Welcome to Personal Progress You are a beloved daughter of Heavenly Father, prepared to come to the earth at this particular time for a sacred and glorious purpose. You have a noble responsibility to use your strength and influence for good. Your loving Heavenly Father has blessed you with talents and abilities that will help you fulfill your divine mission. As you learn to accept and act upon the Young Women values in your life, you will form personal habits of prayer, scripture study, obedience to the commandments, and service to others. These daily personal habits will strengthen your faith in and testimony of Jesus Christ. They will also allow you to recognize and develop your unique gifts.

Always use your influence to lift and bless your family, other young women, and the young men with whom you associate. Honor womanhood, support the priesthood, and cherish faithful motherhood and fatherhood.

As you participate in Personal Progress, you join with thousands of other young women who are striving to come unto Christ and “stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places” (Mosiah 18:9). Counsel with your parents, and prayerfully choose goals that will help you cultivate feminine attributes, strengthen your testimony, and reach your divine potential. Take advantage of your time in Young Women by preparing to receive the sacred ordinances of the temple, to become a faithful wife and mother, and to strengthen your home and family.

Young Women Motto and Logo Young Women Motto and Logo  The Young Women motto is “stand for truth and righteousness.” The Young Women logo is a torch surrounded by the Young Women motto. The torch represents the light of Christ, inviting all to “come unto Christ” (Moroni 10:32). It invites all young women to make a commitment to hold up their light by being an example and remaining worthy to make and keep sacred covenants and receive the ordinances of the temple. “Arise and shine forth, that thy light may be a standard for the nations” (D&C 115:5).

Young Women Classes and Symbols

Beehive, ages 12 and 13The beehive was a symbol of harmony, cooperation, and work for the early pioneers of the Church. Beehive was also the first name by which young women were known. Beehives today learn to work together in cooperation and harmony as they strengthen their faith in Jesus Christ and prepare to stand for truth and righteousness. This is a time to “arise and shine forth” (D&C 115:5).

Mia Maid, ages 14 and 15The name Mia Maid refers historically to the Mutual Improvement Association, which adopted the emblem of the rose as a symbol of love, faith, and purity. Mia Maids today learn about love, faith, and purity as they strengthen their testimony and accept and act upon the Young Women values.

Laurel, ages 16 and 17For centuries the laurel wreath has been a crown woven from the leaves of the laurel tree. It is given to someone who finishes a significant achievement as a symbol of honor and accomplishment. Laurels today are finishing their preparation to make and keep sacred covenants and receive the ordinances of the temple.

Young Women Theme We are daughters of our Heavenly Father, who loves us, and we love Him. We will “stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places” (Mosiah 18:9) as we strive to live the Young Women values, which are:

Faith • Divine Nature • Individual Worth • Knowledge • Choice and Accountability • Good Works • Integrity • and Virtue

We believe as we come to accept and act upon these values, we will be prepared to strengthen home and family, make and keep sacred covenants, receive the ordinances of the temple, and enjoy the blessings of exaltation.

Hope-Tithing“The Lord has commanded us to pay tithing”

#7

When we obey the law of paying tithing we are blessed. Read:

What is Tithing? The law of tithing is simple: we pay one-tenth of our income to the Lord.

Tithing money is used to build temples and church buildings. It is also used for other things like hymn books and chairs, electricity, and activities.

If we will trust in the Lord, He will open the windows of heaven to us as we give back to Him the one-tenth He asks of us. His promise is sure: “I will… pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” (Malachi 3:10)

nourish, care for, and strengthen your faith. • Visit a church history location and create a scrapbook based on the trip, highlighting the faith of church members of that time

period, and the testimony you gained from that visit. • Write a story, play, song, or poem about your faith in Jesus Christ and share it with friends and family. • Write and illustrate a children’s story about faith, and read it to a primary class. • Write letters to missionaries, asking them about their experiences sharing the gospel and how their faith has been strengthened.

“The Family: A Proclamation to the World” 2 Peter 1 Alma 7:23-24 Doctrine & Covenants 121:45

What are some of the divine qualities of a daughter of God?

To be a daughter of God means that you are the offspring of Deity, literal descendants of a Divine Father, inheriting godly attributes and potential. To be a daughter of God also means that you have been born again, changed from a “carnal and fallen state, to a state of righteousness.”

