Additionally, he inspired designers. All you have to do is tune into some of the Twitter streams of those in

fashion. DesignerBrian Atwood lamented Michael's death as well as Farrah Faucet's passing on Twitter,

RIP Farrah and Micahel Jackson...We will remember you both....!! So sad.

What's great was the symbiotic relationship that Michael had with fashion and that fashion had with Michael.

The best example is theSpring 2009 Balmine collection.

Their military inspired jacket couldn't help but remind you of Michael. Of course, because fashion definitely

influences entertainers we saw other celebrities pick up the trend. Now we're seeing a strong 80s-retro feel

probably worn best right now by pop diva Rihanna.

However, it's symbiotic in that Michael was a legendary shopper. This year he was photographed wearing

    pieces from the Balmine collection.

    So who inspired whom?

Does it really matter? He drew from the fashion world and they drew from him.

We won't be able to see Michael in the planned bedazzled Swarovski designs for his scheduled This is It

concert dates. But what we do know is it would have been attention grabbing and influential.

King of Pop, you'll be missed. You'll inspire fashion for years to come.

    Rest in Peace, Michael.

    The 'Thriller' album cover

Eons have passed since anyone paid attention to Michael Jackson for a happy reason. But this week, the endless

parade of high scandals and low antics deserves to be overshadowed by the anniversary of a key moment in pop

    history that he made happen.

Twenty-five years ago - on Saturday, Dec. 1, 1982 - Jackson delivered "Thriller," a terse nine-song set that threw

so huge a boulder into the pop pool that it ripples to this day. It wasn't just the music: "Thriller's" related products

and performances affected video, dance and fashion on levels that had to do with everything from esthetics to

    race.

To commemorate such a startling divide, The News has learned, Jackson's former record company, Sony, plans

to issue a commemorative package of the classic work on Feb. 5. The set will combine "Thriller's" original songs

with four remixes of its hits, overseen by Kanye West, will.i.am and Akon. An additional track, titled "For All Time"

    - cut back in the day but left out of the initial set - will be included, along with a DVD that collects the star's most

iconic video footage from the era.

At the same time comes word from Jermaine Jackson of a full Jackson 5 reunion tour for 2008, their first road

show since they came together to catch the tail end of "Thriller" mania in 1984.

As with all works that jump-start history, it's hard to remember what things were like before "Thriller" came

barreling along. Jackson's album carved out a sound, courtesy of producer Quincy Jones, that virtually defined

'80s style and production. Such songs as "Beat It" and "Billie Jean" housed rhythms and textures like none before. And the songs begat videos that greatly elaborated that emerging art form.

It may sound like nothing at this point, but the mere use of the real sound of a garage door opening at the start of

the "Beat It" clip startled back then. When fans first caught sight of that clip, it hit with the creative bang of "The

Birth of a Nation." Nothing in the medium was the same thereafter.

Likewise, Jackson's fancy moves changed the role of dance in pop, pushing it decisively to center stage.

Jackson's moonwalk took that achievement to the ultimate level. As seen on the TV special "Motown 25:

Yesterday, Today, Forever" in 1983, the moonwalk became one of the transcendent moments in pop history,

approaching the Beatles' appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show." All pop fans remember where they were at the

precise moment Jackson went up on his toes and moved backward with a glide that seemed to defy gravity, timeand space.

Moonwalking The moonwalk has become synonymous with Michael Jackson and is widelyacknowledged as the best-known dance-move in the world. It gained popularity after being

performed by Jackson on the 1983 television special Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever. The technique, which was first recorded in 1943, presents the illusion that the dancer isstepping forward whilst actually moving backward.

Glove The single white glove, often covered in sequins, became a signature part of

    Jackson's stage costumes.

Ow! Many of Jackson's most celebrated songs are peppered with his famous high-pitchedscreech.

Crotch-grabbing Jackson had the habit of grabbing his crotch on numerous occasionsduring his dance routines. When Oprah Winfrey, the US talk-show queen, asked him why, hereplied: "... you become the emotion of what that sound is, OK, so if I'm doing a move and Igo bam, and I grab myself, it's the music that compels me to do it, it's not I'm saying 'get readygrab down there' you don't think about it, it just happens, sometimes I look back at the footageand think 'did I do that?'"

Dress sense Jackson adopted a very distinct style which he followed through much of hislife. He was frequently seen dressed in black loafers, white socks, black slim-fit trousers andwhite v-neck T-shirt with a monogrammed military-style jacket, often with epaulettes.

Bubbles the chimp Jackson adopted the three-year-old chimp from a cancer research clinicin Texas. Bubbles sat in for the recording sessions of the Bad album and escorted Jackson forthe filming of the music video. During the Bad World Tour, he and the singer shared a two-

    bedroom hotel suite in Tokyo.

