I am a fan of pens, journals, writing paper, basically anything related to school and office supplies. I have had this affinity since childhood. I loved back to school shopping: theme books, decorative pencil bags, specialty pens, Trapper-Keepers, highlighters, stickers, book covers. My father operated an accounting office and I would pour over all the supply cata- logs, making a list of favorites I would ask him to include in the next office order. When September approaches my heart longs for new tools. This year I discovered a local Virginia company that promotes a life filled with fountain pens and all manner of writing instruments. So…. I have added a new pen to my life. Recently they asked for followers’ to post favorite quotes written by a fountain pen. The difficult task of picking one of hundreds of favorite quotes en- sued. Finally I chose one by Maya Angelou : “Hope and fear cannot occupy the same space. Invite one to stay.” There is so much this inspires in my journey of faith. It reminds me of the innumerable ref- erences in Scripture that call upon us to “fear not”. It inspires me to direct my energy to- ward the Gospel that is hope. It also teaches me that I have a choice and the call to act. I do the inviting. I pick which will inhabit my soul. I choose whether my relationships will be filled with wonder or despair. Remembering the horrible circumstances of Maya’s young life, the terrible trials of people of faith throughout the ages, the experiences Jesus faced; I think also of how hope sustained their journeys. No matter what we encounter, we retain the choice to walk in hope or fear. Hope grows into peace, peace springs into joy. This quote is a powerful reminder for me to rely on the presence of God. I am thankful to Maya Angelou for letting the glory of the Holy Spirit shine through her life and writings. I pray that we will all choose to invite hope to stay as we journey in faith together. And as for the new pen… it is a beautiful rainbow delight with a black steel nib which will write this quote and many more words of hope for years to come! I am a fan of pens, journals, writing paper, basically anything related to school and office

supplies. I have had this affinity since childhood. I loved back to school shopping: theme

books, decorative pencil bags, specialty pens, Trapper-Keepers, highlighters, stickers, book

covers. My father operated an accounting office and I would pour over all the supply cata-

logs, making a list of favorites I would ask him to include in the next office order.

When September approaches my heart longs for new tools. This

year I discovered a local Virginia company that promotes a life

filled with fountain pens and all manner of writing instruments.

So…. I have added a new pen to my life. Recently they asked for

followers’ to post favorite quotes written by a fountain pen. The

difficult task of picking one of hundreds of favorite quotes en-

sued. Finally I chose one by Maya Angelou :

“Hope and fear cannot occupy the same space. Invite one to stay.”

The Eqer Group

Wesley UMC has been so wonderfully warm and wel-

coming to the former Aldersgate members and we ap-

preciate you so much. Aldersgate will always be a

part of us but we would like to move forward with

Wesley so we decided to find a name to represent

us….and…..the Eqer group was chosen. Eqer is a

Hebrew word that is pronounced (ay’-ker) and it

means an off shoot, transplant, a member of a so-

journer’s family. So the Eqer group are Members of

the former Aldersgate UMC that have found a home

at Wesley UMC. Thank you!! Grace and peace to

you all, Donna Turley.

After a six-month medical leave, Bishop Sharma D. Lewis’ return

to the Virginia Conference is planned for September 2019.

Lewis started her medical leave at the beginning of March as she

underwent several hip surgeries. In her absence, Bishop Peter D.

Weaver, retired bishop, was named the interim episcopal leader.

Lewis said she is appreciative of all the prayers and gestures of

care and concern she received from around the conference and United Methodist

connection. She has steadily improved in her recovery and the time frame of her

return is contingent on her continued healing and by advisement of her medical

team.

Lewis also wanted to share her appreciation to Bishop Weaver for his calm and

steady leadership in this interim period. She asks that the conference be in prayer

and give thanks for the ways that Bishop Weaver has led and served this confer-

ence.

Connectional Table launches Emerging, an online anthology on our church

The Connectional Table is proud to announce the launch of Emerging, a digital collection of essays, articles

and other content discussing what may be taking shape in the life of our connection as a result of the out-

come of the 2019 Special Session of the General Conference. The purpose of the website,

www.emergingmethodism.com, is to be a venue of conversation including voices from a multiplicity of

viewpoints. The hope is that it will help lead us to forge a compelling consensus toward what to teach, how

we teach, who we are, and how we will continue to live together in ministry. It is not a forum for debate or

for proposals about structure, but a space to invite critical thinking and reflection on what is emerging in

Methodism. The project draws inspiration from Isaiah 43:18-19: “Don’t remember the prior things; don’t

ponder ancient history. Look! I’m doing a new thing; now it sprouts up; don’t you recognize it? I’m making

a way in the desert, paths in the wilderness.”

Content will reflect on at least one of the following topics:

● Leadership: Our Call

● Ecclesiology: Our Church

● Theology: Our Beliefs

● Missiology: Our Mission

● Polity: Our Structure

● History: Our Story

HUNGER ACTION MONTH

September is Hunger Action Month – a

month where people all over America stand

together with Feeding America and the na-

tionwide network of food banks to fight hun-

ger. It’s a month to spread the word and take

action on the hunger crisis, and dedicate our-

selves to a solution.

