood and Cst. Flewelling took the children into foster care on Christmas Eve after checking on their well being.
Realizing the children would have no presents, the two officers tried various stores and checked
their own homes to find suitable gifts, but came up empty handed.
That’s when the Greater Trail RCMP members contacted Craig Lattanville, owner of Trail Canadian Tire Store, to ask if he could help.
Lattanville opened his doors well after closing hours on Christmas Eve for the officers to do some last minute shopping for the children.
The officers then delivered arm-fuls of presents to the foster mother for the gifts to be wrapped and
under the tree Christmas morning. When the constables returned
to Canadian Tire to pay for the shopping spree, Mr. Lattanville would not take any money and said they were happy to help, explained RCMP Sgt. Darren Oelke.
“The Trail detachment would like to give a big thank you to these two officers and Craig Lattanville,” said Oelke. “Who went above and beyond to ensure that Santa came for two small children.”

Two officers and store owner save Christmas for children

Selkirk College is celebrat-ing its 50th anniversary in 2016, and its looking for help from the community to put together a commemorative book.
Takaia Larsen and Bob Hall are working on a history book to celebrate 50 years at Selkirk,
and they are looking for sto-ries, photos and mementos that help tell the story of the college.
Larsen and Hall have been working on the Selkirk 50th anniversary book since July, and so far they have inter-viewed 15 to 20 people — for-mer faculty and students, and community members who have been involved with the college over the years.
“Interviews with them and their personal stories are a big part of the book,” says Larsen.
The book builds on a small-er publication that Selkirk College put out when it cel-ebrated its 25th anniversary.
“So we’re kind of building on that project that happened 25 years ago and creating more of a full-length book that tells the history of all of the cam-puses and the communities
surrounding the campuses over the last 50 years,” explains Larsen.
Plans are to launch the book during the homecoming week-end at Selkirk in September.
Larsen and Hall will be col-lecting material for the book until the end of February and anyone who would like to con-tribute can contact Larsen at 250-365-1358 or [email protected].

5 tips for parents with teens in the new yearCanada’s most common New
Year’s Resolution this year — for teens and for adults — was to lose weight. While setting health-related goals can be posi-tive, framing them negatively and setting unrealistic goals can set us up for failure. New Years is a time for self-reflection and renewal, but too often for teens in Canada this can turn into a spiral of negative thoughts and emotions, often related to their bodies. Some teens may have made resolutions that they may not be able to keep, and oth-ers may not have the necessary tools or resources to start boost-
ing their own self-esteem.Good body image and self-
esteem starts at home, and at Kids Help Phone we know that by helping their children rec-ognize their inner qualities and focusing on their accomplish-ments, parents help to teach kids that what is really impor-tant about them has nothing to do with their size, shape or weight. Parents can create an environment that promotes self-acceptance and positive self-es-teem and help young people feel comfortable in their own skin, positively affecting their confi-dence, thoughts and behaviours.