Bubbles initially resided at the Jackson family's Encino home, but moved to Neverland Ranch

in 1988, where he slept in a crib at the corner of Jackson's bedroom.

The chimp was allowed to use Jackson's private lavatory, although he sometimes wore adiaper.

In a 2003 documentary, Living with Michael Jackson, the singer revealed to journalist MartinBashir that Bubbles had become overly aggressive. He was removed to an animal sanctuary

over fears he may attack Jackson's newborn son, Prince Michael II.

Peter Pan Jackson styled himself as the real-life Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up. Heturned his home, Neverland Ranch, into a children's paradise complete with fairground ridesand collected art work, rumoured to be worth millions, which depicted the J M Barriecharacter.

Plastic surgery The singer's changing appearance has been well documented in the press.By the 1980s it was noted that Jackson's skin tone was gradually lightening while the shape ofhis nose and chin had changed.

He had always been reluctant to discuss the extent of his surgery but admitted to somerhinoplasty and having a cleft put in his chin. Cosmetic surgeons have also speculated thatJackson had undergone multiple nasal surgeries which left him with a strikingly thin nose, aforehead lift, thinned lips and a cheekbone surgery.

Jackson's lightened skin tone was due to the diseases vitiligo and lupus which he wasdiagnosed with in 1986 and he chose to cover up the blotches with make-up.

Surgical mask In the final years of his life Jackson was rarely seen in public without asurgical mask covering his mouth and nose. The habit prompted many rumours about hisdeclining health.

(CNN) -- Michael Jackson, the show-stopping singer whose best-selling albums -- including "Off the Wall,"

"Thriller" and "Bad" -- and electrifying stage presence made him one of the most popular artists of all time, died

    Thursday, CNN has confirmed.

Michael Jackson, shown in 2008, was one of the biggest pop stars in history.

    He was 50.

He collapsed at his residence in the Holmby Hills section of Los Angeles, California, about noon Pacific time,

suffering cardiac arrest, according to brother Randy Jackson. He died at UCLA Medical Center.

Lt. Fred Corral of the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office said an autopsy would probably be done on the singer

Friday, with results expected that afternoon. Watch crowds gather at Jackson's hospital

"Michael Jackson made culture accept a person of color," the Rev. Al Sharpton said. "To say an 'icon' would only

give these young people in Harlem a fraction of what he was. He was a historic figure that people will measure

    music and the industry by."

Jackson's blazing rise to stardom -- and later fall from grace -- is among the most startling of show business

tales. The son of a steelworker, he rose to fame as the lead singer of the Jackson 5, a band he formed with his

brothers in the late 1960s. By the late '70s, as a solo artist, he was topping the charts with cuts from "Off the

Wall," including "Rock With You" and "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough." Watch Jackson perform at a 1988 concert

In 1982, he released "Thriller," an album that eventually produced seven hit singles. An appearance the next year

on a Motown Records 25th-anniversary special cemented his status as the biggest star in the country. Timeline:

    The life of Michael Jackson

For the rest of the 1980s, they came no bigger. "Thriller's" follow-up, 1987's "Bad," sold almost as many copies. A

new Jackson album -- a new Jackson appearance -- was a pop culture event.iReport: Share your memories of

    Michael Jackson

The pop music landscape was changing, however, opening up for rap, hip-hop and what came to be called

"alternative" -- and Jackson was seen as out of step.

His next release, 1991's "Dangerous," debuted at No. 1 but "only" produced one top-ranking single -- "Black or

White" -- and that song earned criticism for its inexplicably violent ending, in which Jackson was seen smashing

car windows and clutching his crotch.

And then "Dangerous" was knocked out of its No. 1 spot on the album charts by Nirvana's "Nevermind," an

occurrence noted for its symbolism by rock critics.

After that, more attention was paid to Jackson's private life than his music career, which faltered. A 1995 two-CD

greatest hits, "HIStory," sold relatively poorly, given the huge expense of Jackson's recording contract: about 7

million copies, according to Recording Industry of America certifications.

A 2001 album of new material, "Invincible," did even worse.

In 2005, he went to trial on child-molestation charges. He was acquitted.

In July 2008, after three years away from the spotlight, Jackson announced a series of concerts at London's O2

Arena as his "curtain call." Some of the shows, initially scheduled to begin in July, were eventually postponed until

2010. Watch the reaction to Jackson's passing

    Rise to stardom

Michael Jackson was born August 29, 1958, to Joe Jackson, a Gary, Indiana, steelworker, and his wife,

Katherine. By the time he was 6, he had joined his brothers in a musical group organized by his father, and by the

time he was 10, the group -- the Jackson 5 -- had been signed to Motown. Watch Michael Jackson's life in

    video

He made his first television appearance at age 11.

