Here are some skills we will be working on throughout the month:

LiteracyPhonics: This month, we will begin to learn TWO letters a week! The letters we will be learning are: Jj, Yy, Zz, Uu, Hh, Oo, Qq. We will focus on:

*Identifying uppercase/lowercase

*Identifying the sound in the beginning of words and at the end of words*Differentiating between the sounds of these letters and other sounds

*tall: b,d,f,h,k, l, t*short: a,c,e,i,m,n,o,r,s,u,v,w,x,z*low: g,j,p,q,y

Handwriting: To go along with phonics, we will work on writing the uppercase and lowercase letters that we will be learning. Our main focus while writing these letters is that they are on the writing lines in the correct place. We will really be looking for proper grasp of the pencil, and correct formation of the letters. You can help by making sure and reinforcing that your child

is starting from left to right, and top to bottom when writing at home.

Word Work: This month we will learn new word families, and continue to practice and be assessed on the word families we have already learned. Every Friday, there will be a dictation test where students will have to write 5 words from the new word family, and 5 words from old word families that we have already

learned. They will also be responsible for writing a sentence that includes new word family words. These tests allow us to see that students are understanding and applying the skills that have been taught. The word families we will focus on this month are: February 5: -op (cop, mop, top)

February 12: -ot (cot, tot, lot)February 20: -og (log, dog, hog) February 26: -en (hen, ten, men)

Sight Words: This month we will continue to learn THREE sight words each week. Please make sure you are practicing sight words with your child as often as possible. Confidently knowing how to read and write these words will help your child tremendously as they continue to learn how to read and write independently. The

Writing: This month we will continue to practice writing sentences and using our writing check list for students to go back and use to check their writing. Our focus will be

on:*Our 6 writing rules. (5 original rules + word family words being spelled correctly)*We will be working on different kinds of sentences: question, telling, and exclamatory. We will learn about punctuation usage and we will practice writing various types of sentences.

learning about this month! NUMBERS GREATER THAN 10 : We will

learn how to write, show, and count groups that have amounts from 10-20. When learning about these numbers, we will focus on how the first number tells how many GROUPS of 10 there are, and the second number tells how many ones. For example (13 means 1 group of ten and 3 ones).

ADDING/SUBTRACTING : After learning

how to count, write, and show numbers to 20, we will move on to solving addition and subtraction problems with these numbers. We will focus on recognizing 10 as the first addened. For example, 10 + 5 = 15 or 10 + 3 = 13.

Science:This month we will finish up our unit on The Needs of Humans. We will finish learning

about recycling and how to sort our recycled materials into various categories such as rubber, metal, paper, and plastic. Then we will move into our topic on Basic Needs of Living Things. We will begin learning about this topic by discussing plants and the things that they need in order to survive. Social Studies:

This month, we will be talking about our Honesty Shooting Star for Character Education. We will talk about how we can show honesty at home and at school.