~James E. Faust, Oct 1999 “What It Means to Be a Daughter of God”

Doctrine & Covenants 20:77,79

During the sacrament, listen carefully to the prayers and think about what it means to take upon yourself the name of Jesus Christ and how doing this should affect your actions and decisions.

Week 1

O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this bread to the souls of all those who partake of it, that they may eat in remembrance of the body of thy Son, and witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son, and always remember him and keep his commandments which he has given them; that they may always have his Spirit to be with them. Amen.

#6

Develop your divine qualities. Read the following scriptures below, choose a favorite verse or phrase: highlight it and memorize it. Underline the divine qualities listed in these passages.

Matthew 5:9…Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. John 15:12…This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Galatians 5:22-23… But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. Colossians 3:12-17… Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. 1 John 4:21… And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also. Moroni 7:44-48… If so, his faith and hope is vain, for none is acceptable before God, save the meek and lowly in heart; and if a man be meek and lowly in heart, and confesses by the power of the Holy Ghost that Jesus is the Christ, he must needs have charity; for if he have not charity he is nothing; wherefore he must needs have charity. And charity suffereth long, and is kind, and envieth not, and is not puffed up, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, and rejoiceth not in iniquity but rejoiceth in the truth, beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Wherefore, my beloved brethren, if ye have not charity, ye are nothing, for charity never faileth. Wherefore, cleave unto charity, which is the greatest of all, for all things must fail—But charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever; and whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him.Wherefore, my beloved brethren, pray unto the Father with all the energy of heart, that ye may be filled with this love, which he hath bestowed upon all who are true followers of his Son, Jesus Christ; that ye may become the sons of God; that when he shall appear we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is; that we may have this hope; that we may be purified even as he is pure. Amen.

I memorized my favorite verse and recited it. ___________________________parent or leader signature

7 And it came to pass after many days there were a goodly number gathered together at the place of Mormon, to hear the words of Alma. Yea, all were gathered together that believed on his word, to hear him. And he did teach them, and did preach unto them repentance, and redemption, and faith on the Lord.  8 And it came to pass that he said unto them: Behold, here are the waters of Mormon (for thus were they called) and now, as ye are desirous to come into the fold of God, and to be called his people, and are willing to bear one another’s burdens, that they may be light;  9 Yea, and are willing to mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort, and to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places that ye may be in, even until death, that ye may be redeemed of God, and be numbered with those of the first resurrection, that ye may have eternal life—  10 Now I say unto you, if this be the desire of your hearts, what have you against being baptized in the name of the Lord, as a witness before him that ye have entered into a covenant with him, that ye will serve him and keep his commandments, that he may pour out his Spirit more abundantly upon you?

List three ways you can comfort others or help them bear their burdens. Do the things on your list.

“Teach your family ways to serve”#4

Teach a lesson about service in family home evening or in another setting. Use some or all of the following in your lesson:

Shine-Teach

Family Home Evening Lesson on Service Idea

FHE Theme: Service Scriptures: Mosiah 2:17, D&C 24:7, Revelations 2:19 Songs: “Give Said the Little Stream” and “Happy Helper” in the Children’s Songbook lesson: Start off the lesson by putting together a puzzle as a family.  Don’t pick a puzzle that is going to take a long time, but something your family can put together fairly quickly.  And before you start the puzzle, take out a couple of the pieces and put them in your pocket – don’t let anyone see you do this! While you’re putting the puzzle together, watch this short 5 minutes video from the Mormon Channel at this link:

Ask your family how they think a puzzle and service are related.  Then explain how a community consists of many people and many families, and just like it takes all the pieces to complete a puzzle, it takes all members of a community to make it a good place to live. Get out the puzzle pieces you have in your pocket.  Tell your family that these pieces represent them.  While you can still see most of the picture without all the pieces, it’s not until you get the entire puzzle completed that everything looks just right.  The same analogy can be applied to families, your ward, or the entire community – if we aren’t doing something to help those around us, then our environment is never going to be it’s very best. Read the scriptures listed at the beginning of this lesson.  Discuss as a family which each scripture means.  Ask questions like: • How is serving a neighbor like serving the Lord? • What does it mean to have strength if you devote yourself to service? • How does the last become more than the first when we give our time, money, and energy to service? • etc. Finish the lesson by planning a family service project.  It can be something as simple as planting a few flowers in a neighbor’s yard or cleaning up a graffiti-ed street sign, or you can enlist the help of other friends and church members to accomplish a big project like the video showed.  The service project you plan should be on a scale that you know you can accomplish, because if you really want your family to understand the importance of service you’re going to need to follow through!