Jackson, a natural performer, soon became the group's front man. Music critic Langdon Winner, reviewing the

group's first album, "Diana Ross Presents the Jackson 5," for Rolling Stone, praised Michael's versatile singing

and added, "Who is this 'Diana Ross,' anyway?"

The group's first four singles -- "I Want You Back," "ABC," "The Love You Save" and "I'll Be There" -- went to No.

1 on the Billboard pop chart, the first time any group had pulled off that feat. There was even a Jackson 5 cartoon

series on ABC. Watch reaction from Motown Studios

In 1972, he hit No. 1 as a solo artist with the song "Ben."

The group's popularity waned as the '70s continued, and Michael eventually went solo full time. He played the

Scarecrow in the 1978 movie version of "The Wiz," and released the album "Off the Wall" in 1979. Its success

paved the way for "Thriller," which eventually became the best-selling album in history, with 50 million copies sold

    worldwide.

At that point, Michael Jackson became ubiquitous.

Seven of "Thriller's" nine cuts were released as singles; all made the Top Ten. The then-new cable channel MTV,

criticized for its almost exclusively white playlist, finally started playing Jackson's videos. They aired incessantly,

including a 14-minute minimovie of the title cut. ("Weird Al" Yankovic cemented his own stardom by lampooning

Jackson's song "Beat It" with a letter-perfect parody video.)

On the Motown Records' 25th-anniversary special -- a May 1983 TV extravaganza with notable turns by the

Temptations, the Four Tops and Smokey Robinson -- it was Michael Jackson who stopped the show.

Already he was the most popular musician in America, riding high with "Thriller." But something about his

electrifying performance of "Billie Jean," complete with the patented backward dance moves, boosted his stardom

to a new level. Watch Jackson perform "Thiller"

People copied his Jheri-curled hair and single-gloved, zippered-jacket look. Showbiz veterans such as Fred

Astaire praised his chops. He posed for photos with Ronald and Nancy Reagan at the White House. Paul

McCartney teamed with him on three duets, two of which -- "The Girl Is Mine" and "Say Say Say" -- became top

five hits. Jackson became a Pepsi spokesman, and when his hair caught fire while making a commercial, it was

    worldwide news.

It all happened very fast -- within a couple years of the Motown special. But even at the time of the "Motown 25"

moonwalk, fame was old hat to Michael Jackson. He hadn't even turned 25 himself, but he'd been a star for more

than half his life. He was given the nickname the "King of Pop" -- a spin on Elvis Presley's status as "the King of

Rock 'n' Roll" -- and few questioned the moniker.

    Relentless attention

But, as the showbiz saying has it, when you're on top of the world, there's nowhere to go but down. The relentlessattention given Jackson started focusing as much on his eccentricities -- some real, some rumored -- as his

    music.

As the Web site Allmusic.com notes, he was rumored to sleep in a hyperbaric chamber and to have purchased

    the bones of John Merrick, the "Elephant Man." (Neither was true.) He did have a pet chimpanzee, Bubbles;

underwent a series of increasingly drastic plastic surgeries; established an estate, Neverland, filled with zoo

animals and amusement park rides; and managed to purchase the Beatles catalog from under Paul McCartney's

nose, which displeased the ex-Beatle immensely.

In 1990s and 2000s, Jackson found himself pasted across the media for his short-lived marriages, the first to Elvis

Presley's daughter, Lisa Marie; his 2002 claim that then Sony Records head Tommy Mottola was racist; hisbehavior and statements during a 2003 interview with British journalist Martin Bashir done for a documentary

called "Living With Michael Jackson;" his changing physical appearance; and, above all, the accusations that he

sexually molested young boys at Neverland. Watch report on legacy on Michael Jackson

The first such accusation, in 1993, resulted in a settlement to the 13-year-old accuser (rumored to be as high as

$20 million), though no criminal charges were filed, Allmusic.com notes.

He also fell deeply in debt and was forced to sell some of his assets. Neverland was one of many holdings that

went on the block. However, an auction of material from Neverland, scheduled for April, was called off and all

    items returned to Jackson.

Interest in Jackson never faded, however, even if some of it was prurient. In 2008, when he announced 10

comeback shows in London, beginning in July 2009, the story made worldwide news. The number of concerts

    was later increased to 50.

Seventy-five thousand tickets sold in four hours when they went on sale in March.

However, when the shows were postponed until 2010, rumors swept the Internet that Jackson was not physically

prepared and possibly suffering from skin cancer. Watch discussion of his tough life, brilliant career

Michael Jackson's impact on popular culture

In the immediate wake ofMichael Jackson's death, his importance in the pop-culture

pantheon is going to be hard to calculate. After all the tears have dried and the tributes have

faded into memory, we should be able to get a clearer picture of Jackson's true contribution.

