Dear Families and Friends,

Congratulations to Jake Perrett who this week was announced as one of the four team captains to

lead the Victorian team to the National Titles. What an honour. Jake’s hard work has paid off and we are

immensely proud of him. Good luck in competition, Jake.

Swimming continues next week for two sessions. The children are getting tired so it is impor tant for

them to drink lots of water, eat well and to get to bed early. Thank you to all the mums and dads who have

helped walk the classes to the pool. Your help is very necessary.

Next week we have our Grandparents Afternoon and Open Day. All families are welcome to this event,

even if grandparents are unable to make it. Activities begin at 4.30 with our open classrooms, the parents v

students soccer match is at 5.30pm then dinner and musical performances from 6.00pm. It is a huge night

so please remember to get your order in. Any help cooking snags or serving salads and sweets would be

appreciated.

Other big events to be aware of next week are our final orientation session for Foundation 2019. The

children are fitting in beautifully. We also have the Rotary dinner in the Mary MacKillop Hall at 6.00pm

on Wednesday.

Please join us from 1.40pm tomorrow as we farewell Wendy McKean. There will be an afternoon tea on in

the hall from 1.40pm. The assembly to celebrate Wendy’s 35 year career will begin at 2.25pm. It should be

lots of fun. We hope to see you there.

Please be aware, State Elections will take place in the Mary MacKillop Hall this Saturday. There will be a

sausage sizzle to raise money for the Basketball Association so bring along some loose change.

Have a great weekend,

Matthew Hamer

Healthy Tips - Where do we find sugar?

In terms of health risks, we need to be concerned about ‘added sugar’. That is, sugar that has been added to food or drink.

What can I do?

The easiest way to lower your added sugar intake is to cut down on sugary drinks. Make a start by calculating how much sugar and energy you consume from sugary drinks – it may surprise you.

Tips to help you cut back from our partners at LiveLighter and Rethink Sugary Drink:

Find out what sugary drinks are doing to your body Find out more about avoiding sugary drinks Discover the sneaky sugar in ‘healthy drinks’

For more information or to use the sugar calculator access: https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au

Natural sugars in foods

Fruit and milk products or High in nutrients – vitamins, minerals, fibre or calcium.

We should eat these foods every day.

Sugar added to food

Processed foods

These foods are unhealthy and high in energy (kJ). They don't have other nutrients we need such as fibre, vitamins and minerals. We should limit these foods.

Absence Reminder : If your child is absent from school, you must

advise the school as soon as possible on the day. Due to new legislation,

the school is required to contact parents/guardians if your child is absent

with an unknown reason. A Skoolbag App absentee form is the most

efficient contact method or you can phone the school office and then

provide a written note.

DROP OFF ZONE is via the Mary MacKillop Hall carpark only. The Disabled Parking

spaces are only for people with permits.

Don’t forget to bring the following in a plastic

bag which they will carry to the pool

Underwear

Towel

Goggles

Bathing cap (if necessary)

Please label all items and bags very clearly with your child’s name.

Parent helpers who hold a current Working With Children registration will be needed to walk the children to and from the pool. We need at least one helper per day.

This week our focus has been on Confidence, in our You Can Do It!

program.

Confident behaviour in students includes:

asking to play with others

trying something new

having a go at answering a question in class even if you are not

certain of the answer

expressing an opinion that might be different to your friends

This week we saw some prime examples of children showing Confidence.

Our 2019 Foundation students had a second visit to school on Tuesday as

part of their orientation program. Our 2018 Foundation students worked

in a different classroom with a different teacher. The Year 5s met their

buddies for next year and spent time getting to know them. It is not always

easy to go to a place you don’t know and mix with people who you are not

familiar with. Well done to everyone!

This term, the kindergarten children who

will be in our Foundation classes next

year are having their Orientation Days.

That means that this year’s foundation

students had to come out of their room

and spend some time with their grade

six buddies. While they were with their

buddies they did some activities

together. The activities were reading a

book together, cutting and pasting,

colouring and making shapes. The new

foundation students will be coming to

school every Tuesday to get to know

their new school, new teachers and new

classmates. It was great to spend some

time with our buddies as the year is

nearly over and we will be leaving our

buddies for secondary school.

Last week the year

6’s started a new

stem item.

We had to design

and create a phone

or tablet stand. We

have three

sessions to

complete this task,

one for planning and two for constructing. The

planning lesson was really important as we

needed to make sure we had a list of materials

we were going to need, but also have the

layout to make the construction lessons easier.

We all had our own methods and own

materials to use to create our very own

stands. Thank you to Mick for creating this

STEM.

Lawn Bowls

By Charlie Graham Lawn bowls is a good game in the summer. Emma, Jordon, Lily, Dom, Alex, Tommy and I have been playing every Tuesday. It only costs $2 each night. The season lasts 6 weeks. At the end of the season we get a sausage sizzle. Each Tuesday we have a little bit of a practise, then we play a real game. It is really good. You get to learn about the game and how to play it.
