The Rhine is Basel’s best-kept“secret”. As an important traderoute, the river played a key role inmaking Basel the city it is today.Even now, the Rhine continues toenhance the quality of life in Baselfor residents and visitors alike. Notonly does it provide Basel with anatural link to the world beyond, butit also offers space for recreation –and, in doing so, inspires the people, events and architecture of the city. And it’s on the banks of the river – or“Riviera”, as locals call it – wherethe city comes out to play: strollingcouples, sun worshippers, studentsmingling with office workers, allseeking refuge and relaxation. It allexudes a certain Mediterraneancharm. Take the traditional dip inthe Rhine down at Birsköpfli, or letthe current simply take you down-stream past the Old Town, or enjoya warm summer evening by the riv-er bank – and then you’ll see why.

Busy waterwayThe “Riviera” is not the only hub ofactivity; there’s also plenty of actionon the river itself. Dozens of bargesfollow the Rhine upstream everyday, passing narrowly under thecity’s bridges. The river is also servedby four ferries, which have beenrunning since the mid-19th century.Take the short ride to the otherside, then enjoy the view as yousettle down on the banks of theriver or at one of numerous river-side cafes.

Swimming in the RhineTo truly understand the spirit ofBasel, you need to have taken theplunge into the Rhine. Head for oneof the city’s dedicated swimmingplatforms, put on your bathers andwalk upstream. Then let yourselfdrift downstream before emergingon the bank in front of the oldKaserne building to bask in the sun.

FerriesBasel’s ferries began taking passen-gers across the Rhine 150 yearsago. Sound the jetty bell, wave tothe ferryman, jump aboard, andthen just let the river current takeyou to the other side. (B1, C4, E7, G7)

Thanks to a mild climate, the Romanschose to settle here in 40 BC. Eventsduring the Middle Ages – such asthe Church Council, the founding ofSwitzerland’s oldest university in1460, and the turbulent Reformationperiod – marked particularly im -portant milestones for the city.During Erasmus’ era, the city was aseat of humanist learning and acentre for printing and paper pro-duction. No matter how old or recent, history is omnipresent and providesan interesting counterpoint to themodernity of present-day Basel. Itis to this contrast that the people of Basel owe their incredibly tolerantand cosmopolitan view of life – anopen-mindedness reflected in Basel’swealth of museum artefacts andarchitectural masterpieces.
