Orientation
This issue differs from issue 4 in that: Smaller corrections have been made.
This standard is an extract from ISO 2553:1992.
This standard gives rules for how welds should be indicated on drawing.
Contents
1. General
2. The structure of symbolic representation of welds
3. Dimensioning of welds
4. Examples
1. General
In its simplest form the weld designation indicates:
the shape of the joint on which the weld is to be applied
from which side the weld is to be applied
that the weld should have complete penetration
By means of additional symbols, measurement indications and supplementary designations the welddesignation may determine:
the form of the weld surface
the size of the cross-section of the weld
penetration depth
limited weld length
welding class
welding process

2. The structure of symbolic representation of welds
The symbolic representation of weld always includes:
Arrow line (see clause 2.1)
Reference line (see clause 2.2)
Elementary symbol (see clause 2.3)
The thickness of lines for arrow line, reference line, symbol and lettering shall be in accordance with
the thickness of line for dimensioning according to Drawing Standard (DS 206.10).

2.1 Arrow line
The position in relation to the weld is generally of no special significance. However when only one
part of the weld joint in a butt weld according to No. 4, 6 and 8 (table 1) is prepared, the arrow line
shall point towards the prepared part. See figure 3.
Prepared weld joint Symbolization in view Symbolization in section
Figure 3
The arrow line
joins one end of the continuous line of the reference line. The arrow line and the reference lineshall form an angle with each other. See figure 1
ends with an arrow-head.
2.2 Reference line
The reference line consists of two parallel lines, one continuous and one dashed. See figure 1.
The continuous line represent the arrow side of the weld.
The dashed line represents the other side of the weld and is drawn either beneath or above the con-
tinuous line. On one and the same drawing only one way shall be used. For symmetrical welds the
dashed line is omitted.
If possible the reference line shall be drawn parallel to the bottom edge of the drawing.
Figure 4 explains the meaning of the terms:
Arrow side of the weld.
Other side of the weld.

The symbol can be placed either above or beneath the reference line.
When the symbol is placed on the continuous line, the weld face is on the arrow side of the joint. See

2.3 Elementary symbols
The weld is characterized by an elementary symbol which, is general, is similar to the shape of the
joint preparation. Combinations of elementary symbols can be used.
The elementary symbols are shown in table 1.
The elementary symbol shall not be taken to prejudge the process to be employed.
Examples of use:
Elementary symbols, see table 5.
Combinations of elementary symbols, see table 6.

2.4 Supplementary symbols and complementary indications
The elementary symbol may be completed by supplementary symbols, characterizing the shape of
the external surface of the weld (see table 2 and figure 8).
The absence of a supplementary symbol means that no particular shape of the external surface of the
weld is required. It may thus be either flat, convex or concave.
Complementary indications may be necessary in order to specify some other characteristics. If a
welding process (B 2310.16) or a welding class (B 2310.63or B 2310.64) is indicated the continu-
ous reference line is completed by two inclined lines, which form a 90 angle with each other. (See
table 3 and figure 8).

3. Dimensioning of welds
The symbolic may include a certain number of dimensions. The rules for setting down the dimen-
sions are given in table 4.
Dimensions relative to the cross-section are written on the left-hand side of the elementary symbol.
Other dimensions are written on the right-hand side of the symbol.
A butt weld without any indication to the left of the elementary symbol shall have full penetration.
The absence of any indication to the right of the elementary symbol signifies that the weld shall be
continuous over the whole length of the workpiece.
For fillet welds there are two methods to indicate crosssection dimensions:
Throat thickness (a)The letter ashall always be placed in front of the value of the dimension. See figure 9.
Leg length (z)z a 2=
The letter zshall always be placed in front of the value of the dimension. See figure 9.
Normally throat thickness (a) should be used in Tetra Pak.
Figure 9
In the case of plug or slot weld with bevelled edges, the dimension at the bottom of the holes shall beindicated.
The location of the weld in relation to the edge of the work piece is indicated according to general
recommendations for technical drawings. In the absence of a dimension the weld starts at the edge
of the work piece
