WENDY!
Intent behind Wendy
…to increase the amount of fabric on-site, and increase the air quality in the surrounding neighborhood....”
-- HKWN’s objectives in building Wendy(architizer.com)
… and, as any MoMA PS1 winner, it’s party-tough.
So, what’s this Wendy like? Wendy is a fabric-and-steel contraption encased in a
220,000 cubic-foot scaffold: 70 feet square, 45 feet tall.
She is made of bright blue fabric treated with CristalACTiV™ photocatalytic titanium dioxide. These particles break down organic and nitrogen-based compounds in the air, effectively cleaning it of unwanted pollution.
Huge internal fans and water dispensers of all sorts create a fine mist that cools spectators and partygoers, also funneling the clean air outwards and bringing more air to be cleaned inside.

Photocatalytic oxidation – Wendy’s way of breathing
The ions formed react with nitrogen dioxide in the air, forming nitric acid. This is harmlessly neutralized by limestone at the site.
So…can we build it?
Oh, wait…
The placement and distribution of Wendy’s 5500 separate elements took over 300 hours of calculations to determine, and it was evidently successful.
(Unless it fell over as soon as we were out of earshot…)
The process of air-cleaning through Wendy’s two-month lifespan is equivalent to taking 260 cars off the road – a significant contribution to pollution removal.

Criteria
Buildings Cause Pollution…Traditionally, buildings cause lots of pollution because there’s so much power expended by utilities – lights, stoves, elevators, office machines, etc. – inside the buildings draw power from inevitably polluting power plants.HWKN SAYS NO
Wendy is…
ECO - FRIENDLYHWKN seeks to show people how
buildings can be used to heal the environment rather than hurt it
“Wendy” would actually clean the air utilizing nanotechnology rather than harm it
Wendy is…
INVITINGHWKN believes people will view “Wendy” as a friendly, attractive hangout – there are misting jets, water pools, rainbows, shade, and fresh air!
So pick Wendy!
…not Wendy’s. Please.
