Bethany has been situated on the corner of 15 Mile Road and Beaconsfield for more
than 50 years, and has a rich heritage that involves a group of Christ followers who are
devoted to seeking the will of God. We know it is no accident that we have been placed on
this corner and we strive to reach out to our community with the love of Christ.

Sermon Series Just Walk Across the Room
Bill Hybels shows us with convincing and inspiring clarity the
power of this personal, richly relational approach to evangelism. The stakes
are high. The implications are eternal. You may be only a conversation away
from having an eternal impact on someone’s life if you will just walk across the
room.
At the end of September we will be starting small groups for this series. This
will be a four-week church wide campaign. We will learn to live in 3D;
Developing friendships, Discovering stories, Discerning appropriate next steps
as a means of learning to understand the Holy Spirit’s promptings in your life.

CRAZY LOVE by Francis Chan. Does something
deep inside your heart long to break free from the
status quo? Are
you hungry for an authentic faith that addresses
the problems of our world with tangible, even
radical, solutions? God is calling you to a
passionate love relationship with Himself. Because
the answer to religious complacency isn't working
harder at a list of do's and don'ts — it's falling in
love with God. Francis Chan describes it as; once
you encounter His love, because when you're wildly
in love with someone, it changes everything, you
will never be the same.
New Members Class Membership does matter. Jesus lived and died
for the church (Eph. 5:25). In Christ, you are a
member of the spiritual church. In Christ, you are
called to become a member of a local church. If
you are a Christian and you are not a member of a
local church, then we encourage you to get
connected with a church as soon as possible.
Don’t take this lightly. Your membership with a
church is beneficial and necessary (1 Cor. 12:4–31).
For those interested in membership, the
course is 4 classes that will begins September
14th.
Please sign up at the Welcome Center or call
the church office.
Ladies Monday 7 pm October 6th thru December
The Women of Christmas by Liz Curtis Higgs.
A fresh look at the nativity story through the lives of
Elizabeth, Mary, and Anna. This study tells how the
women anticipated the Messiah’s coming and
longed for his appearing. They cradled God’s
promise in their empty arms, knowing they would
someday be filled. They said yes. They waited. They
trusted.
See Vicky Barbieri to order a book, cost is $9.
Ladies Tuesday 9 am September 9th thru December
Becoming a Woman of Purpose by Cynthia Heald.
We begin the group at 9:30 am for coffee time, and
open our study
about 9:45 am,
then conclude at
10:45am with a
time of prayer.
Ev Prentis will
be leading the
group for this
series.

Souled Out Our Summer of 2014 Adventures
This past summer was awesome! Our students
stepped up in leadership roles during Kidz Camp.
Our JR HI’ers worked themselves into a Frenzy for
5 entire days and enjoyed a day at Michigan’s
Adventure. Our SR HI students camped,
worshipped and sang their way through the
Creation 2014 Christian Music Festival. All the
teens screamed their way through a day at Cedar
Point. They also served and met needs of
community organizations like Compassion
Pregnancy Center, Gleaners Food Bank, Hope
Garden and Hope Center in Macomb. They even
swam a day away at
Red Oaks Water Park,
and sped around CJ
Barrymore’s in go karts
and bumper boats.
Whew! What a great
summer!
Fall Kick-Off 2014
The fall is here and that means that our weekly
Souled Out Youth Meetings kick off starting on
September 3rd and continue all school year long.
Every Wednesday night students will experience
the fun of being with friends while discovering
something about themselves, the God who loves
them, and the plan He has for their lives. All of this
takes place in a friendly and loving environment. In
fact, we’ll spend the month of September looking
into what God has to say about friendships and
discover that they are so much more than being
able to see each other’s posts on Facebook.
So if you are a teen or know a JR HI (7th or 8th
grade) or SR HI student (9th to 12th grade), make
sure they come to Souled Out starting on the first
Wednesday night after Labor Day! And don’t miss
these first few weeks! Trust me you won’t want to!
Students Praying At School
See You at the Pole, the global day of student
prayer, began in 1990 as a grass roots movement
with ten students praying at their school. Twenty
four years later, millions pray on their campuses on
the fourth Wednesday in September. This year the
event is on September 24, typically at 7am
(depending on school start times.)
It is a simple time of prayer by students who meet
at their school flagpole before school to lift up their
friends,
families,
teachers,
school, and
nation to
God. See
You at the
Pole is a
student-
initiated,
student-
organized,
and student-led event. Parents, encourage your
kids to go and pray with other Christian students
on this very important day. Students, make sure
you make this a priority on your calendar. It can be
the beginning of God doing something great on
your campus. Submitted by Pastor Mike Miller