Even then, though, the truth might be obscured by self-mythologizing. After all, this is a man

who, in 1995, spent US$30 million of Sony's money to ship statues of himself around Europe

in order to promote an album (the modestly titledHIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I).

    9/21

And who can forget Jackson's monumental gaffe at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards?

That year, the awards coincided with his birthday. As a tribute, Britney Spears introduced

Jackson by saying she considered him "the artist of the millennium." Jackson misunderstood

this to mean that he was being presented with a particularly auspicious honour. "When I was alittle boy growing up in Indiana, if someone told me I'd be getting the Artist of the

Millennium Award, I'd have never believed it."

A star before he reached puberty, Jackson spent most of his life in the public eye, although he

spent much of his last decade trying to avoid the scrutiny of prying media. Beyond Jackson's

ever-changing, freakish appearance; his outlandishly lavish lifestyle; his bizarre personal

relationships; his business peccadilloes; and those nagging rumours about his inappropriate

attraction to young boys, lie the facts about his career. Let's take a look at the numbers.

Not counting his group recordings with his brothers (first as the Jackson 5 and later as the

Jacksons) or collaborations with other artists (such as "Say Say Say", a chart-topping duet

with Paul McCartney), Michael racked up 32 Top-20 pop hits, with 13 of those reaching the

number-one spot. He won 13 Grammy Awards and has sold some 750 million records

worldwide. Jackson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, once as a

member of the Jackson 5 and once as a solo artist. The Guinness Book of World Records

    has

called him the most successful entertainer of all time.

In terms of record sales, Jackson ranks right behind the Beatles and Elvis Presley. (And the

perennially popularBing Crosby, too.) His success is easy to quantify; his influence, not so

much. After Presley, it's arguable that no single solo artist made more of an impact on pop

culture. Jackson's singing, songwriting style, and dancing helped shape the musical landscape

of the 1980s, and where would MTV have been without the groundbreaking videos for hits

such as "Thriller" and "Bad"? In fact, 1983's "Billie Jean" was largely responsible for bringing

down MTV's colour barrier; before it began airing that clip, the station excluded most black

artists on the basis that they didn't fit its "rock" format.

As for Jackson's legacy, that's a story that continues to be written, and will carry on with the

many artists who claim his work as a formative influence. That number includesJustin

Timberlake, Usher,Chris Brown, Akon, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears,Ne-Yo, and

Michael Joseph Jackson was born in Gary, Indiana (an industrial suburb of Chicago, Illinois) to aworking-class family on August 29, 1958. The son of Joseph Walter "Joe" Jackson and KatherineEsther (ne Scruse), he was the seventh of nine children. His siblings are Rebbie, Jackie, Tito,

Jermaine, La Toya, Marlon, Randy and Janet. Joseph Jackson was a steel mill employee who oftenperformed in an R&B band called The Falcons with his brother Luther. Jackson was raised as a

Jehovah's Witness by his devout mother. He later converted to Islam.

From a young age Jackson was physically and emotionally abused by his father, enduringincessant rehearsals, whippings and name-calling. Jackson's abuse as a child affected himthroughout his grown life. In one altercation later recalled by Marlon Jackson Joseph heldMichael upside down by one leg and "pummeled him over and over again with his hand, hittinghim on his back and buttocks". Joseph would often trip up, or push the male children into walls. One night while Jackson was asleep, Joseph climbed into his room through the bedroom window.Wearing a fright mask, he entered the room screaming and shouting. Joseph said he wanted toteach his children not to leave the window open when they went to sleep. For years afterwards,

Jackson suffered nightmares about being kidnapped from his bedroom.

Jackson first spoke openly about his childhood abuse in a 1993 interview with Oprah Winfrey. Hesaid that during his childhood he often cried from loneliness and would sometimes get sick orstart to vomit upon seeing his father. In Jackson's other high profile interview, Living with Michael

Jackson (2003), the singer covered his face with his hand and began crying when talking abouthis childhood abuse. Jackson recalled that Joseph sat in a chair with a belt in his hand as he andhis siblings rehearsed and that "if you didn't do it the right way, he would tear you up, really getyou."

Jackson showed musical talent early in his life, performing in front of classmates and othersduring a Christmas recital at the age of five. In 1964, Jackson and Marlon joined the JacksonBrothersa band formed by brothers Jackie, Tito and Jermaineas backup musicians playingcongas and tambourine, respectively. Jackson later began performing backup vocals anddancing; at the age of eight, he and Jermaine assumed lead vocals, and the group's name waschanged to The Jackson 5. The band toured the Midwest extensively from 1966 to 1968. Theband frequently performed at a string of black clubs and venues collectively known as the"chitlin' circuit", where they often opened for stripteases and other adult acts. In 1966, they wona major local talent show with renditions of Motown hits and James Brown's "I Got You (I FeelGood)", led by Michael.

