CHRIST IN THE PASSOVER

Hopewell United Methodist Church Sunday, March 8th at 11:00 AM Jesus' Last Supper was actually a Jewish Passover. Deb Dubin of Jews for Jesus will re-create the traditional Passover service and explain how it foreshadowed Jesus' death and resurrection in a presentation called "Christ in the Passover" Deb Dubin will set a table with items traditionally used at the Passover meal and detail their spiritual significance. She will also explain the connection between the events of the first Passover in Egypt and the redemption that Jesus accomplished, as well as the deep bond between the ancient Passover feast and the Christian communion celebration today. Jews for Jesus has presented "Christ in the Passover" at over 38,000 churches. It has been enthusiastically received by Christians who appreciate learning more about the Jewish backgrounds of their faith. Moishe Rosen, who founded Jews for Jesus in 1973, has also co-written the book, Christ in the Passover, with his wife, Ceil. This seminal work includes a look at Passover in ancient times and how it is practiced today. It will be available after the presentation. Also available will be a DVD of the Christ in the Passover presentation with David Brickner, the executive director of Jews for Jesus, officiating.

Our Prayers go out to Jim and Linda Branscome and their family on the loss of Gloeda Branscome.

Editor’s Thoughts: At our house, we are Foodies. As a child I remember my Mom making

delicious holidays meals with special table decorations and special desserts. The influence of

my Father’s southern roots often dictated our daily diet; pinto beans, salt ham and hush

puppies. I started cooking around the age of ten to help get the meal on the table earlier for my

working parents. I had to learn the fine art of making pinto beans and sweet rice; both became

staples in my college diet since they were cheap to make. When I first started staying home as

a new mother I found soap operas irritating and began watching cooking shows. This led to my

experimental cooking phase and some disaster dishes even the dog would not eat. Eventually

the children joined me in the kitchen and cooking became an adventure. We were a team

preparing meals for their Dad to enjoy when he came home. We grew tomatoes and made salsa,

bought local apples and canned applesauce. Somewhere during the cancer years the food thing

changed. The constant travel to the hospitals required eating on the run and the idea of eating

fast food began to grate my nerves. So the quest for better choices for the boys and I began.

First it was good pizza. Then late night diner food, chicken soup literally feeds the soul. As the

boys grew so did our dining passion. Soon we had a secret life as Foodies. Because Wayne’s

cancer was in his thyroid and his throat had been damaged by radiation he had swallowing

problems. The radiation had changed his sense of taste; he no longer took pleasure in eating.

His diet consisted of chicken soup and protein shakes. Eventually he got a feeding tube and

wasn’t supposed to eat by mouth anymore, family meals were never the same. Over the course

of fifteen years he spent hundreds of days in the hospitals. We realized we could not share our

joy at discovering a new place to eat or a new dish we came to love. His hospital stays became

our time for the secret enjoyment of food. We found that food can be a simple passion that

feeds the soul. Dining together had become a coping mechanism for the suffering we had to

endure. We developed a joke about how life boiled down to eating, that was all there really was.

Everything else was material and subject to disaster. When we had little money we still had the

joy of sharing a meal, even if it was from the Food Pantry and consisted of macaroni and cheese

and smoked sausage for a whole month. We realized that no matter how bad life got, sharing

meals as a family gave us solace. In his last days Jesus shared a meal with his Disciples, the

simple elements of bread and wine. The act is still practiced at Communion in remembrance.

The importance was the sharing and the acknowledgment of a connection to something greater.

During Wayne’s last days he sneaked some of my homemade apple pie; it caused the pneumonia

that finally killed him. His only comment, he was tired of not tasting food. Now that my family

has grown up and everyone works the chance to share a meal has become more precious than

ever. We remember the leaner times, the late nights coming home from the hospitals. We

know those meals made us strong and able to keep going in the face of hopelessness. We laugh

and talk and acknowledge that even now all there really is to life is eating good food. As we

break bread together we share the greatest gift of all, family connection.

