Getting Back to Your Roots: Ten Local Superfoods To Loose Weight, Prevent Disease and Feel Connected To Your Community

Sample Keynote Talks

If we actually ate the way our ancestors ate, we wouldn’t suffer from the diseases that are so frequent today. This talk is about rediscovering and reintegrating healthy “super foods” that can be found in our own backyards. Using examples from the

longest living societies in the world, Tamer will share his philosophy around local and sustainable eating - and why it’s not just good for your health, but the health of the planet as well.

In this talk, participants will learn:

• Why “shaking the hand that feeds you” matters more today than ever before • Ten local “Super foods” and research on how they can help prevent, and even reverse, chronic

diseases • Exploring the difference between labels such as organic, local, sustainable, non-GMO and non-

organic, and which is the best option for different food items • The role community - such as farmers markets and sharing a meal with others - plays in boosting

your immune system and increasing happiness

“Tamer is an inspirational speaker and can take a room full of people and truly change their lives. He cares deeply about his topic and the people he works with and it is this combination of

knowledge and care which makes him so good at what he does.”

Trying to make a healthy change in your company, organization or community - but it just won't stick?

Tamer believes that in order to transform a healthy behaviour into a habit, we need to start by re-discovering the Bright Spots that surround us.

But what exactly are Bright Spots and how can they help?

“Bright Spot” is a term coined by researcher Jerry Sternin and is defined as a traditional and successful practice that is accessible and sustainable - but, for whatever reason, has fallen by the wayside. If re-embraced, a Bright Spot can be a powerful gateway that changes behaviours, lives and communities for the better.

While working in the Cayman Islands, Tamer discovered a local Bright Spot - the coconut - and through educational talks and film, was able to be a part of the revival of the local food movement, which not only benefitted individuals but the Cayman society as a whole.

Bright Spots aren't necessarily traditional foods, rather they are a guiding philosophy of how to make real, positive changes in the health and well-being of a population. Closely related to what behavioural psychologists call "keystone habits.” it's a proven way to make sustainable, effective changes for good.

In this talk, attendees will learn:

• How to find your Bright Spot, and the role it can play in making your wellness initiatives successful • How to avoid overwhelming the community and individuals you’re seeking to create change in • How focusing on one habit, one behaviour and one action can lead to other healthful habits or

actions

Avoid putting time, energy and effort into another failed initiative - instead, book this talk with Tamer to create meaningful, lasting change.

“I have known Tamer for more than 10 years, first as my personal trainer at the Toronto Athletic Club and then as a nutritional adviser, life coach and close friend. Tamer’s calm and caring personality combined with his enthusiasm for nutrition, including a curiosity for the history of cultural eating patterns has made him a leader in his field. I want to see more documentaries from Tamer like Bright Spot to learn more.”

While we often think about our state of health as what we eat and how much we exercise, there is another critical component that is often not discussed, one that hugely influences our state of wellbeing, and that is our sense of community. This doesn’t just affect our personal health, but the health of society as a whole. And unfortunately, many of us aren’t doing so well when it comes to this component of our wellbeing.

During the making of the film, The Great Disconnect, Tamer learned that experts have described our time as the “age of loneliness.” We’re socializing less often, we’re talking to our neighbours less often and we’re have trouble making new friends. The nature of our jobs and how we value our time is separating us more than ever, and we’re all feeling the negative impacts of this way of living.

Despite all of this, Tamer believes that there are many ways that we can regain a sense of community. And he wants to share it with you in this talk.

During this talk, Tamer will discuss:

• The fascinating relationship between our physical and mental health and our relationships • How the design of our communities impact the quality and quantity of our social ties • The dangerous ways technology and media can separate us, and how we can instead use it to bring

us together • Forms of capital (natural, social, economic and human) and how all four play a role in community

wellbeing • Stories of diverse neighbourhoods and communities that have used the power of food and gardens

to find ways to come together

As Tamer narrates in the documentary: Devoting time, effort and energy into your community is one of the most solid investments you can make - because the more you give, the more you’ll get back - and what you stand to gain is priceless.

A common goal for companies and organizations is to find ways to increase employee productivity, engagement and overall well-being.  Statistics show over and over again that in our current job market, these factors are key to high performance and retention - sometimes even more so than salaries.

Regardless of whether we live to work or work to live, our working lives take a

lot out of us. Stress drains vitamins and minerals out of our systems, putting us in unwanted moods and diminishing our willpower - negatively affecting our ability to be fully present, motivated and feeling our best.

Learning to identify what's emptying our tanks - and how to fuel for performance instead - will help your employees to become more productive, engaged and high-performing individuals in all aspects of their lives.

“Tamer captured the interest of a culturally diversified set of employees over a series of six lectures on healthy eating. I was surprised at the level of follow up by the employees and the continued support from Tamer. More importantly two employees lost a considerable amount of weight and are now enjoying wearing more fashionable and trendy clothes to admiration of the others. We all enjoyed Tamer’s amusing style and depth of knowledge. I would highly recommend him as an expert on nutrition and fitness.”
