CO-CHAPLAIN’S MESSAGE Deacon Will Hunter

Looking at the power of God

So many times during our lifetime we dare to ask the Lord to manifest himself to us in times of strife, trials and heartache. Yet when he does (and he always does) we choose not to recognize his divine power and divine majesty because he does not manifest himself the way we would like for him to do so. Heartache, trials and strife will always be a part of our human condition, yet we often forget that the Lord will also be a part of our human condition. How often do we forget that the Lord has chosen us to be the living, breathing and walking temple in which he works through us to manifest himself to others? We must always strive to make our bodies, spirits and hearts a place for the Lord to dwell comfortably. Each time we receive the Eucharist we become the living temple of the Lord, a temple which should be a place for the Lord to manifest his divine power. The Lord’s divine power should always be present in our lives by the way we respond to others after receiving the Eucharist. The Eucharist should transform us each time we receive the body and blood of Christ. The temple the Lord has created in us should always be a perfect dwelling place for the Lord. A place the Lord should be happy to call his home because of the way we live our lives. Be vigilant always in keeping the temple the Lord has created in each of us clean, welcoming and forgiving. This way the temple will always be a place the Lord will be proud to call his home. Patiently clean your temple with constant kindness, consistent gentleness and most importantly with loving forgiveness. These are the cleaning tools we need to use to keep the temple of the Lord holy and inviting for ourselves and others.

GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE Joe Earthman

Brother Knights, Thanks to all of our Brother Knights who attended this month's council meeting and just a reminder, all are welcome to join us for dinner before the meeting, capped off with "fellowship" in the Knight's Pub right after. We are making a concerted effort to keep our business meetings moving along at a steady clip, while preserving the tradition of the meeting, so don’t be bashful, we’d love to have you join us. The winter season is upon us as the weather changes, I hope we all take special care to bundle up and keep warm. Thanks to all of the ladies and gentlemen who attended the showing of “Blood Money” on November 12. Also, thanks to our Brother Knights who came out for our November workday. I would like to publicly remind all officers, myself included, that the best way to encourage increased participation is to lead by example. Thanks again to Doug Wendt for his continued efforts with Casino Night and to those members who attended the most recent Casino Night follow up meeting. I hope to see lots of familiar faces at our Christmas party and/or New Years Dance. Merry Christmas to you and your families!

Billy Hoffart, Knight of the Month for October.

Mike & Jan Kloss, Family of the Month for October.

End-of-Year Report: The NSCC supports itself through rentals and we are financially sound. However, rentals have continuously declined over the past ten years. I am asking that if you know of someone that needs a rental hall or grounds, please recommend our facilities. Just like our council, the NSCC has a set of officers and chain of command. If you have a suggestion for the operation of the NSCC, bring your suggestion to one of the NSCC board members or officers, we will research your idea and make a decision.

The NSCC makes an annual charitable donation to Council 2917. We are able to make donations like this because we are able to save money on repair and maintenance expenses. We save on these expenses by asking our membership to volunteer their time on the 3rd Saturday of the month workday. On this day we do general repairs and maintenance--lawn, cleaning, electrical, A/C, plumbing, etc., Volunteers allow us a great savings. We also ask our membership to provide their professional services when needed, A/C, electrical, carpentry, plumbing, etc. Most of the time these types of services are provided free, but on occasion we do need to make payment.

Our steady reliable week day worker is Joe Pavlik, he maintains much of the grounds himself. Our Saturday, November 15th workers were light in number but achieved to accomplish many tasks despite the cold weather. The volunteers were: Jimmy Dziedzic, Billy Hoffart, Dennis Kubiak, Nick Navarro and John Buck. I hope to see more next month—holidays do not allow for skipping our monthly duties.

REMINDER: Council 2917 Adult Christmas Party is December 14th, 3 p.m. Social and 5 p.m. catered dinner. If you plan on attending, please RSVP by December 10th. This party is for the members of Council 2917 and spouse/guest and Council 2917 Ladies Auxiliary and spouse/guest. Remember, if you RSVP for the meal, please make the meal or call in advance to cancel your RSVP, we order the number of meals per request. Council 2917 is accepting food donations for our parish food pantries. You can bring your donation of canned and dried goods to the main entrance foyer, a box is placed in the foyer for collection. I will make delivery of these items to the parishes by December 18th. When you come to the Council Christmas Party, this would be a good time to bring your food donations. If you would like to make a cash donation to our council 2917 Food Pantry, we will accept this too. You can give your cash donation to either Benny Okruhlik or John Buck. Our parish food pantries make good use of your donations.