Long Title: Today’s choice of sock color, my decision to call my sister at 8:42pm last night, and guess who I just happen to run into the other day? Short Title: The Providence of God!

“The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.” Proverbs 16:33! If you have learned anything from The Story, I urge you to remember this: Everything happens according to Divine Design. Consider these minor details, which seemed like nothing more than coincidence at the time but they changed the course of human history: • Who directed the Ishmaelites on their journey to Egypt at the very moment, Joseph was cast into the pit? (Genesis 37:25) • Who guided Pharaoh's daughter to the stream, just when that now famous basket came floating by? (Exodus 2:3-5) • What gave Ahasuerus a sleepless night that he might be amused with the records of his kingdom? (Esther 6:1) •Who prepared the whale at the very time and place, when Jonah was cast overboard? (Jonah 1:17) Even today, when kingdoms are tossed up and down like a tennis-ball (Isaiah 22:18); not one event can escape the Providence of God. As Jesus put it: “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” (Matthew 10:29-30) The doctrine of God’s Providence is one of the most important for a Christian to get clarity on early. If the president of the United States calls you to ask about his recurring nightmares (and refuses to tell you the dream), don’t answer the phone till you get this settled in your head and heart. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

NEWS FROM: The Wesleyan Chapel United Methodists Women’s Society (UMWS) – The sub sale was held January 31, 2015. We’re very proud to report that we had profits of $1,518.28 which go for 2015 missions. We sold over 300 subs and approximately 20 quarts soup. We did receive a lot of positive comments and other comments on how to improve the subs. All-in-all we feel it was a good start earning resources for 2015 Missions. Thanks to all who came out and worked making subs and for the ladies who made soup, it was delicious. A BIG THANK YOU to all who purchased the subs and soup!

disappearance of our troubles

them.”

SCRIPTURE CAKE -submitted by Helen Hines It is believed that Scripture Cake recipes appeared in the early 19th century or perhaps earlier. This cake was very much in fashion at women’s sewing bees and home Bible study groups in the 1830’s to 1850s. The recipe was presented as a fun guessing game which tested participant’s knowledge of the Bible and their cooking abilities and prevented the gathering from indulging in tittle-tattle, though it’s doubtful that they were always successful in preventing the later. Be sure to use the King James version of your Bible. ¾ c Genesis 18:8 1 ½ c Jeremiah 6:20 5 Isaiah 10:14 separated 3 c Leviticus 24:5 sifted ¾ tsp 2 Kings 2:20 3 tsp Amos 4:5 1 tsp Exodus 30:23 ¼ tsp 2 Chronicles 9:9 ½ c Judges 4:19 ¾ c Genesis 43:11 chopped ¾ c Jeremiah 24:5 finely chopped ¾ c 2 Samuel 16:1 Genesis 43:11 whole Cream Genesis 18:8 with Jeremiah 6:20. Beat in yolks of Isaiah 10:14, one at a time. Sift together Leviticus 24:5, 2 Kings 2:20, Amos 4:5, Exodus 30:23, and 2 Chronicles 9:9. Blend into creamed mixture alternating with Judges 4:19. Beat whites of Isaiah 10:14 until stiff; fold in. Fold in chopped Genesis 43:11; lightly dust Jeremiah 24:5, and 2 Samuel 16:1 with Leviticus 24:5 and fold in. Turn into 10 inch tube pan that has been greased and dusted. Bake 1 hour, 10 minutes at 325 degrees or until done. Cool 10-15 minutes and remove from pan and cool completely. Drizzle with Burnt Sugar syrup and decorate with whole Genesis 43.

ENJOY YOUR CAKE MATTHEW 6:25,26

Burnt Sugar Syrup 1 ½ c Jeremiah 6:20 ½ c Genesis 24:25 ¼ c Genesis 18:8 Melt Jeremiah 6, over low heat; continue cooking until syrup is amber. Add Genesis 24; cook until smooth. Remove from heat; add Genesis 18 and stir until melted. Drizzle over cake.