The Jackson 5 recorded several songs, including "Big Boy", for the local record label Steeltown in1967 and signed with Motown Records in 1968. Rolling Stone magazine later described theyoung Michael as "a prodigy" with "overwhelming musical gifts", noting that Michael "quicklyemerged as the main draw and lead singer" after he began to dance and sing with his brothers.

Though Michael sang with a "child's piping voice, he danced like a grown-up hoofer and sangwith the R&B/gospel inflections of Sam Cooke, James Brown, Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder".

The group set a chart record when its first four singles ("I Want You Back", "ABC", "The Love YouSave" and "I'll Be There") peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. During The Jackson 5'searly years, Motown's public relations team claimed that Jackson was nine years oldtwo yearsyounger than he actually wasto make him appear cuter and more accessible to themainstream audience. Starting in 1972, Jackson released a total of four solo studio albums withMotown, among them Got to Be There and Ben. These were released as part of the Jackson 5franchise, and produced successful singles such as "Got to Be There", "Ben" and a remake ofBobby Day's "Rockin' Robin". The group's sales began declining in 1973, and the band members

chafed under Motown's strict refusal to allow them creative control or input. Although the groupscored several top 40 hits, including the top 5 disco single "Dancing Machine" and the top 20 hit"I Am Love".the Jackson 5 left Motown in 1975.(read less)

Michael Jacksonwas unquestionably the biggest pop star of the '80s, and certainly one of themost popular recording artists of all time. In his prime,

Jackson was an unstoppable juggernaut, possessed of all the tools to dominate thecharts seemingly at will: an instantly identifiable voice, eye-popping dance moves, stunning musical versatility, and loads of sheer star power. His 1982 blockbusterThriller became the biggest-selling album of all time (probably his best-knownaccomplishment), and he was the first black artist to find stardom on MTV, breaking

down innumerable boundaries both for his race and for music video as an art form. Yet asJackson's career began, very gradually, to descend from the dizzying heights of his peakyears, most of the media's attention focused on his increasingly bizarre eccentricities; he wasoften depicted as an arrested man-child, completely sheltered from adult reality by a life spentin show business. The snickering turned to scandal in 1993, when Jackson was accused of

molesting a 13-year-old boy; although he categorically denied the charges, his out-of-courtsettlement failed to restore his tarnished image. He never quite escaped the stigma of thoseallegations, and while he continued to sell records at superstar-like levels, he didn't releasethem with enough frequency (or, many critics thought, inspiration) to once again become

better known for his music than his private life. Whether as a pop icon or a tabloid caricature,Jackson always remained bigger than life.

Michael Joseph Jackson was born August 29, 1958, in Gary, IN. The fifth son of steelworkerJoe Jackson, Michaeldisplayed a talent for music and dance from an extremely young age.His childhood was strictly regimented; from the start, he was to an extent sheltered from theoutside world by his mother's Jehovah's Witness faith, and his father was by all accounts an

often ill-tempered disciplinarian.Joe began to organize a family musical group around histhree eldest sons in 1962, and Michael joined them the following year, quickly establishinghimself as a dynamic stage performer. His dead-on mastery ofJames Brown's dance movesand soulful, mature-beyond-his-years vocals made him a natural focal point, especially givenhis incredibly young age. Dubbed the Jackson 5, the group signed to Motown in 1968 andissued their debut single in October 1969, when Michael was just 11 years old. "I Want YouBack," "ABC," "The Love You Save," and "I'll Be There" all hit number one in 1970, makingthe Jackson 5 the first group in pop history to have their first four singles top the charts.Motown began priming Michael for a solo career in 1971, and his first single, "Got to BeThere," was issued toward the end of the year; it hit the Top Five, as did the follow-up, acover ofBobby Day's "Rockin' Robin." Later in 1972, Jackson had his first number one solosingle, "Ben," the title song from a children's thriller about a young boy who befriends Ben,the highly intelligent leader of a gang of homicidal rats. Given the subject matter, the songwas surprisingly sincere and sentimental, and even earned an Oscar nomination. However, themomentum ofJackson's solo career (much like that ofthe Jackson 5) soon stalled. He releasedhis fourth and final album on Motown in 1975, and the following year, he and his brothers(save Jermaine) signed to Epic and became the Jacksons.

