Strategies in the classroom

Setting your own Learning ObjectivesO I still set class objectives but….

O If the class are starting to work on different units at different levels - it is a good way for them and you to keep track of what they are doing

O A teacher can view ALL the objectives

O Use it as a plenary – who met THEIR objectives – then who met MY objectives

O Get them to Peer Assess Evidence of this

Page 6: Welcome Workshop : Do you use ICT as a teaching tool?

Work on the board when they come in

O Log on and do this……..

O Make sure it is a task that allows for all students to trickle in from all the different lessons, log on & get a bit of the starter done

Page 7: Welcome Workshop : Do you use ICT as a teaching tool?

Starter allowing enough time for all students to log on

O There’s nothing worse…..

O All the students come in at different times, they can all stand out side or……

O Get started – use this time to get them logged on – time your starter well so it covers a good time scale

Page 8: Welcome Workshop : Do you use ICT as a teaching tool?

Screens off, face the front - 321

O This is a good strategy and habit to get into

O I have tried putting the ownership on them – IF they think they can look at me with their screen still on – I will not tell them off – BUT few succeed!!!

O It helps with concentration – avoids them being too distracted.

O Walk around the class as you are talking so you don’t miss anyone!

Page 9: Welcome Workshop : Do you use ICT as a teaching tool?

The VLE as a teaching toolO Ofsted “ICT in Schools 2008-2011” Report states:O Most of the schools either had a virtual learning environment in

full use or were in the process of installing one. Where schools were making regular use of a virtual learning environment, they had been able to enhance and enrich many aspects of school life, including the quality of learning resources, communications with parents, and assessment and tracking processes.

O Do you have/use one?

O We use our VLE for resources, uploading students work, giving feedback and grades as a way of assessment.

O It stores work (if backed up)O It allows work to be completed in and out of the classroomO Swift marking and feedback

O LINK TO LAUNCESTON COLLEGE VLE

Peer Assessment

O Get them to peer assess work before they hand it in – saves loads of time as they pick up several errors for you!

O Helps them learn from each other

O Gives them new ideas

O Encourages them to do well when looking at other peoples work

Page 11: Welcome Workshop : Do you use ICT as a teaching tool?

Independent LearningO Push Independent learning – try and get the students to

take ownership for their work and progression in the subject!

O If they feel they are in control (ish;-) I find they tend to get more engaged in the lesson

O Don’t give them answers, give them clues to the answer

O Encourage them to look at the assignment or ask a peer

O Play music to encourage a calm working environment.O Or…I let them listen to iPods when they are working,

however I set the ground rules for them first

Page 12: Welcome Workshop : Do you use ICT as a teaching tool?

Helping each other

O They get a buzz from helping each other

O If they can see on the board which tasks everyone has completed, they can look to see who has completed the task they are stuck on to get help rather than asking me

O If a student doesn’t understand something, get their peer that does understand it explain it to them – it may help them understand it!

VLE upload, quick turnaround

O We don’t use this for every class but most of the GCSE work for ICT

O It’s quickO It means you have a saved copy so if they delete

it from their folder you still have a copyO It is accessible from school and home for markingO No folders to carry!O Quick and easy grading and feedback systemO Class grades all in one place if groups are set

Page 15: Welcome Workshop : Do you use ICT as a teaching tool?

Give them a goal then finish for HW

O Our GCSE classes we aim for:O 2 lessons per task (approx) – then

they finish it for homeworkO Extension work in class is the Merit &

Distinction work to stretch the more able

O Giving them a goal gives them something to work towards

O Keeps them motivated

Page 16: Welcome Workshop : Do you use ICT as a teaching tool?

Clear rules: set an ICT contract

O Either at the beginning of each lesson if ICT is used little

O Or at the beginning of the year we set our clear expectations

O Why not get the students to create a contract they agree to follow!

Page 17: Welcome Workshop : Do you use ICT as a teaching tool?

Move around the classroom

Page 18: Welcome Workshop : Do you use ICT as a teaching tool?

Not like that…….!O Try and stand and teach from the hot spotsO Get a student to control the smart board so

you can have freedom to move aroundO During coursework lessons keep moving

around the classroom encouraging students to:O Work Independently eg not relying on YOUO Helping each otherO Peer assessing workO Praise good workO Give feedback to encourage improvement

Page 19: Welcome Workshop : Do you use ICT as a teaching tool?

Get students to teach parts/demo

O As a faculty we have got students to demonstrate work to get them involved

O We have also given them chunks of the lesson to teach to give them ownership

O It works really well!

Page 20: Welcome Workshop : Do you use ICT as a teaching tool?

Praise!O Really important!

O They like having their work displayed or shown to the class

O They like seeing how well they are doing against the rest of the class

O Most like praise when they do things well (zaps means prizes)

O It makes them feel good when they finish the work to a Pass and are given the opportunity to work to a higher grade

O Some comments from a recent ICT survey:O “The teacher is always happy and never in a mood”O “She is always smiling”O This gives a positive and friendly environment that students

feel comfortable in.

Page 29: Welcome Workshop : Do you use ICT as a teaching tool?

Cross CurriculumO Ofsted ICT in Schools 2008 – 2011 report states:

Pupils’ use of ICT in other subjects was only occasionally tracked or recorded. For those students in Key Stage 4 who were not receiving specialist ICT teaching there was no systematic record of their learning in ICT and no means for teachers or pupils to know whether they had gaps in their knowledge.

O It has been suggested that:O When using ICT in your subject you should use

levels/grades for ICT as well as your subjectO Include in your lesson objectives/

assessment for ICT skills if using an ICT suite