Courage-Fasting“Living the law of the fast”

#6

Living the law of the fast is an opportunity to practice integrity. Fasting means to go without food or drink.

I contributed to my families fast offerings

See: Gospel Principles Chapter 25:Fasting for more information

1. Generally, what day is set apart for fasting?

2. How many consecutive meals do you go without?

3. How does our attitude influence our experience when we fast?

4. In what ways has fasting taught and blessed you?

5. Why do we contribute fast offerings?

My fasting purpose is… ______________________________________You might fast for a sick friend, to overcome a bad habit, to obtain a special blessing

for yourself or someone else, or to give thanks.

I opened my fast with a prayer.

Fasting Since the time of Adam, God’s people have fasted to help them draw near to Him and to worship Him. Jesus showed the importance of fasting by His own example (see Luke 4:1–4). Through latter-day revelation we learn that the Lord still expects His people to fast and pray often (see D&C 88:76). Fasting means to go without food and drink. Occasional fasting is good for our bodies and helps our minds become more active. The Savior taught us that purposeful fasting is more than just going without food and drink. We must also concentrate on spiritual matters. We Should Pray When We Fast Prayer is a necessary part of fasting. Throughout the scriptures, prayer and fasting are mentioned together.

I closed my fast with a prayer.

We Should Fast with a Purpose Fasting can have many purposes. We can overcome weaknesses or problems by fasting and praying. Sometimes we may wish to fast and pray for help or guidance for others, such as a family member who is ill and needs a blessing (see Mosiah 27:22–23). Our purpose in fasting should not be to impress others. The Lord counseled: “Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Fast offerings When we fast each month, the Lord asks us to help those in need. One way we do this is by giving through the proper priesthood authority the money we would have spent on food for the two meals. We should give as generously as we are able. Through our

fast offerings we become partners with the Lord in administering to the needs of our less-fortunate brothers and sisters. Fasting Teaches Self-Control Fasting helps us gain strength of character. When we fast properly, we will learn to control our appetites and passions. We are a little stronger by having proved to ourselves that we have self-control. Fasting Gives Us Spiritual Power When we fast wisely and prayerfully, we develop our faith. With that faith we will have greater spiritual power.

Worthy-living“Daily virtuous living allows constant companionship from the Holy Ghost”

#2

Virtuous living “at all times and in all things, and in all places” qualifies you for the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost. When you are baptized and confirmed, you are given the gift of the Holy Ghost to guide all aspects of your life.

Since the Holy Ghost does not dwell in unclean tabernacles, living a virtuous life is a prerequisite to having the companionship

of the Holy Ghost and receiving the blessings of temple ordinances.

“Because the Savior loves us, he gave his life so we can repent”#4

Because the Savior loves you and has given His life for you, you can repent. Repentance is an act of faith in Jesus Christ. Read:

Worthy-participate

Determine to partake worthily of the sacrament each week and fill your life with virtuous activities that will bring spiritual power. As you do this, you will grow stronger in your ability to resist temptation, keep the commandments, and become more like Jesus Christ.

Bread

Moroni 10:32-33 Enos Repentance section in “For the Strength of Youth” pamphlet

The Savior’s atoning sacrifice has made it possible for you to be forgiven of your sins. Read the sacrament prayers:

O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this bread to the souls of all those who partake of it, that they may eat in remembrance of the body of thy Son, and witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son, and always remember him and keep his commandments which he has given them; that they may always have his Spirit to be with them. Amen.

Water

O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this wine to the souls of all those who drink of it, that they may do it in remembrance of the blood of thy Son, which was shed for them; that they may witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they do always remember him, that they may have his Spirit to be with them. Amen.

I promise to partake worthily of the sacrament each week.________________
