SELECT REHABILITION NEWS By: Director of Rehab, Lauren Krisch

Winter Safety: Preventing Falls – Older adults run a higher risk of health problems and injuries related to the weather, including falls in ice and snow. Whether you stay home or travel north it is

easy to slip and fall in the winter, especially in icy and snowy conditions. Here are a few safety tips and precautions to prevent falls during the winter months:

Page 5: WELLNESS & LIFE ENRICHMENT STAFF BST EAST … · to help you understand the FITT principle and learn the latest ... referral management team and provide the ... 11:30am-12:30pm. To

LE 5 BSTE Wellness & Life Enrichment January 2018 Edition

Be careful if you see wet pavement that could be iced over

Wear boots with non‐skid soles

Take off shoes as soon as you return indoors. Often snow and ice attach to the soles and, once melted, can lead to slippery conditions inside.

Things we do to keep our homes warm in winter can create tripping hazards:

Keep space heaters, cords and blankets out of walkways

If you must use throw rugs on cold floors, secure them to the floor with tape. How can therapy help prevent falls during the winter months? By seeking professional advice to analyze your unique situation, the rehabilitation team can offer assistance and guidance to minimize falls and increase home safety during winter. For additional information on how therapy can help you prevent falls, please call Lauren Krisch at (210) 568-5171

Hope Santos, Life Enrichment Manager Carol Estala, Activities Coordinator

New Walking Club - Walking is a gentle, low impact exercise. It’s one of your body’s most natural forms of exercise. It’s safe, simple and doesn’t require a lot of practice. Take it one step at a time. This is good advice figuratively speaking, but also literally. Did you know taking a brisk walk for 20 minutes a day could help

better manage your weight and stress level? We will have an informational meeting Thursday, Jan 4, at 2pm, in the Fitness Center.

Blue Skies is now offering Personal Trainer Services. Personal Trainers help clients to reach their fitness goals through cardio, strength training, stretching and flexibility exercises. Personal Trainers work one-on-one with clients to develop personalized fitness plans. The cost for one hour Personal Training Session is $40. Call Hope Santos for more information, (210) 568-5200.
