DIRECTOR’S NOTE

6

I think what attracts me to Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, aside from the fact that it is an uproariously funny and sexy celebration of the ins-and-outs of love, is the unorthodox sophistication and complexity of its music and construct as a musical love story. These characters, and their individual journeys to love are not perfectly conceived and designed, like we see in other musicals. They are elaborate, layered and messy - which make them so much more universal, and therefore more real than what we commonly find in most other romantic musical comedies. Most musicals rely heavily on a convention wherein characters experience love at first sight and arrive quickly at emotional states that push them to song and dance, which only add to the inherent and age-old argument regarding believability in musicals as a theatrical form. In his musicals, however, Stephen Sondheim writes music and lyrics that propel the plot line through character intention and want, and he writes them for characters in relationships with one another which are steeped in a richness, and past history. His characters are far from perfect. They make mistakes, and they break promises, and they learn from it all, and they eventually find one another, which is at the core of the play; finally finding and being with the person you were meant for, and whom was meant for you. Getting there is deliciously faceted, and at once harrowing and hilarious, because intrinsically we see ourselves in each character and each relationship. I think it is one of his finest achievements, and one of the best musicals of all time. I want to thank the ambitious and affluent village of artists, musicians and technicians who have collaborated on this production! It has been a real dream of a process for me, and I hope that it has been the same for them. When you get a chance to work with such a talented cast and crew, you forget that it is work and you can immerse yourself in the joy of the moments that are created each time a person says, “Yes - we can do this!” I count myself very fortunate to work with each and every one of them. Thank you all!

Enjoy the show!

GAIL REINE (Costume Shop Manager/Wardrobe Head) has been with 6th Street for a little over 6 years starting as a volunteer in the costume shop, and whose work has progressed to being a SOTA nominee in costume design. With a degree in graphic design, she worked for many years in the field and has been able to utilize those skills, bringing with her an “eye for design.” A native Santa Rosan, she is happy to be a part of such a community favorite as 6th Street and its amazing staff and rotating talent.

JARED SAKREN (Executive Director) comes to the organization after 15 years as the Producing Artistic Director of the Southwest Shakespeare Company, the premiere classical theatre of Arizona where he served as both the management and artistic leader. She most recently directed “Wicked Frozen” at the New York Musical Theater festival, which won Best Direction in its series. She can be seen these days improvising with Evil Comedy (Santa Rosa), teaching dance, and absolutely not choreographing while driving because that would be unsafe.

6TH STREET SPOTLIGHT

Ryan Severt, Associate Technical Director

Ryan Severt has been part of the 6th Street Playhouse family and production team for over three years now, and in that time has worn many hats - and all of them with amazing success! A Sonoma County native, Ryan started as an intern with us in 2013 while he was enrolled in the Theatre Department at Arizona State University. During his

time with us as an intern, Ryan worked on the production team as a carpenter and painter. After leaving ASU in 2015, Ryan returned to his home here at 6th Street Playhouse to become one of our Master Carpenters, working alongside our esteemed Technical Staff and in tandem with the guest artist designers we hire from around the United States, helping to realize their vision and get our shows on stage with professionalism and great attention to detail. Last May, Ryan served as interim Technical Director through the entire summer of 2016, and at the beginning of the current season, Ryan was promoted to Associate Technical Director here at the Playhouse. Over the last few seasons Ryan has also graced our stage as an actor, playing roles in last season’s From Russia With Love, and My Fair Lady. For the last two years he has appeared as Mr. Marvel/Ghost of Christmas Future, and has been a member of the now-traditional The Rocky Horror Show here at the Playhouse. Ryan is also a playwright, musician, lighting designer, projection designer, sound designer, stage manager, and is currently earning his welding certification at the Santa Rosa Junior College. Ryan is an invaluable theatre maker here at the 6th Street Playhouse, and we are extremely fortunate to have him on our team. He is passionate and intense; always striving to create and be part of a successful process, and put the best product on stage - no matter what his role might be on any given day! He is a renaissance man in every respect, but most of all Ryan is a dedicated and kind man, and embodies the spirit of collaboration. We take this opportunity to shine this 6th Street Spotlight on Ryan Severt! Thank you for the passion, creativity and heart you put forth on every project, every day!

6th Street Playhouse is illuminating the talents of the theatre makers who work to ensure every production creates a spectacular experience for our

patrons. In this playbill, we shine the spotlight on:

In 2004, two separate theatre companies - The Santa Rosa Players (est. 1971) and Actors Theatre of Sonoma County (est. 1984) - joined forces and transformed the 107-year-old Del Monte cannery in Santa Rosa’s Railroad Square into the 6th Street Playhouse. This $1.3 million dollar renovation resulted in a state-of-the-art theatre facility, which opened to acclaim in 2005.

In July 2007, the main stage was named for Santa Rosa businessman and arts patron, G.K. Hardt. In 2009, a second more intimate theatre space - The Studio - was opened. Together, these two theatres are home to dramatic, musical, and improv performances, School of Drama presentations, and a variety of special events.

6th Street Playhouse is honored to have received the City of Santa Rosa Award for Cultural Enrichment and the Sonoma County Historical Society Award for Preservation of a Historical Building. Our productions have received critical acclaim with nominations and awards from the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle, and our company has been named Best of Sonoma County by The Press Democrat and Best of the North Bay by The Bohemian.

What started as a small endeavor continues to grow year after year with the support of our community. We look forward to continuing to offer outstanding productions and educational programs here at 6th Street Playhouse.