In 1977, Jackson landed a starring role alongsideDiana Ross in the all-black film musical TheWiz, a retelling of The Wizard of Oz; here he met producer/composerQuincy Jones for thefirst time. Encouraged by the success ofthe Jacksons' self-produced, mostly self-written 1978

album Destiny, Jacksonelected to resume his solo career when his management contract withhis father expired shortly thereafter. With Jones producing, Jackson recorded his first soloalbum as an adult, Off the Wall. An immaculately crafted set of funky disco-pop, smoothsoul, and lush, sentimental pop ballads, Off the Wall made Jackson a star all over again. It

produced four Top Ten singles, including the number one hits "Don't Stop 'til You GetEnough" and "Rock With You," and went platinum (it went on to sell over seven millioncopies); even so, Jacksonremained loyal to his brothers and stayed with the group.

    No group could have containedJackson's rapidly rising star for long; however, there was stillno sign (if there ever could be) that his next album would become the biggest in history.Released in 1982, the Quincy Jones-produced Thriller refined the strengths of Off the Wall;

the dance and rock tracks were more driving, the pop tunes and ballads softer and moresoulful, and all of it was recognizably Michael. Jackson brought in Paul McCartney for a duet,

guitarist Eddie Van Halen for a jaw-dropping solo, and Vincent Price for a creepy recitation. It was no surprise that Thriller was a hit; what was a surprise was its staying power. Jackson'sduet with McCartney, "The Girl Is Mine," was a natural single choice, and it peaked atnumber two; then "Billie Jean" and the Van Halen track "Beat It" both hit number one, forseven and three weeks, respectively. Those latter two songs, as well as the future Top Five

title track, had one important feature in common: Jackson supported them with elaboratelyconceived video clips that revolutionized the way music videos were made. Jackson treatedthem as song-length movies with structured narratives: "Billie Jean" set the song's tale of a

paternity suit in a nightmarish dream world where Jackson was a solitary, sometimes invisiblepresence; the anti-gang-violence "Beat It" became an homage to West Side Story; and the ten-minute-plus clip for "Thriller" (routinely selected as the best video of all time) featuredJackson leading a dance troupe of rotting zombies, with loads of horror-film makeup andeffects. Having never really accepted black artists in the past, MTV played the clips to death, garnering massive publicity forJacksonand droves of viewers for the fledgling cablenetwork. Jacksonsealed his own phenomenon by debuting his signature "moonwalk" dancestep on May 16, 1983, on Motown's televised 25th anniversary special; though he didn't

invent the moonwalk (as he himself was quick to point out), it became as much of aJacksonsignature as his vocal hiccups or single white-sequined glove.

Showing no signs of slowing down, Thriller just kept spinning off singles, including "WannaBe Startin' Somethin'," the airy ballad "Human Nature," and "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)";in all, seven of its nine tracks wound up in the Top Ten, obliterating conventional ideas ofhow many singles could be released from an album before it ran its course. Thriller stayed onthe charts for over two years, spent 37 non-consecutive weeks at number one, and became the

best-selling album of all time; it went on to sell 25 million copies in the U.S. alone, andaround another 20 million overseas. Naturally,Jackson won a slew of awards, including arecord eight Grammys in one night, and snagged the largest endorsement deal ever when he

became a spokesman for Pepsi (he would later be burned in an accident while filming acommercial). At the end of 1983,Jackson was again on top of the singles charts, this time as

part of a second duet with McCartney, "Say Say Say." In 1984, Jackson rejoined his brothersone last time for the album Victory, whose supporting tour was one of the biggest (and

priciest) of the year. The following year, he and Lionel Richie co-wrote the anthemic "WeAre the World" for the all-star famine-relief effortUSA for Africa; it became one of thefastest-selling singles ever.

Even at this early stage, wild rumors about Jackson's private life were swirling. His shynessand reluctance to grant interviews (ironically, due in part to his concerns about being

misrepresented) only encouraged more speculation. Some pointed to his soft-spoken, stillgirlish voice as evidence that he'd undergone hormone treatments to preserve the high, flexible range of his youth; stories were told about Jackson sleeping in a hyperbaric chamberto slow the aging process, and purchasing the skeleton of John Merrick, the Elephant Man(Jackson did view the bones in the London Hospital, but did not buy them). Jacksonbought alarge ranch in California which he dubbed Neverland, and filled it with amusement park ridesand animals (including the notorious pet chimpanzee Bubbles), which only fueled the public's

perception of him as a somewhat bizarre eccentric obsessed with recapturing his childhood. He also underwent cosmetic surgery several times, which led to accusations from the blackcommunity that his gradually lightening skin tone was the result of an intentional effort to

become whiter; a few years later, Jackson revealed that he had a disorder called vitiligo, in

which pigment disappears from the skin, leaving large white blotches and making directsunlight dangerous. One of the rumors that was definitely true was thatJackson owned the

rights tothe Beatles' catalog; in 1985, he acquired ATV Publishing, the firm that controlledall theLennon-McCartneycopyrights (among others), which wound up costing him hisfriendship with McCartney.

