Loves Learns Serves Shares These are the verbs we use to describe what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ here at FVUMC. As a Christ-centered community that “learns,” followers of Jesus Christ live a lifetime of learning. We are learning how to live out our lives as followers of Christ in the culture, community, world and season of life that we are experiencing. What does that look like? How do we do this? We do this in the context of community of faith. Hopefully, by now you have heard about the youth and adult Covenant Life Groups that will begin meeting in September. Have you registered for a Life Group? We learn about God and one another through learning the Scriptures in smaller groups and we learn about one another around the table. It is through smaller groups of all kinds we learn how to love God and love people no matter how different we may be. With this thought in mind I invite you the table, a table where you can learn the stories of the Scripture and learn about God around a table with people who are doing life, facing similar life “stuff” and seeking to be faithful followers of Jesus Christ. At this table, we will learn together, laugh together and pray about things together. We may weep a little, and we will learn about each other. I believe this study and our small groups are the foundation supporting this church as we move deeper into what it means to be faithful community following Jesus Christ. See you at the table! Loves Learns Serves SharesThese are the verbs we use to describe what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ here at FVUMC.

Deep and authentic community This fall, we are launching a program called Covenant that we pray brings many in our church into authentic community and deep exploration of God’s Word.

The Covenant studies are shaped around Life Groups where people form genuine relationships as they study the Scriptures together. This is not “just a Bible study” where you learn stuff. This is a transformational experience that can greatly change and shape our church community.

Learning togetherAs you participate in Covenant, daily emails are delivered to your inbox which include the full text of the Bible readings. The program is organized into three 8-week segments exploring a third of the Bible.

Creating the Covenant begins in September, and goes through October. In the new year, the study continues with Living the Covenant and Trusting the Covenant. Our schedule pauses during special seasons including Thanksgiving, Advent, Christmas, Holy Week and spring break.

Come to the tableWe are studying the Bible together as an entire church and seeing what God will do in our midst! Learn more at fvumc.org/covenant

Brothers and Sisters, summer greetings from the cluttered desk of Pastor Valerie! I echo the invitation extended by Pastors Gene and Kevin to come, come, come to the table and join us for Covenant. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to engage in the study of Scripture and learn the foundational stories of our faith together.

I don’t know about you, but from time to time, I need to return to the rich stories in Scripture to refresh my memory and glean new insights. In addition to the intentional study of Scripture, another place we might need to refresh ourselves from time to time is in our beliefs as United Methodists.

Perhaps this is a good opportunity for us to “brush up!” Therefore, let me offer to you United Methodists Believe authored by Bishop Kenneth L. Carder of the Florida Conference and published in The United Methodist Handbook. If you would like to delve a little deeper, check out The United Methodist Church online at umc.org!

Pastor Valerie

United Methodists Believe in the Triune God, the Trinity — Father, Son and Holy Spirit• God the Father/Creator, who brings creation into

existence, upholds and reveals the ways of life that make for peace and wholeness, and ever works to heal and transform life through the power of love.

• God the Son, Jesus Christ, the firstborn of a new creation who through his life, death and Resurrection saves us and all creation from the power of sin and death.

• God the Holy Spirit, who comforts, sustains, guides and empowers us to participate in God’s life and mission in the world.

We Believe every person is a beloved child of God• Whom God created in God’s divine image, with

inherent worth and dignity.

• Who confronts and suffers the distorting and destructive effects of sin in this life.

• Whom God has reconciled in the life, death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, defeating the powers of sin and death.

• Whom God seeks to make holy and whole, through the presence of the Holy Spirit, transforming us into Christlikeness.

We Believe in the Church as the community called to be instruments of God’s presence and coming reign in Jesus Christ

• Where people worship God joyfully, proclaim God’s Word faithfully and share the sacraments of baptism and Holy Communion.

• Where all people are welcomed and nurtured as God’s sons and daughters.

• Where people are initiated into Christ’s body and nurtured toward Christian maturity through worship, prayer, study, fellowship and service.

• Where the light of God’s love, justice and peace exposes and overrules evil, injustice and sin.

• Where we participate in God’s mission of inviting, preparing and enlisting disciples of Jesus Christ to transform the world and to follow the risen Christ, in the power of the Holy Spirit, into the hurting places of the world and among the outcasts and the forgotten.

We Believe in the Bible as God’s revealed Word• Authoritative in matters of faith and practice.

• Containing the story of God’s mighty acts of salvation in creation, in faithful engagement with people through the ages and supremely in Jesus Christ.

• The primary source for understanding the nature and purposes of God.