Commit to Pray for a Christian on the Front Lines Chandrashekar, an evangelist in India, was beaten for leading Hindus to
Christ and teaching them about the faith. He was then imprisoned and accused of
converting people by force. Soon after his release, he lost his only source of
income, but he continues his ministry on the front lines in India. “Before I had ...
fear of the radical group's attack,” he said. “But after that my fear is gone. Now I
can share the gospel with much
boldness.”
Before giving his life to
Christ, Elmer persecuted
Christians as a guerrilla
commander in Colombia.
“Instead of being a ‘messenger
of hate’, I am now a ‘messenger
of peace’,” he says. The
guerrillas consider Elmer both a
deserter and a threat for leading
others to Christ. “I know that
many ... would like to kill me,” he says. But despite the risk, Elmer continues to share the gospel on the
front lines in Colombia.
Nadir, pastor of an evangelical church in Kirkuk, Iraq, has survived two bombing attempts. While
dozens from his congregation have fled the country, he has chosen to stay. “Our church has been
bleeding out,” Nadir said, “but I believe all the chairs of the church will be filled by believers from Muslim
backgrounds. They are the new generation of the church.”
Chandrashekar, Elmer and Nadir are among more than 30,000 workers whom Voice Of the Martyrs
partners with on the front lines of some of the world's most hostile areas toward Christ and His
witnesses. They choose to answer God's call despite the threat of beatings, imprisonment and even
death. VOM stands with these bold witnesses, providing them with the tools they need to advance the
kingdom. Now you can join more than 5,000 others who have adopted front-line workers and committed
to praying for them daily.

Summer Missions This summer Bethany partnered with young adults in mission projects. John Clauson was the Health Officer this summer at Camp CedarRidge in Oscoda, Michigan. He was responsible for the health care of the campers and staff. John had many opportunities to use his skills during the camping season, but the most memorable one was when a young girl had difficulty breathing. John still remembers seeing her ashen face as she struggled to breathe. He carried the youngster to a waiting car and used a Bag Value Mask (manual resuscitator) to assist in her breathing as they transported her to the hospital 20 minutes away. Praise the Lord the young girl was sitting up and talking by the time they arrived at the hospital.
Peter and Jessica (Kuhnle) Manwiller have learned to fully rely on the Lord and his provisions as he has guided them through the last year and a half. This summer Peter had the opportunity to serve the Lord at Victory Valley Camp in Zionsville, PA as the Outpost Coordinator. Besides working with the 141 kids that passed through his care, Peter’s responsibilities included organizing and leading the outpost staff and preparing the materials that were used for the summer. The kids thoroughly enjoyed their camp experiences. Peter enjoyed teaching the kids, but he found that sleeping in a tent all summer long was quite tiresome at times. Submitted by Jo Kuhnle
EBOLA FEVER IN West Africa. Ebola fever has been flooding the news lately. The virus is exploding across West Africa. More than 1200 people have already died. This total includes thirty-seven nurses who died in July alone. At least two doctors have died in this crisis. There is no cure for Ebola, but a few people do recover. Pray that in the midst of this tragedy,
God would use SIM and Samaritan’s Purse to offer hope, peace, and salvation in Christ. If you would like to help with the enormous costs of this outbreak, tax-deductible gifts can be sent to: SIM or Samaritan’s Purse P.O. Exciting news The Hagerup’s announce they are expecting baby #7! These kids are
bursting with joy to announce the arrival of a new baby girl or boy. Please pray for this baby, especially as the probability of him/her having Down Syndrome increases dramatically now that Elizabeth is 40 years old. Also pray that they would be godly, patient parents.
They’re praising God for granting them this precious gift (Psalms 127:3). The kids are looking forward to a new sibling and a bigger van, Lord-willing! The Hagerup’s ~ Ben, Elizabeth, Tyler, Zachary, Judson, Owen, Levi & Margee
God’s Word For The World Translating the Bible - Missionaries Don & Pat Block
What if you had no Bible to read in English? Would it make a difference in your life? There are still many people groups in the world who do not
have access to God’s word in their own language. Our missionary, Don Block and his wife Pat, are with Bibles International, a division of Baptist Mid-Missions. Thanks to missionaries like Don, that situation is changing one group at a time. Don is not the translator
of these Scriptures, but after the translations are complete, he and others like him spend many hours, days, and months formatting the new translations for printing. During this process the Bibles are checked and rechecked for any errors.
Three translations have recently passed through the final editing process. Several others are in various stages of completion. Four weeks ago, the Tedim Chin New Testament went to press in Korea. Three weeks ago the Hakha Chin NT went
to the same press. Both of these are bound for Myanmar (formerly Burma). Last week the whole Bible in the Darlong language was sent to Kolkata, India to be printed.
In addition to these, The Dagarre NT (Ghana, West Africa) has just arrived in Grand Rapids for final checking. The Creole revised NT with Psalms and Proverbs added will soon be reprinted. Don says that the Kaulong NT for Papua, New Guinea is on his desk waiting for formatting before going to the printer.
Rejoice with us and with nationals in these various countries as they see God’s Word in their language for the very first time.
While Don was busy with the various translations, his wife Pat was helping cook for 45 attendees at the Bibles International consultant seminar last week. The Blocks are frequently hosting guests in their home, and Pat often acts as interpreter for Haitians in courts, maternity wards, etc. in and around Grand Rapids. Don and Pat recently celebrated 54 years of marriage with a trip to Mackinaw Island. Submitted by Carol Meinhardt

Softball Season Results 2014 was another winning season for Bethany ‘Ladies Softball Team’ as they finished in 1st place. They were one game short of a perfect season. The ‘Men's Softball Team’ had a rebuilding year. They tried moving players to new positions, some worked well and others still need some tweaking. All in all, they ended up in 7th place for the season. The team had a 4th place finish during the playoffs. No matter how the game ended on the field, the team enjoyed some great fellowship time following at Rams Horn.
