A typical gasoline is a mixture of paraffins
(Alkanes), Naphthenes (cycloalkanes), and
olefins (alkenes). Many countries set limits
on gasoline aromatics and olefins.

4 - 12 Straight Run Gasoline: Distiled Directly for crude oil.
Catalytic Cracked Gasoline / Naphtha
HydroCracking
Alkylation: The addition of isobutane to alkenes giving
branched chains but low aromatics
Isomerate: Isomerizing low octance straight run gasoline to
iso-parafins8 - 21 Fractional distillation of crude oil
Synthesis Gas followed by Fischer-Tropsch

5 - 12 Fractional distillation of crude oil
3
By-product of natural gas processing: Removal of butane,
propane and large amount of ethane from raw gas.
Petroleum refining: By product of cracking petroleum into
gasoline or heating oil

Produced both as a petrochemical, throught the hydration
of ethylene. Acid Catalysed Hydration
Vast Majority produced by Fermentation for use in
alcoholic beverages and as fuel.

Demand Conversion rate
Primarily as a fuel in internal combustion engines Euro to USD 1.32
Gasoline 380
Diesel 302.1
Kerosene 327.15
Heating and lighting: Less developed Countries. Cooking
in Nigeria Propane 521
Fuel for jet engines
Feedstock for producing high octane gasoline. Ethanol 331
Bitumen mining industry as a diluent
Producing olefins in steam crackers
Solvent Applications
Alternative to gasoline: liquid state at a moderate
pressure (LPG). Third most popular vehicle fuel in
America
Cooking Gas / Portable Heating
Producing biodiesel via transesterification
40% of methanol is converted to formaldehyde which
are then made into products as diverse as plastics,
plywood, paints, explosives, and permanent press
textiles.
In the early 1970s, a methanol to gasoline process was
developed by Mobil for producing gasoline ready for use
in vehicles. To produce MTBE: gasoline additve.
The market became tight because of the ethane prices
falling in the USA, due to the exploration of shale gas
reserves. The low price ethylene produced from this rawmaterial has given chemical producers in North America
a feedstock advantage.
Such change put naphtha-fed stream crackers at a
disadvantageous position, with many of them shutting
down or revamping to use ethane as feedstock.

The largest single use of ethanol is as a motor fuel and
fuel additive. Brazil relies on ethanol as a motor fuel.
From Sugar Cane. Gasoline sold in Brazil contains at least
25% anhydrous ethanol.
An important industrial ingredient and has widespread
use a base chemical for other organic compounds. These
include ethyl halides, ethyl esters, diethyl ether, acetic
acid etc
Feed stock for methlating agent, dimethyl sulfate
Promising fuel in diesel engines. Only moderate
modification are needed to convert a diesel enginer to
burn DME