During his long layoff between records, Jacksonindulged his interest in film and video by

working with George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola on the 3-D short film Captain Eo. Thespecial-effects extravaganza was shown at the enormous widescreen IMAX theaters inDisney's amusement parks for 12 years, beginning in 1986. Finally, Jackson re-entered thestudio withQuincy Jones to begin the near-impossible task of crafting a follow-up to Thriller.Bad was released to enormous public anticipation in 1987, and was accompanied by equallyenormous publicity. It debuted at number one, and the first single, "I Just Can't Stop LovingYou," with vocal accompaniment by Siedah Garrett, also shot up the charts to number one.Like Thriller, Bad continued to spin off singles for well over a year after its release, and

became the first album ever to produce five number one hits; the others were "Bad," "TheWay You Make Me Feel," "Man in the Mirror," and "Dirty Diana." Jackson supported thealbum with a lengthy world tour that featured a typically spectacular, elaborate stage show; it

became the highest-grossing tour of all time. AlthoughJackson's success was still staggering, there were faint undercurrents of disappointment, partly because of the unparalleled

phenomenon of Thriller (Bad "only" sold eight million copies), and partly because the albumitself didn't seem quite as exuberant or uniformly consistent when compared to its

    predecessors.

Jackson took another long hiatus between albums, giving the media little to focus on besideshis numerous eccentricities; by this time, the British tabloids delighted in calling him "WackoJacko," a name he detested. When Jackson returned in with a new album in late 1991, he'dcome up with a different moniker: "the King of Pop." Dangerous found Jacksonending hiscollaboration withQuincy Jones in an effort to update his sound; accordingly, many of thetracks were helmed by the groundbreaking new jack swing producerTeddy Riley. Asexpected, the album debuted at number one, and its lead single, "Black or White," shot to thetop as well. Jackson courted controversy with the song's video, however; after the song itselfended, there was a long dance sequence in whichJackson shouted, grabbed his crotch, andsmashed car windows in a bizarre display that seemed at odds with the song's harmoniousmessage. With the video given a high-profile, prime-time network premiere,Jackson wascriticized for the inappropriate violence and the message it might send to his younger fans. However, Jackson would not be the biggest story in popular music for long. In early 1992,

Nirvana's Nevermind symbolically knocked Dangerous out of the number one spot; after thealternative rock revolution, the pop charts would never be quite the same. Jackson scored

several more hits off the album, including the Top Tens "Remember the Time" and "In theCloset," but the aggressive "Jam" and the saccharine "Heal the World" both performeddisappointingly.

Jackson had long preferred the company of children over other adults, and befriended quite afew, inviting them to stay at his Neverland Ranch and enjoy the massive playground he'dassembled over the years. In 1993, Jacksonwas accused of molesting a 13-year-old boy who'd

become a frequent guest at Neverland. Predictably, there was a tabloid feeding frenzy, and amainstream media circus as well. In the court of public opinion, the charges seemed all too

plausible:Jackson was near-universally perceived as a weirdo, and here was a handyexplanation for his heretofore asexual persona and distaste for adult companions.

Additionally,Jackson entered rehab for a short time, seeking treatment for an addiction topain killers. Investigations were unsuccessful in turning up any other boys who echoed the

    allegations, and Jacksoncountersued his accusers for attempting extortion; however, in spiteof the fact that no criminal charges were ever filed against Jackson, he settled the boy'sfamily's suit out of court in early 1995, paying an estimated 18 to 20 million dollars. Manyfelt the settlement was tantamount to an admission of guilt, and when Jackson married LisaMarie Presley in 1994, the move was perceived as a desperate ploy to rehabilitate his image;

the marriage broke up just 19 months later, seemingly lending credence to the charge.

In 1995, Jackson attempted to put the focus back on his music by preparing HIStory: Past,Present and Future, Book 1, a two-CD set featuring one disc of new material and one of hisgreatest hits. The album debuted at number one, but the format backfired on Jackson: his fansalready owned the hits, and the new album simply wasn't strong enough to offset the addedcost of the extra disc for many more casual listeners. There were some encouraging signs --the lead single "Scream," a duet with sisterJanet, debuted at number five, setting a newAmerican chart record that was broken when the follow-up, "You Are Not Alone," becamethe first single ever to enter the Billboard Hot 100 at number one. But on the whole, HIStorywas something of a disappointment. Additionally,Jackson collapsed during rehearsals for an

awards show later that year, and had to be rushed to the hospital; what was more, the Eagles'Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) was threatening to catch Thriller's American sales record (iteventually did, and the two continued to run neck and neck). There were signs thatJacksonwas grasping at his self-proclaimed King of Pop status; the cover of HIStory depicted anenormous statue ofJackson, and he performed at the 1996 BRIT Awards dressed as aMessiah, with children and a rabbi surrounding him worshipfully (Pulp lead singerJarvisCockerstormed the stage to protestJackson's hubris during the middle of the song). The 1997remix album Blood on the Dance Floor failed to even go platinum, although remix albumshistorically don't perform nearly as well as new material.