• Interpreted in the power of the Holy Spirit present in the community of faith.

Finance Committee CelebrationsYour contributions of time, talents and resources are much appreciated and are making a significant difference! Our church is growing in its mission work, as well as in its support of adult, youth and children’s studies. We have exciting plans to continue to grow all of these areas, while also making much needed infrastructure improvements. None of this is possible without your continued support, so thank you very much for all you do!

Through the beginning of July, we celebrate that your faithful gifts are meeting the needs of our 2014 budget. Compared to the past two years, we also celebrate that attendance is increasing.

A weekly trend for contributions and attendance can be found below.

If you ever have any financially-related questions about our church, please do not hesitate to contact Donna Massengill, Finance Committee Chair, at 919-557-5065 or Joan Thomas, Director of Finance and Administration, at 919-552-4331. We would be more than happy to answer any questions.

Enclosed is your giving statement for the second quarter of 2014. Thank you again, on behalf of our entire congregation, for your faithful support which allows us to demonstrate we are a Christ-Centered Community that Loves God, Learns God, Serves God and Shares God!

Gene Tyson Donna Massengill Lead Pastor 2014 Finance Chair

Staff Parish UpdatesStaff Parish would like to announce that Bob Anderson will be retiring as Property Manager at the end of August. We are indebted to Bob for the expertise he brought to looking after our facilities. We wish him and Bev the best in their retirement together and are pleased that they will remain members of our church. We are updating the job description and conducting a search to fill this position.

We are pleased to share that Amanda Rackley has joined our staff as Director of Children and Family Ministries. She brings experience working with children both as a school teacher and in church settings. You can read more about Amanda on page 8.

The SPRC regrets that Lisa Morton resigned from the Youth Director position in late July.

Through prayerful reflection, Lisa discerned that this role was not what God was calling her to at this time. We are re-advertising this position.

As mentioned in the July Wellspring, we have come to realize that our music ministry is in need of greater staff support. Unfortunately, Ted Willis is not available to provide more support, and our national search for a new part-time Director of Traditional Music continues.

As we work to fill these openings, we ask for your prayers that the Lord will guide us to the right individuals to fill these vital positions.

Serving & Sharing GodHabitat For Humanity Workdays Coming This FallThis fall, FVUMC is working with Habitat for Humanity of Wake County and partnering with 6 other area churches, including St. Bernadette’s here in Fuquay, as well as the corporation of Cisco Systems to help fund and build a house for a family from Kenya. Veronica and her daughter have been in the US for about 3 years.

We have assigned work days (primarily Saturdays) listed below where we will need YOU to sign up in advance at the following website: http://vhub.at/southwestcoalition

Our assigned work days are as follows:

• Saturday, September 6 – Ground “blessing” day, need 10 volunteers

• Thursday, September 25 – Wake County Schools are OUT this day – need 10 volunteers including youth age 16 and older.

• Saturday, October 25 – Need 15 volunteers for our Serve and Share Weekend

• Saturday, November 8 – Need 9 volunteers

• Saturday, November 22 – LAST VOLUNTEER DAY – Need 5 volunteers

We usually try to meet up at FVUMC the morning of our assigned work day and carpool up to Apex. However, if you want to drive on your own, all volunteers are to meet up and park at Sovereign Grace Church on 401 Upchurch St. Apex NC (just off Hwy. 55) at 8 am.

We will begin with a safety briefing and then head to the work site as a group. The work day ends at 3:30 pm. Volunteers must be at least 16 yrs old and no construction experience is required (just a positive attitude and a “Love for the Lord”).

Please be sure to attend church on Sunday, August 24, where we will highlight Habitat for Humanity prior to the start of our build.

Also, be on the lookout for the NEW Habitat ReStore opening in Fuquay-Varina next to Tractor Supply store in the fall. Volunteers will be needed there as well.

If you have any questions about Habitat, please contact Mark Bethea at [email protected].

Pillowcase Party: Sewing With A CauseDo you have a sewing machine? Do you remember how to thread it? Can you sew a straight seam (at least some of the time)?

Even if you answered “No” to these questions, you are still invited to join our church’s Quilting with Faith quilters for a fun evening of food, fellowship, and sewing on Friday, August 22 from 6:30 to 10:00 PM.

After a light salad bar supper, members of our quilting circle will guide participants in making a pillowcase which will be completed that evening. Pillowcase kits will be available for purchase or participants can bring their own fabrics. Pillowcases will be donated to local hospitals for use with children.

Quilt Sale for Missions Watch for early glimpses of selections from our Quilting with Faith group’s quilt sale set for Saturday, October 18 to raise money for missions of the church.

