Initial Situation

• Need for central access point for growing digital repositories

• need for a registry of collections, items and film-specific authority files on a trans-institutional, trans-national level

• Need of common standards for database & record structures suitable for the needs of film archives

• Need to build knowledge and best practices when it comes to dealing with IPR issues in the context of web-based access

• Need to face growing user expectations

Page 6: Welter, Debole - European Film Gateway metadata schema @EUscreen Mykonos

What is EFG supposed to achieve?• Build a „digital showcase“ for collections of

Europe‘s film archives and cinematheques– Moving images: Films and film clips, trailers etc.– Images: Posters, images, stills, drawings etc.– Text material: Reviews, correspondence,

censorship documents etc.– Sound material: Interviews etc.

• Registry of digital objects and authority records (works of film, persons)

• Agreement on common interoperability standards for film archives and cinémathèques

• Best practices for rights identification

Page 7: Welter, Debole - European Film Gateway metadata schema @EUscreen Mykonos

Content Selection

• No content selection strategy• EFG to use already existing digital

objects• EFG mainly to rely on material that

has already been rights cleared • Narrowing down content to themes

for EFG would mean extremely little content to present

• EFG will give access to ca. 700.000 items

Current state of things

• Data ingestion since Aug 2009 ongoing• Data delivered to Europeana• Front-end development started Jan 2010• First prototype version internally: Jul

2010• Internal testing and bug-fixing until Sept• Public launch scheduled for Oct 2010• Consolidating film work and person

authority files, linking objects to authority records, further ingests until Aug 2011

Metadata interoperability & CWS

• Cinematographic Works Standard (CWS) partially applied in EFG

• Current drafts and news: www.filmstandards.org

• Part 1 specifies a minimum set of information elements for the unambiguous identification of film works.Primary goal not to generate new metadata

• Part 2 is a specification for structuring machine-processable metadata about cinematographic works. This part of the standard can be used as a basis for data exchange between existing catalogue systems.