New Year's Eve Dance-your council is hosting this dance. Get a group of friends, church members, etc. together to join in dancing out the Old Year and bring in the New Year.

Pro-Life movie "Blood Money: the Business of Abortion." We had our showing of the movie last month, even though it turned cold that night we had a good turnout. Those that attended learned about the business of abortion-how much money there is to be made from operating an abortion clinic or Planned Parenthood facility. I am going to the council to ask for another showing later, I believe that more need to benefit from the viewing of this movie. For those that attended, I ask you spread the information that you received from this movie and ask your parish pastor if he would like a showing for his parish. I also think that we should advertise this movie to our parish schools and Catholic High Schools. I will make this movie available to our local Catholic schools.

I’m asking all Council 2917 members--men and women alike, to make a New Year's Resolution to be more active and visible at Council 2917. We have many functions that we participate in and our council is large enough that we should and can do more, but our problem is manpower. As it is, we have about 50 good active members that attend meetings and/or volunteer at council functions, but with our membership in excess of 500, we should have a greater attendance at all of our events. We have some members that only come out once a year for an event. It would be really nice to have these members come and show their support to the council more than once a year. I understand that we cannot make all council events, but let us all try in 2015 to make a better showing of ourselves at Council 2917. Try to attend meetings regularly, find time to attend and/or volunteer at some of our events: Bingo, Special Olympics, Casino Night, dances, Toys for Tots, council workdays, and Bingo Kitchen. Strive to become an active Family Member of Council 2917 and not just a name on a roster.

The yearly survey of service hours form will be handed out at the December meeting, please fill out the form that evening or return to me at the January meeting. These service hours include KC and church meetings, VA visitations, visits to the sick, bereaved, and elderly, blood donor, community service, church activities, youth and school activities, pro-life, fraternal service hours, and more. These recorded service hours are important so that we get credit at the Council, State, and Supreme levels. If you are participating in an activity or program that is counted, be counted by turning in your service hours.

All members of Council 2917 and Ladies Auxiliary are invited.

Sunday, December 14 Cocktails beginning at 3:00 p.m. — Dinner served at 5:00 p.m.

This is a free catered dinner for members and their spouse/guest. Dinners ordered will be based on RSVP count.

Please be sure to RSVP by December 10 to Kathy Bronikowski at 281-356-3535 or [email protected]

The Ladies Auxiliary will have a raffle at the party. If you would like to make a donation to the raffle— cash or gift cards ONLY—please contact: Doris Henderson at 713-466-0606 by December 8.

KC wives and Ladies Auxiliary members, if you are able to attend this event, please bring a dessert to share.

The dance will be on Friday Dec. 5th with the cook-off on Saturday Dec. 6th. See elsewhere in bulletin for more info. The Knights of Columbus Adult Christmas Party will be on Sunday, December 14th

Sir Knights: A turnout request is scheduled for Dec. 6 at the Co-Cathedral for a Confirmation Mass with Cardinal Dinardo as the celebrant. Line up will be at 4:30 p.m. with Mass beginning at 5:00 p.m. The Wilhelm Assembly Christmas Party is Dec. 7 at the Cathedral Center. Each Sir Knight and their spouse or guest is invited. Start time is 2:00 p.m. with refreshments and a catered meal by Mikeska’s BBQ from Columbus, TX. The Assembly is also sponsoring a raffle with 11 prizes totaling $2,150.00. It is important that each Sir Knight purchase at least 3 books for $30.00. You can mail in your money and ticket stubs along with your dues and we will take care of the rest. SK Bill Florez PFN, our raffle coordinator is in dire need of your help in selling raffle tickets at various churches before and after Mass. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Do the selling before Mass—attend the Mass—then sell after Mass. You can call Bill at 713-628-7811 for the Church and Mass times. The whole book only costs you $10.00 but you get a free car wash coupon at any DR. GLEEM location which essentially has the same value as the whole book of tickets. If you don’t want to use a car wash, use the coupon as a stocking stuffer. What a deal!!!
