Pre-course requirements: None. However, we strongly recommend that an ENG1 medical examination is undertaken prior to joining the course to prevent disappointment if it is later found that your health prevents you from participating. Duration: 14-16 Weeks (weather dependent) Venue: Royal Cape Yacht Club, Cape Town and Yachtport SA, Saldanha Bay Fees: Please see the attached booking form for prices which include 15%VAT and are payable to Yachtmaster Sailing School. * - For International transfers, please add an extra R400 for clearance bank fees* Included in the Course fees is:

• All your training material. For students (except RYA Competent Crew Practical) we provide you with a (returnable) handheld suitcase with all the necessary items you will need on course ie English language books such as RYA Training Almanac (Southern Hemisphere), South African List of Lights and Radio Signals, Symbols and Abbreviations used on South African Charts, International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs), Portland Plotter, divider and sharpener. We will also provide you with the following which you will be able to keep: RYA Logbook, Yachtmaster Sailing School pen, 72-page blank quad exercise book and blank almanac pages for theory.

• Your own personal RYA Logbook.

• Use of RYA Reference Books and navigation equipment

• During the practical live-aboard weeks on the yachts, your food, accommodation will be included.

By special request, we will provide you with the use of wet weather gear (foulies). This needs to be returned to the school at the end of your program together with the handheld suitcase and all its contents.

We will also provide you an access card to the Royal Cape Yacht Club and ask for a R200 deposit when you arrive on the first classroom course.

If you are serious about learning to sail and a following a possible career in the Professional Yachting Industry, our Yachtmaster Ocean Package provides you with the standard internationally, recognised qualifications and skills needed to succeed and become an expert sailor. With no prior experience, this course takes you through all the RYA training modules up to Yachtmaster Ocean, along with several additional short courses, training and commercial endorsement requirements to ensure a high level of competence and confidence. You will receive at least 2500 miles of thorough sail training for your RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and Ocean exams.

RYA/MCA Competent Crew Practical During this essential introductory course, you will be introduced to the wonderful world of sailing! The aim is to build a solid foundation in the correct procedures, including safety, seamanship, rope work, knots, splicing and helmsman-ship that will equip you with all you need to be a competent crew member. You will be exposed to the latest sailing terminology and learn many different approaches and techniques. Duration: 5 days This includes:

RYA/MCA VHF Radio Operation SRC (Short Range Certificate) A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. If you own a marine radio hand held or fixed set, you are required by law to hold an operator’s license. This course will teach you the basics of operating and understanding a VHF radio on board a vessel. We use modified VHF training Radio’s produced by ICOM and SIMRAD. These have been modified so that transmissions are suppressed. Duration: 1 day The Course Includes:

RYA/MCA Diesel Engine Maintenance By gaining the RYA/ MCA Diesel Engine Maintenance Certificate, you will be able to manage and maintain a Marine Diesel Engine. You will learn about necessary engine maintenance and systems and how to avoid most mechanical breakdowns while out at sea. This course is also useful to candidates wanting to work alongside engineers on Yachts or smaller Super Yachts and entitles the holder to be in charge of a Sailing Vessel’s engine, up to 750 kW, in Category 0 Waters. Presented in our classroom which is based at the Royal Cape Yacht Club in Cape Town. Your instructor will have extensive experience in maintaining and repairing various marine motors up to a substantial amount of horse power. Duration: 1 Day This Course Includes:

We use a state of the art Radar Simulator on a PC and projector to prepare students for the use of real equipment fitted on vessels at sea. Duration: 1 day

The Theory Course is the Same for Motor and Sail. Duration: 7 days This Includes:

