Level 1Welding and FabricationTwo GCSEs at grade D or above (may include one relevant equivalent) to include Maths/Numeracy.

Level 2Welding and FabricationEntry is normally subject to completion of the Level 1 programme and a successful decision at Progression Board.

Level 2 / 3Enhanced Engineering (Welding and Fabrication)Five GCSEs at grade C or above (may include one relevant equivalent) to include Mathematics, Numeracy (both from Intermediate/Higher tier), English Language/First Language Welsh and Science.

Level 3Engineering Construction (Welding or Fabrication)Successful completion of the Level 2 programme and a successful decision at Progression Board.

BackgroundThe Engineering Construction industry is critical to the country’s economy and over the next ten years it is estimated that around 60,000 new jobs will be created.

The industry provides a wide range of exciting, varied and rewarding career opportunities for skilled individuals.

FacilitiesThe MITEC Centre is fully equipped to undertake a wide range of welding and fabrication services. Classroom facilities include; computer suites, interactive white boards, technical drawing equipment and a virtual welding set. The College is proud of its cutting edge facilities which enhance the learning experience.

Practical workshops include: -

Welding: MMA, TIG and MIG/MAGFabrication: Free-standing machinery, Power-tools and Hand-tools

Trips/VisitsAnnual trip available to the WorldSkills UK Competitions held at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham.

A range of work experience primarily available via the enhanced engineering program provided by local employers.

CompetitionsWe encourage learners to take part in skills competitions to build both their confidence and their skills. Competitions include:

- Level 2 Skills Competition Wales in Welding or Construction Metalwork.- Level 3 WorldSkills UK Competition in Welding or Construction Metalwork.

Former learners have progressed into a broad range of apprenticeships and into employment. Here are a few examples:

Apprenticeships:The MITEC Centre has a high success rate of getting Level 3 learners into apprenticeships across Pembrokeshire and further afield.

Employment:Through engagement with local employers, past students have progressed their careers into a variety of professions within the Engineering Construction industry across a range of sectors such as oil and gas, nuclear, teaching, manufacturing and renewable energy.

Professions have included:

• Welding • Plating• Pipefitting• Weld Inspection• Quality Assurance and • Health and Safety.

Research your chosen subject to enhance you understanding of basic welding and fabrication principles.

Make sure you have a ‘can do’ attitude. You need to be prepared to work hard and to arrive ready for your sessions.

Levels ExplainedEntry Level and Level 1Our Level 1 and Entry Level courses are suitable for you have few of no formal qualifications. If you don’t get the GCSE grades you had hoped for, then you can start at Entry Level and work your way up.

Level 2Most of our Level 2 courses require you to have GCSE grades at D and some even require you to have achieved C grades in certain subjects. Entry requirements for each course vary so please check the website before applying.

Level 3If you have five GCSEs at grade C or above (some courses may require you to have achieved B grades in certain subjects) you can go straight in at Level 3 (equivalent to studying A-levels).

How to Apply1. Visit our website, select your course and apply online

You’ll need to create and account and this will be used to update you on the progress of your application. If you need any help with your application, please contact our Admissions team: [email protected]

2. InterviewOnce we have received your application we would normally invite you into the College for an interview. Given the current circumstances, you may be invited to a virtual interview instead.

3. OfferIf we are happy with your application and interview we will make you a conditional offer. Your place will be subject to you obtaining the necessary GCSE grades.

4. UpdatesWe’ll send you periodic emails between now and September to let you know we haven’t forgotten about you!

5. EnrolmentYou’ll be invited to an enrolment day in August where we will check your grades and enrol you on your course. If you don’t get your grades, don’t panic, our Advice and Guidance team will work with you to find a suitable alternative.