Challenge and deepen your spiritual life as

you read, reflect, and take action to end hun-

ger in our community and across the country.

During this month explore nonprofits and

agencies in our area that strive to end hunger.

H.E.L.P. Society of St. Andrew. Rise Against

Hunger. These are a few to get you started.

Pick one to connect with

and find a way to support

their efforts through pray-

ers, donations, and serving.

Rise Against Hunger

It is with great pleasure that we

announce the destination of the

Rise Against Hunger meals you

helped package on 6/8/2019. A

shipping container, holding

285,120 meals, has been sent to

Nicaragua for our partner OR-

PHANetwork. If you happen to receive more than one of

these announcements, your meals have gone to impact multi-

ple partners.

ORPHANetwork is an organization that nourishes lives

through food assistance and other services in Nicaragua. To

learn more, please visit our partner/country spotlight on the

Impact Stories tab and click and drag on our World Aid Map

at https://www.riseagainsthunger.org/world-aid/.

Ending hunger is only possible if we continue to grow the

movement. We encourage you to share the news about this

shipment. Since 2005, volunteers like you have helped us

distribute over 455 million meals worldwide. We can end

hunger by 2030, but we can't do it without you.

Please visit our website www.riseagainsthunger.org and con-

tinue your involvement. Consider making a donation, plan-

ning another meal packaging event (at your place of worship,

school, company, civic club, etc), joining our advocacy ef-

forts, or even inviting us to speak to a group.

SEPTEMBER 2019—Stewardship— What If There Is An Answer?

This is the time of year, when church leaders begin discussing next

year’s budget. They look at the giving for this year thus far and the past

few years. Figures are reviewed, budget requests are received, staff

compensation considered, all far too often under a cloud of anxiety.

It is unfortunate that anxiety is a part of the picture, but it is. God did

not design the church to be anxious about money. It has too much pow-

er over us and too often takes the joy out of serving Christ and his

church.

What if there is an answer that lies right in front of us? Well, there is. God has given us the answer from the

very beginning. It is the tithe and it is generosity. With these two biblically based teachings your church can

receive all it needs and more to accomplish it’s mission.

When the nation of Israel was established all of Israel was taught to give of their “first-fruits” to support the

work of the temple. From oil for the lamps, to lambs for the sacrifices, to food for the Levites who were as-

signed temple duties, this was primary. The tithe was seen as a response for God’s graciousness to Israel.

Additional giving was for the festivals and to support the poor.

In the gospels, Jesus says little about the tithe but preaches about the danger of riches and depending on

one’s wealth and not on God.

In the letters of Paul and others, generosity has become, in my opinion, the new standard. Generosity is a

gift of the Holy Spirt (Galatians 5:22-24). I believe the tithe still stands as a benchmark, and as Betsy

Schwartzentrub says in Guidelines for Stewardship, 2012, “The tithe is the floor, not the ceiling.”*

Imagine; if all Christians everywhere joyfully embraced the tithe and generosity as a normal practice of

spiritual discipline. Imagine. What difference would that make for your church? It is a serious question and

deserves pondering. Estimates are that Christians give about 2-3% of their income. Faithful worshipers

maybe 4%. But what if we all gave 10%? Or more? What if this had been our practice for generations? Im-

agine.

So what about next year? Maybe even this Fall, will you be among those who practice the tithe and/or gen-

erosity as one part of your spiritual life? Begin now to prayerfully discern how you can bring this spiritual

discipline into your home and life. God will show you the way.

And practice generosity! Always practice generosity!

Wesley’s Stewardship Focus Sept 22- October 20

Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Coming in late September Wesley's attention will turn

to Matthew 6. Together we will explore the Treasures of God’s grace.

In the counter-cultural teachings of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said that wherever

we focus our hearts; there we’ll find our treasure—not the other way around.

In "Treasure", a church-wide stewardship program and small-group study, author Jacob

Armstrong reexamines how what we think about money directly connects to our values,

faith, and the health of our relationships. When our hearts are centered on God, our

church, and our family, we’ve already struck it rich! Let’s go on treasure hunt together.

United Methodist Men Spiritual Advance Sept. 27-28

Registration is now open for the 2019 UM-

Men’s Spiritual Advance at Baylake UMC in

Virginia Beach on Sept. 27-28. Featured

speaker is the Rev. Dr. Kevin Watson, author

of The Class Meeting and Bible study teacher

at the 2019 Virginia Annual Conference. The

theme is Transforming Grace. Special rates are

available for pastors, early birds, spouses, and,

if you attended last year, Bring One Get One

(BOGO) for first timers. New this year,

church sponsorships are targeted for churches

who have never attended the event or those

currently with no formal UMMen organiza-

tion. Open to all churches, the challenge is to

line up 12 men to come and receive both a dis-

counted rate and a free event themed T-

shirt. A box lunch option is available on Sat-

urday to allow for more fellowship on site

with brothers in Christ. More information at