This gives you the extra boat handling and skippering experience that you need, in some of the most challenging conditions in the world. You will also have the opportunity to gain all the mileage, sea time and night hours required for your RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Exams. Including days as the Skipper, 60 mile passages and 60 mile passages as the Skipper required for the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Qualification. All the mileage gained during these trips will be signed off in your Logbook. The Skills Development trips will take you along some of the most unspoilt and beautiful coastlines in South Africa, including both the wonders of the cold waters of the west coast and the temperate waters of the well-known east coast. Weather permitting, we take you on an Ocean Adventure trip from Cape Town to St. Helena Island for these 6 weeks. This adventure is designed and introduced for you to be build your miles and experience towards obtaining your Yachtmaster Offshore. We sail from Cape Town to Luderitz and perhaps a stop off in Walvis Bay in Namibia and then onto the beautiful island of St. Helena in the Atlantic Ocean. After a couple of days of sightseeing and rest you will sail directly back to Cape Town. You will be fully involved in the running of the boat, choosing routes, preparing the vessel, standing and planning watches. Our goal is to give our students as much exposure as possible, all while having a good time. This Includes:

Money Matters: The Saint Helena pound is the currency of the Atlantic islands of Saint Helena and Ascension, which are constituent parts of the British overseas territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. It is fixed at parity with the pound sterling and as such both currencies are commonly accepted and circulated. ATM’S: There are ATM’S at the airports and the larger towns. Ensure you notify your bank of your intention to travel. Money drawn will be issued in local currency. Vaccinations: Not required for the St. Helena trip. Passport's We will need full names as per passport with passport numbers to complete the booking with confirmation of your flight tickets if we feel it safe to travel the East Coast. Travel Insurance Please arrange your own personal travel insurance. Students that are not South African citizens need to confirm with Yachtmaster if they have arranged it with their airline prior to arriving in Cape Town.

This practical training course is presented by a certified and highly experienced Yachtmaster Instructor.

RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Ocean Theory This is a course in astro-navigation, worldwide meteorology and ocean currents, which also reveals the mysteries of the sextant. It assumes a knowledge of all subjects covered in all the other shore-based courses (RYA Day Skipper & Coastal/Offshore Theory). NOTE! The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate is required BEFORE you can take your RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Exam. Duration: 7 days

• Super yachting industry

• Deck maintenance skills (filing and fairing, varnishing, teak-oiling, priming, deck acid)

• Wash downs

• General deck hand duties

• Anchoring

• Watch keeping

• Line handling and safety drills.

• Familiarization with crew houses, crewing agencies and job finding techniques, offshore bank accounts.

Commercial Requirements

You will need to complete STCW and the RYA Online PPR courses as well as an ENG1 Medical Examination should you wish to work on commercial vessels in any maritime industry.

STCW STCW certificates are internationally recognized marine safety certificates, which are required to enable you to work on commercial vessels in any maritime industry. Included are Elementary First Aid; Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention; Personal Survival Techniques with Proficiency in Life Raft; Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities; Proficiency in Designated Security Duties Duration: 11 days

RYA Professional Practices & Responsibilities (PPR) PPR is an RYA online course required for commercial endorsement. Yachtmaster Sailing School will register you online to take the course. Fees: R1,000.00 (payable to Yachtmaster Sailing School)

ENG 1 Medical Examination Fees: R2,400.00 (paid directly to doctor). This Internationally accredited and recognized medical examination is vital to further your career on commercial vessels in the yachting and super yachting industries. Only medicals conducted by an MCA approved Medical Practical (not a General Practitioner) will be accepted. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/mca-approved-doctors-overseas

SAS (South African Sailing) Courses Commercial RYA qualifications are the preferred qualification requirements and are recognized around the world. However, the South African Maritime Authority (SAMSA) doesn’t recognize the RYA qualifications if they are obtained in South Africa. It is therefore imperative that in order to captain a ship in SA waters that you obtain your SAS qualifications. We can arrange for you to take SAS examinations. We offer coaching for the SAS theory modules.

If you wish to do commercial work in South Africa, then you will have to do a SAMSA Under 25 ton

Commercial License Examination. We can assist you in obtaining the certificate.