Quilts, table runners, and wall hangings will be available. Buyers will identify the mission to which the proceeds are donated!

Serving our SeniorsIt’s that time again, when we plan a Senior Celebration for the ladies and gents over 60 years of age, and we need your help!

The celebration dinner is set for Saturday, Sept. 13 at 5:30pm. To make this a divine happening, we need table decorators, kitchen servers, cleaners, and food servers. This is a wonderful way to show our love and gratitude to many of those who are the foundation of our church.

Make this a family project and come and help make this event possible!

Sign up to help will be in the lobby and the main office. For more information, call Lynne Sorrels at 919-557-1568.

Seniors: Mark your calendar for Sept. 13, and plan to sign up in early September! This year’s theme is “The Cup of Our Life.”

We Believe in the final triumph of God’s reign of compassion, justice, generosity and peace• Anticipating first fruits made possible today through

the power of the Spirit and the reign of Christ.

• Discovering a renewed creation where sin, suffering and death are overcome and God’s victory is complete.

• Celebrating with all the faithful who are raised to live eternally in God’s loving presence.

• Extending God’s love to the whole creation, with

• God’s mercy redeeming all of God’s works, all that God loves.

Children Learning GodAmanda? Who’s Amanda?I am the new Director of Children and Family Ministries – or maybe better known as “the new Emily!”

I am beyond thrilled to be joining the FVUMC family and have had a great time getting to know your new faces and names.

I grew up in Duplin County in a town called Beulaville and moved to Raleigh in 2002 to attend Meredith College. I graduated from Meredith with a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education and taught at West Smithfield Elementary School in Johnston County for three years.

In 2009, I moved to Durham to enroll in the Master of Divinity program at Duke University and from there, moved to Bahama (north Durham) to be closer to a church that I was serving.

I have 12 years of combined teaching and ministry experience including serving as Music Minister in 4 churches and serving as a Chaplain at UNC Hospitals.

I am passionate about working with children, sharing music, and being involved in mission opportunities. Some of my hobbies include cooking, cake decorating, and ballroom dancing.

My husband, Bobby, and I just recently moved to Fuquay-Varina and are very excited to be part of this great community. You will see him from time to time, but he is currently working on his Doctor of Theology degree at Duke University full-time and also works part-time as a Youth Pastor in Pittsboro.

We do not have human children at this time, but we do have furry and feathered children: our miniature schnauzer, Sebastian, and our parrot, Rio.

We look forward to getting to know you better, serving alongside of you, and being open to the many things that God will do not only in our Children and Family Ministries, but in our entire church!

Amanda

Children’s Ministry TeamAre you interested in helping guide the vision and mission of the children and family ministries at FVUMC? If so, we need YOU to be a part of our new Children’s Ministry Team.

This is not an action or planning committee since we already have many people who help guide and plan activities and programs that happen in our church.

Instead, this is a visioning team that will be looking at the overall trajectory of our children and family ministries.

This team is open anyone interested in being involved and all are welcome to attend. We will try to have our first meeting at the end of August, so watch for the specific date in the bulletin and on the FVUMC website!

Promotion Sunday Is September 7It’s that time of year again! Promotion Sunday is September 7, and this is the day that students are promoted to their next grade/age level Sunday school class.

This also officially marks the kick-off of our fall programming on Sunday afternoons: Faith

Weaver Friends and Kids for Christ (KFC).

Sunday school registration will begin on Sunday, August 17.

You can fill out a printed form and drop it off to the church office, or fill out the registration form online at fvumc.org/registrations. Parents, save some time on September 7 and pre-register for Sunday school!8

Children’s Message

in WorshipBeginning September 7, we are excited to introduce a weekly Children’s Message during 11:00 Worship.

Early in the service each Sunday morning, children will be invited to come forward for a special time with one of our pastors, and to hear a brief message just for them!

Following the Children’s Message, kids will move into their age appropriate Sunday School classes.

Children are always welcome in our worship services, and we can’t wait to worship together at the 11:00 service!

Growing our Children in God’s LoveOur Sunday school team is in need of volunteers for the 2014-15 Sunday school year. We are looking for team members who are passionate about working with children and who want to help them grow closer to God.

Teaching Sunday school does require a commitment of time, presence, and energy, but the rewards far outweigh the costs! There are opportunities to serve at the 9:30am or the 11:00 Sunday school hours. Please contact Amanda Rackley ([email protected] or (919) 552-4331 ext. 113) for more details or to volunteer!

