11 –– MMEESSSSAAGGEE FFRROOMM RRIICCHHAARRDD Sound Connections Family! Greetings from your hard-working and diligent Music Ministry Team. We are still feeling so much momentum from our January meetings toward being much more service oriented to our music directors, ministers and artists in the field. We are compiling a set of documents that will go on the new Unity joint website (www.unity.org/music) on a variety of topics

relevant to you and your ministry; Topics such as Hiring a Music Director and appropriate pay scale, how to host successful events, how to host guest musicians and speakers, suggested orders of service, how to maximize the potential of performers from your congregation, a list of mainstream songs that can be used in your services and lots more. We are also gathering information for new and pioneering churches to create a musical “welcome packet” from the MMT to let new ministries know we are here to assist them. We’ve waited for over a month to hear from the Association Executive team concerning approval for our two anchor projects; this year’s songbook and the 2009 Sound Connections Music Conference, and PRAISE GOD – both were approved for this year! Our 2009 Songbook will be entitled, “Can I Get An Amen!” after a song written by hit Nashville songwriter Rich Fagan (“Sold” and “Be My Baby Tonight” for John Michael Montgomery to name just a few.) The book is a perfect mix of chants, congregational songs and solos with singable choruses. We noticed more and more music directors sending us great songs, surely as a result of the songwriting emphasis we’ve had at our Sound Connections music conferences. Wright On! This year’s Sound Connections Conference theme is “Music Speaks Louder Than Words”. We will have a Sound Connections Registration form ready for you by next issue. Be sure to block out the dates now so you do not miss Sound Connections 2009 with Daniel Nahmod. Do you think your church is too small to bring in a Grammy Award winning artist and songwriter to perform for your congregation? Check out the “From The Road” chapter featuring Barry Goldstein. We’ve held over our Easter Resources page and included another great Easter selection for our sheet music attachment. All in all another great issue from your Music Ministry Team! Διμινισηεδ 7τη Χηορδσ μ εε by David Ezell Diminished 7th chords can spice up the harmony of many songs we play. Some songs already have them, some songs have great places to substitute them for the original chords, and we can use them in our original work. A diminished 7th has all minor thirds (1 1/2 steps) between root, 3rd, 5th and 7th. Then there’s the same minor 3rd interval

between the 7th and the octave of the root. Because of this there are really only three diminished 7th chords, and each one has four names: A#, C#, E, G B, D, F, Ab B#(C), D#, F#, A C#, E, G, Bb D, F, Ab, Cb(B) D#, F#, A, C E, G, Bb, Db E#(F), G#, B, D F#, A, C, Eb G, Bb, Db, Fb (E) G#, B, D, F A, C, Eb, Gb Many guitar and keyboard players can easily add interest to their performances by learning the three diminished chords, and the four names for each. Fretboards for all three are found in an attachment to this issue.

A diminished 7th usually functions like a dominant (5) chord, and the root movement is up a half step. For example, the E diminished 7th can take the place of a C7 and lead to F or F minor. The E diminished 7th has most of the notes of the C7, including E and Bb, the critically important 4th and 7th notes of the F scale. In the Wings of Song hymnal, diminished 7ths functioning as dominants can be found in # 26, (m. 14) # 44 (mm. 3, 11, 12) # 69, # 76 (m. 9) # 85 (m. 5) and # 87 (mm. 6, 13) It works well to substitute a diminished 7th functioning as dominant in # 3 (m. 28) # and 72 (m. 14). Another way for a diminished 7th to function is as a “common-tone diminished 7th.” This happens when one or more members of the diminished 7th also occurs in the following chord. This use of diminished 7th is less frequent in most music, but happens quite a bit in

the first 100 hymns of Wings of Song: # 7, # 31, # 47, # 76, # 87, # 93 and # 95. In most of these songs the common-tone diminished 7th happens near the beginning. A common-tone diminished 7th resolution can be substituted in # 30 (m. 4). A third interesting way for the diminished 7th to function combines the smooth voice leading of the common-tone resolution with the strong flowing movement of the dominant resolution. Here, the chord immediately following the diminished 7th has a note in common, and the chord after that is a major chord with the root up a half step from the diminished 7th: #45, #49, #81, and #95 (m. 13). You can also use this type of diminished 7th resolution by substituting in # 89 (m. 14) and # 93 (m. 6). Many times spelling of diminished chords doesn’t conform to the idea of everything being a third apart. Spelling them in a technically correct way can result in some unusual notes. In writing chord symbols, a diminished chord can be indicated by a small circle after the root name.

