Oakbank held its first trials for the season on 28 February and the effects of an extraordinarily wet

winter in the Adelaide Hills were evident for all to see.

“We’ve had the wettest winter for about twenty-five years,” said Chairman Barney Gask, “and much of the course flooded three times. The creek at the back of the grandstand washed away some of the road and was flowing so fast it damaged one of the bridges that go over it. It really is a long time since Oakbank has seen a winter like this.”

Plenty of winter rain is always good news for the Oakbank track and its meetings in April. “There’s an excellent cover of the grass all over the track and at our first trials today it rated a Dead 4 — perfect for jumps racing,” Barney added.

The team at Oakbank has produced an ideally-rated track for the Easter Racing Carnival for the last decade or so, important because of the early season racing, and

2017 will be no different.

“We can say for certain that the Oakbank track will be perfect for jumps racing come April and the Carnival,” said Barney, “and trainers can bring their horses to Oakbank with confidence, knowing that we’ll have a surface that’s ideal for hurdles and steeplechases. We’ve managed to produce a Dead 4 track when there hasn’t been as much rain around, so we’re sure this year it will be especially good.”

The first meeting of the season at Oakbank is on Sunday 2 April, with the traditional Easter Carnival to be held this year on Saturday 15 and Monday 17 April. The Carnival will feature the $100,000 Somerled Classic Hurdle and Von Doussa Steeplechase, and the $160,000 Great Eastern Steeplechase on Easter Monday.

Representatives from AJRA/SAJRA and New Zealand jumps associations will meet on Sunday morning 16th April.

Tickets for this year’s Carnival can now be purchased online at

THE 2017 SIRE CUSTODIANS LEADING JUMPS TRAINER PRIZE

Sire Custodians, the leading supplier of syndicate documentation and management consultancy services to the Australian thoroughbred industry, will be awarding a prize to the leading jumps trainer over the two days of the Easter Racing Carnival at Oakbank.

The prize, which is worth $1,500 in cash, will be awarded on the basis of who trains the most jumps race winners over the Carnival, which includes both the Von Doussa and the Great Eastern Steeplechases.

In the event of a tie, the prize will go to the trainer with the most wins and second places; if the score is still tied, it will go to the trainer with the most first, second and third places. If there is a tie remaining after this process, the prize will be shared.

The 2017 Sire Custodians Leading Jumps Trainer Prize will be awarded after the connections of the Great Eastern Steeplechase winner receive their trophy, and will be presented by Tony and Linda Fleiter of Sire Custodians, proud sponsors of jumps racing at Oakbank.

Brierly Paddock Upgrade, Warrnambool

The much anticipated upgrade to Brierly Paddock is now complete and perfectly prepped for its debut at this year’s May Racing Carnival.

The upgrade included substantial earthworks to level out areas of the track as well as the addition of a sand

and soil mixture to improve drainage. A new turf surface was laid and thanks to the recent rain and care taken by our track staff, the track is looking a treat!

Once boggy and wet during the winter months, the

upgrades to Brierly Paddock will improve the drainage and irrigation and allow the club to host a greater amount of jumps meetings during the months of July and August.

Well done to Racecourse Manager, Daniel Lumsden and his team for the great management of this important project.

MARCH 2017

Last year’s Warrnambool Cup winner Master Of Arts completed a most unusual preparation for

this year’s $400,000 Adelaide Cup by running second in a 2400-metre hurdle trial on Friday 10 March at Warrnambool.

CrownBet has the Darren Weir-trained five-year-old as the $4.40 favourite for the 3200-metre Group 2 feature at Morphettville on Monday and John Allen, his jockey in the hurdle trial, said he couldn’t fault the horse.

“He’s a relaxed sort of dude that was just happy to go around and follow Crime Fighter,” Allen explained. “He’s a really good jumper and he’s in good order and did it pretty easily today.”

Master Of Arts, who won last year’s Warrnambool Cup in May, contested a few hurdle schools at the end of

last season and is expected to take the plunge into jumps racing this season.

Master Of Arts will be joined by stablemate Lord Van Percy in the Adelaide Cup after plans to take the seven-year-old import to Saturday’s Auckland Cup were shelved.

Allen rode a number of Weir runners at the Warrnambool trials, including Now And Zen, who is on track to defend his feature hurdle race title at the Oakbank carnival in South Australia next month.

The Irishman reported that the 2014 Sandown Cup winner Renew was close to making his debut over the obstacles after finishing second in his school while jumps racing also beckons for another school runner-up, the former French horse Hale Soriano.

MARCH 2017

The $350,000 Grand National Steeplechase meet-ing at Ballarat on August 20 will be a six-race

jumps program with no flat races conducted, believed to be the first time in more than a century that this has occurred in Australia.

A total of $3.51million in prizemoney will be offered for the season across 63 jumps races, split between 43 hurdle and 20 steeplechase races.

Racing.com Park Pakenham will stage the first races, with two hurdle contests programmed to commence the season on March 16, being the first time in Australia that jumps races have been programmed on a night meeting.

Sale will also stage jumps races for the first time since 2009, with five jumps races programmed over two meetings.

Warrnambool, home of the world famous May Carnival, has the busiest schedule of the nine venues that stage jumps racing with 14 races programmed.

The season will conclude with the Coleraine meeting on September 24.

Paul Bloodworth, Racing Victoria’s Manager of Racing Operations, believes that the 2017 program will enhance participation across the state.

“We’re excited to showcase the country’s premier hurdle and steeplechase horses with Australia’s first all-jumps race meeting of the modern era at Sportsbet-Ballarat on Sunday, 20 August,” Bloodworth said.

“For jumps racing enthusiasts and participants alike, this all-jumps meeting is sure to be one of the highlights of the calendar in 2017 and will really place our premier hurdle and steeplechase horses in the limelight.

“It’s also exciting to expand the jumps racing footprint at Racing.com Park with three meetings programmed for next year, while Sale return to the fold and will host jumps races for the first time since 2009.”
