I have been a Consultant Radiologist in Winchester for 13 years. My sub specialist interest is GI, particularly cross sectional imaging. We are lucky to be a reference site for our 2 state of the art CT scanners, and I lecture on behalf of the manufacturers on the latest CT technology.

Abstract

Advances in CT technology - the Winchester experience There have been rapid advances in CT technology over the past few years and we are now able to image faster, with more clarity and at a lower dose than ever before. In Winchester we are lucky enough to have two state of the art CT Scanners. My talk will focus on two of the aspects that make our CT scanners so good with particular emphasis on ultra low dose techniques and on multi energy scanning.

Abstract Dr Paul O’Donnell, Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologist Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital

Radiological staging of bone tumours prior to referral Aims: To understand the rationale for staging bone tumours and gain familiarity with the techniques used. Staging is the assessment of local tumour and distant metastases in order to assess prognosis and guide oncological management. Appropriate investigation prior to referral to a treatment centre enables rapid treatment once the diagnosis has been established. Local staging usually consists of radiographs and MRI, and occasionally other investigations. such as CT which can be useful for characterising bone lesions. There is significant overlap between local staging and lesion characterisation. It is usually the radiologist's assessment of the nature of the bone lesion that determines what investigations are needed and who should be referred. Distant staging requires assessment of the lung and skeleton as these are the main sites of metastasis for bone sarcomas, using CT thorax and Tc 99m isotope bone scan. CT PET is more sensitive for bone lesions but gives a higher radiation dose and is not sufficiently accurate to identify small lung metastases. Whole body MRI is useful for malignancies that spread within the marrow cavity such as myeloma and Ewing sarcoma, which are less well evaluated by Tc scintigraphy. Dr McCarthy graduated MBChB in Cape Town and did her radiology training in Oxford. She did an MSK fellowship at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford and has been working there as a Consultant MSK radiologist since 2008.