Sunday School Leader TrainingOur Sunday school theme for this year is: “Growing our Children in God’s Love.” If you are a children’s wing greeter, Nursery staff or volunteer, Sunday school superintendent, and Sunday school teacher or substitute, you are invited to join our Sunday school leader training event on Sunday, August 24 at 12:30pm at Anna’s Pizza in downtown Fuquay.

We are providing lunch for you, so come ready to hear about some exciting things that we’ll be doing in Sunday school this year and ready to contribute any thoughts or ideas you may have as well. Please let Amanda Rackley ([email protected]) know if you are able to attend by Wednesday, August 20.

Grow, Proclaim Serve August Theme: Peacemaking9:30am Sunday School (Preschool & Elementary)

11:00am Sunday School (Elementary Only)

MEMORY VERSE: “Happy are people who make peace, because they will be called God’s children.” Matthew 5:9

LEAP OF FAITH: I can be a peacemaker.

AUGUST 3 – Abraham and Lot (Genesis 13)Abraham and Lot were family. When God told Abraham to move his family, Lot went with him. They both had many possessions and animals and had to keep moving their camp in order to have enough space. Disagreements began happening among their shepherds, so Abraham decided that they should separate in order to have enough space. Abraham was a peacemaker. Sometimes, it’s normal for families to disagree. This week, let’s look for opportunities to be peacemakers.

AUGUST 10 – David and Abigail (1 Samuel 25: 1-42) David was the leader of an army that made sure Nabal’s sheep and shepherds were safe. When David and his army ran out of food, they asked Nabal for food to eat, but Nabal was mean and refused to help. Nabal’s wife, Abigail, heard what happened and prepared a feast of food for David and his army and stopped David from attacking Nabal’s family. How can we be peacemakers even when people around us are not acting peaceably?

AUGUST 17 – Mephibosheth (2 Samuel 9:1-13)David and Jonathan were best friends. When David became king, he found out that Jonathan’s son, Mephiboseth, was still alive. It was not uncommon for new kings to kill all of the previous king’s sons and grandsons, but David had promised never to be cruel to Jonathan’s family. He took care of Mephiboseth and was a peacemaker by being kind. Let’s look for opportunities this week to be kind to others.

AUGUST 24 – Love Your Enemies (Matthew 5:43-48)Jesus tells us that we should not only love our neighbors, but that we should also love our enemies. God loves everyone, and since we our children of God, we should love everyone, too. It is not always easy to love everyone, but with God’s help we can bring peace. Look for opportunities to be loving this week.

AUGUST 31 – Blessed Are… (Matthew 5:9)Today’s Bible story is taken from our Bible verse for this month. This verse comes from the “Beatitudes,” which

is a series of sayings taken from the Sermon on the

Mount. Sometimes, the way Jesus teaches us how to live can be different from what the world tells us and it’s not always easy. This week, pray that God will continue to show us how to be peacemakers in our world.

11:00am Sunday School (Preschool only)

We ask God to forgive us.

AUGUST 3 – Jonah Disobeys God (Jonah 1:1-3)God told Jonah to go to Ninevah, but Jonah did not want to go. Instead, he went and jumped on a boat so that he could run away. Sometimes we have to do things we don’t want to do, but we should always obey God and our parents.

AUGUST 10 – Jonah Gets in Trouble (Jonah 1:4-17)God sent a great wind and violent storm on the sea where the boat was sailing. Jonah was below deck asleep when he heard the sailors throwing out cargo to make the ship lighter. The storm was getting worse, so Jonah told the sailors to throw him off the ship. God provided a great fish to swallow Jonah and he was in the belly for three days and three nights. Even though Jonah was trying to run away from God, God still knew what Jonah had done and God provided for Jonah.

AUGUST 17 – Jonah Says He’s Sorry (Jonah 2)While Jonah was inside the belly of the large fish, he felt bad about what he had done and he cried out in prayer to God asking for forgiveness and mercy. God made the fish spit Jonah out. Sometimes we will disobey God and our parents because we are not perfect, but when we do, we should always say that we’re sorry.

AUGUST 24 – Jonah Does the Right Thing (Jonah 3)God told Jonah to go to Ninevah and this time Jonah obeyed God. When we are given a second chance, we should do the right thing and obey God and our parents. Pray that God will help us know how we should obey.

AUGUST 31 – Jesus Walks on Water (Matthew 14:22-26)Jesus came to his disciples walking on the water and when Peter saw that he was Jesus, he wanted to do it, too. Peter began walking on the water, but started to sink. Jesus reached out his hand and helped Peter up. Sometimes it can be very hard, but we should always trust in God.
