1). COKING COAL: These coals, when heated in the absence of air, formcoherent beads, free from volatiles, with strong and porous mass, calledcoke.

Characteristics & Uses: These have coking properties

Mainly used in steel making and metallurgical industries

Also used for hard coke manufacturing

2). SEMI COKING COAL: These coals, when heated in the absence of air,form coherent beads not strong enough to be directly fed into the blastfurnace. Such coals are blended with coking coal in adequate proportionto make coke.

• Characteristics & Uses: These have comparatively less coking properties than coking coal

Mainly used as blendable coal in steel making, merchant cokemanufacturing and other metallurgical industries

3). NLW (Non-Linked Washery) COKING COAL:

This coal is not used in metallurgical industries. Because of higher ashcontent, this coal is not acceptable for washing in washeries.

•Used for power utilities and non-core sector consumers.

4). NON-COKING COAL:

These are coals without coking properties.

Mainly used as thermal grade coal for power generationAlso used for cement, fertilizer, glass, ceramic, paper, chemical and brick manufacturing, and for other heating purposes


5). WASHED AND BENEFICIATED COAL:

These coals have undergone the process of coal washing or coal beneficiation,

resulting in value addition of coal due to reduction in ash percentage.

• Used in manufacturing of hard coke for steel making

• Beneficiated and washed non-coking coal is used mainly for power generation

• Beneficiated non-coking coal is used by cement, sponge iron and other industrial plants

6. MIDDLINGS: Middlings are by-products of the three stage coal washingbeneficiation process, as a fraction of feed raw coal.

•Used for power generation, domestic fuel plants, brick manufacturing

units, cement plants, industrial plants, etc.


7). REJECTS:

Rejects are the products of coal beneficiation process after separationof cleans and / or middlings, as a fraction of feed raw coal.

• Used for Fluidized Bed Combustion (FBC) Boilers for power generation, road repairs, briquette (domestic fuel) making, land filling, etc.

8). CIL COKE / LTC COKE:

CIL Coke / LTC Coke is a smokeless, environment friendly product ofthe Dankuni Coal Complex, obtained through low temperaturecarbonization.

• Used in furnaces and kilns of industrial units• Also used as domestic fuel by halwais, hotels, etc.


9).COAL FINES / COKE FINES:

These are the screened fractions of feed raw coal and LTC coke / CILCoke respectively, obtained from the Dankuni Coal Complex and othercoke oven plants.

Used in industrial furnaces as well as for domestic purposes

10). TAR / HEAVY OIL / LIGHT OIL / SOFT PITCH:

These are products from Dankuni Coal Complex using lowtemperature carbonization of non-coking coal in vertical retorts.

• Used in furnaces and boilers of industrial plants as well as power houses, oil, dye, pharmaceutical industries, etc

BORD & PILLAR METHOD28

•Bord & Pillar is the traditional mining method used in India. It is employed

where geo-mining conditions are complex.

•Coal deposits are mined by cutting a network of „roads‟ into the coal seam

and leaving behind „pillars‟ of coal to support the roof of the mine.

•Thereafter, the pillars are extracted by de-pillaring (retreating mining).

The roof is then allowed to collapse and the mine is abandoned.

•Initially only 30% of the coal can be extracted, while most of the

remaining coal is extracted during de-pillaring.

•Smaller deposits can have Manual loading & intermediate technologies

(Continuous Miners or LHDs & SDLs).

•Mechanisation in Bord and pillar has limitations of gradients.

Semi-Mechanised Method:

Currently, most of CIL mines using Bord & Pillarremove coal from the face by blasting & deploy SDL orLHD for loading and transportation of coal from theactive mining areas.

Coal transportation to surface is either by a series ofbelt conveyors or rope haulage drawn coal tubs.

This method requires less capital investment but ismore labour intensive.


Continuous Mining Method:

In many of CIL new underground mines, bord &pillar mining is carried out using Continuous Minermethod where geo-mining conditions permit.

The coal is mined by a continuous miner unit &loaded to shuttle cars which deliver coal to feederbreaker linked with belt conveyor for onwardtransportation to surface


SUITABILITY OF BORD & PILLAR METHOD

Seam thickness should be > 1.5m

Seam should be free from stone or dirt bands.

Seam should be at moderate depth.

Seam should be with strong roof & Floor.

Seams should not be gassy.

Coal should be of adequate crushing strength.

Longwall Mining Method:33

Longwall is a fully mechanised underground mining methodwhere the roof at the coal face is supported by self-advancingpowered supports & the coal is mined by a shearer.

Armoured face conveyor & stage loader-crusher are used fortransportation of coal at the Longwall face.

A series of belt conveyors is used to transport coal to thesurface.

When the mining of a Longwall panel has been completed,the equipment is moved to a new Longwall face.

The key characteristics of Longwall Mining include highproductivity, high recovery rate and safety & reliability.

It combines the main features of both Longwall &Bord & Pillar methods.

It is a variant of Longwall Mining in which the lengthof face is much smaller than Longwall.

The Shortwall Mining was developed to employ theusual Bord & Pillar equipment but with geometricsimplicity & the advantages of self advancinghydraulic roof support.

Support design enables continuous miner & shuttlecar to extract a coal block.

This method is very popular in Australia & US.

Shortwall mining is used in Balrampur mine of SECL.