David Ezell is a member of the Music Ministry Team, Music Director at Christ Unity of Columbia (SC) and President of Heart Wind Music , LLC.

RRAAIISSEE MMEE UUPP by Faith Rivera reviewed by Sue Riley The newest CD from Faith Rivera is pure delight. Faith, already widely known for her amazing, upbeat original songs and her fabulous voice, has produced a CD of newly interpreted cover songs. One of my favorites from this CD is Faith’s version of Peter

Mayer’s wonderful song “Holy Now”. Faith has added some harmonies and put this to a groove! Our band has already performed this version and they were crazy about it. Another rocker is Faith’s version of “This Little Light of Mine”. For all of those ministries who use a version of this song to bring in their youth ministries, this version will have them dancing down the aisles. In fact, I doubt that anyone in the congregation could keep from dancing. Although Faith wrote some additional verses for a couple of the songs, the only completely original song on this CD is “Thing Called Life”, which is an upbeat affirmation of the power of positive thinking. This is a FUN song, perfect for youth or the young at heart. This is a great CD to have in your car to listen to while you’re stuck in traffic. In this innovative CD, Faith breathes new life into songs that have been covered by hundreds of other artists. You will look at such classics as “Ave Maria” and “What a Wonderful World” with new eyes, and perhaps find new uses for these spiritual “pop” songs and beautiful hymns such as Josh Grobin’s “You Raise Me Up”, the Beatles’ “All You Need Is Love”, “Wind Beneath My Wings” and even a Freddy Mercury (Queen) song, “Don’t Stop Me Now”. I love it!

Pilgrimage - Erin McGaughan Reviewed by Richard Mekdeci Most CDs that we review are the work of artists expressing themselves through their New Thought filters and producing music that is mostly suitable for our churches. In the case of Erin McGaughan’s newest compilation Pilgrimage, Erin has written explicitly and solely, music for use in New Thought churches –

specifically, for use in interfaith settings. And you can be sure Erin knows from whence she writes, serving as director of the “Joyful Arts Ministry” at Seattle Unity since 2004 and prior to that at the Seattle Center for Spiritual Living. Pilgrimage is the result of Erin’s longtime study of comparative religion, myth and practice and is a collection of original chants that spring from Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, Taoist, Jewish, Christian, Yoruba and New Thought traditions. The musical range is impressive from joyous dancing to meditation contemplation, and all staying true to the ethnic origins, and languages of the traditions from which they derive. Three Jewels Chant is a rhythmic chant from Indian Buddhism. The words are: Budhham saranam gacchami (I take refuge in the Buddha or enlightened being) Dhammam saranam gacchami (I take refuge in the Dharma or enlightened teachings) Sangham saranam gacchami (I take refuge in the sangha or enlightened community) Thus the Three Jewels or the Trinity of Buddhism.

Erin has an infectious call and response treatment of the well known Hindu mantra Om Namah Shivaya (the Hindu version of “Praise God!”), as well as a beautiful interpretation of a scripture inspired from Isaiah 40:6 entitled “All Flesh Is Grass”. All in all this is a well thought out, well prayed through and well written compilation of congregational chants that would augment any New Thought liturgy. You can purchase Pilgrimage and see the lyrics and their origins and translations at www.erinmcgaughan.com/lyrics.aspx You can get the sheet music for any of these chants by emailing Erin at [email protected]

The Stone Rolls Away4

The Stone Rolls Awayby Kelvin McNeal

I found a stone, and the stone was heavy and couldn't be moved, I found a cloud and the cloud was gray and I couldn't see through. I looked under the stone, behind the cloud,

for light and air and grace and hope.

I found a river, and the river was wide and it couldn't be crossed, I found a forest, and the forest was deep and I'd only get lost. And I looked beyond the river and the forest,

for grace and peace and freedom and light, But I couldn't get through, and I couldn't go over and I couldn't cross

and I couldn't be moved.

Finally I found a drop of sunlight and it warmed the stone, yes, it warmed the stone,

Finally I found a breath of breeze, and it melted the cloud, oh, it melted the cloud.

And I looked through the trees, and the river was parted, by light and air and grace and freedom and hope.

And then I found my heart, and the stone rolled away. And then I found my sight, and the cloud blew away And then I found the light, and the air and the grace and the peace And then that drop of sun was the infinite presence of light. And then that breath of breeze was the infinite presence of air, And then I found the grace,

and the peace and the joy and the love and the freedom. And the stone rolls away.