In late 1996, Jacksonremarried, to nurse Debbie Rowe; over the next two years, the couplehad two children, son Prince Michael Jackson, Jr. and daughter Paris Michael KatherineJackson. However, Jackson and Rowe divorced in late 1999. In 2001, Jackson was inductedinto the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and later held a massive concert at Madison SquareGarden celebrating the 30th anniversary of his first solo record. Among many other celebrityguests, the show featured the first on-stage reunion ofthe Jacksons since the Victory tour. Inthe wake of September 11, Jacksonput together an all-star charity benefit single, "What MoreCan I Give." His new album, Invincible, was released late in the year, marking the first timehe'd issued a collection of entirely new material since Dangerous; it found him workingheavily with urban soul production wizardRodney Jerkins. Invincible debuted at number oneand quickly went double platinum; however, its initial singles, "You Rock My World" and

"Butterflies," had rather disappointing showings on the charts, with the latter not evenreaching the Top Ten. To compound matters, the expensive "What More Can I Give" singleand video were canceled by Sony when executive producer Marc Schaffel was revealed towork in pornography. Jackson's camp tried to distance the singer from Schaffel, and thevarious corporations that were attached to it (McDonalds, Sony) claimed they had minimalinvolvement if any with the song. Sony and Jacksonbegan a press war in the summer of2002, starting with Jackson's claims that the label asked for 200 million dollars to pay them

back for marketing costs. Although they had spent 55 million on his disappointing comeback,Sony released a statement saying that no such request had ever been made. Jackson stewed fora few weeks before launching a press attack on Sony Music chairman Tommy Mottola, calling him "devilish" and making claims that he used racist language and held down black

artists. Many Sony artists, including Mariah Carey and Ricky Martin, defended Mottola, butJackson and his family maintained that racism ended their professional relationship.

From that point,Jackson's career took an extreme turn toward the bizarre, starting with MTV'sannual Video Awards. When Britney Spearspresented him with a birthday cake, an offhandremark about being the artist of the millennium inspired a rambling Jackson to accept ameaningless trophy (which everyone presenting on-stage received) as an actual Artist of theMillennium award. Next came accusations from a promotional company over his promises of

a tour and several appearances that he then canceled.Jackson arrived in court late, gave adrowsy testimony, and inspired gasps when he removed a surgical mask to reveal his nose hadcaved in from a botched cosmetic surgery. Only days later, German fans were horrified whenJackson came to the balcony of his hotel suite and briefly dangled his 11-month old babyPrince Michael II (nicknamed "Blanket" byJackson) over the edge with one arm. Although heapologized the next day, claiming he had gotten caught up in the moment, this only did moreto cement the King of Pop's public image as an out of control millionaire. The year 2003turned out not to be a good one forJackson, as in November his Neverland Ranch wasextensively searched by police, whereby he was subsequently arrested on charges of childmolestation. That same month the single disc retrospective Number Ones hit the stands withone new song, "One More Chance". A year later -- nearly to the day -- the four-CD/one-DVD

box set The Ultimate Collection appeared with numerous rarities including the original demofor "We Are the World." In January 2005 his child molestation trial began and by May he wasacquitted on all counts. Jacksonsoon relocated to the Persian Gulf island of Bahrain and

began working on new music including a charity single that would benefit victims ofHurricane Katrina. The single never appeared, but the two-disc The Essential MichaelJackson did and in 2006 the strange box set Visionary was released, featuring 20 DualDiscsreplicating 20 big hit singles with their videos included on the DVD side. In early 2007 it wasannounced that a comeback album was planned for late in the year; the album nevermaterialized.

On the afternoon of June 25, 2009, while in the middle of rehearsing for a series of 50concerts, Jackson collapsed. He was rushed to the UCLA Medical Center, where he was

pronounced dead at the age of 50. His death was later ruled a homicide, the result of ingestinga lethal amount of prescription drugs. Unsurprisingly, a slew of releases ensued -- planned

prior to and afterJackson's death -- including Motown's Michael Jackson: The Remix Suiteand a soundtrack for This Is It, the film based onJackson's rehearsals for the comebackconcerts. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide
