CELEBRATION OF RECONCILIATION

Call to Confession:

We have praised God's name, for he is worthy of all honor.

We have received his peace, which assures us of his love.

We have extended peace to each other.

But we do not always live in peace with one another.

We do not always live as those who are loved by God.

We are not always ready to sing God's praise.

And so we come before him with our prayers of confession.

Prayer of Confession:

Merciful God,

This week we have sinned against you in more ways than we can count.

We've lied, broken promises, and gossiped.

We've misused our time, and our money, and our affections.

We've hidden ourselves from you, ashamed of our brokenness, afraid to

acknowledge our sin.

Lift us from our shame and darkness, God. Hear our cry to you.

Gbemi, Jesu (1x in Yoruba) .................................... Lift Up Your Hearts #891

Forgive us, God, for the times that we sin against you, and the times

when we fail to trust your mercy.

Give us hearts that are ready to do your will, and spirits eager to turn

to you as the source of our salvation, our courage, and our strength.

Lift us from our shame and darkness, God, into the countenance of your light.

Gbemi, Jesu (1x in English)

Assurance of Pardon:

Hear these words of good news from Romans 8:15-17:

"You did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear,

but you have received a spirit of adoption.

When we cry, 'Abba! Father!' it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit

that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint

heirs of Christ.” God does lift us from the darkness so we can stand on his

promise: in Christ we are forgiven! Here On Jesus Christ I Will Stand ......................... Lift Up Your Hearts #708

* Litany for the Four Directions Dr. Stephen J. Mulder Face North (atrium) Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayers for the North. We praise you for the beauty of the Canadian Rockies and for cobalt-blue lakes. For Scandinavian fjords, majestic glaciers, and the Northern Lights; For migrating herds of caribou and pods of whales, for polar bears, seals and reindeer. We praise you for the beauty of the North. With an abundance of innovation, learning, technology and wealth you have blessed the Northern peoples. Yet they grapple with the effects of global warming, rising seas levels, and flooding. In many places freedom and democracy are under attack. Loneliness and isolation threaten the mental health of those who live in darkness through short winter days. Lord, have mercy on the people of the North. Face East (balcony) Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayers for the East. We praise you for the East: for ancient, mystical civilizations For the Fertile Crescent and the Holy Land. For the Taj Mahal and Mount Everest. For the Great Wall and for the pyramids. For the science and secrets contained in fossils and archeological artifacts. For expansive lands and significant natural resources. For crocodiles, camels, and giant pandas. We praise you for the beauty of the East. We pray for those trapped in overcrowded cities, threatened by disease and waste; For skies filled with pollution and tainted water supplies. We pray for victims of labor abuse. For those working long hours in poor conditions for insufficient pay. We pray for those whose lives and freedom are threatened by tyrants. Lord, have mercy on the people of the East.

Face South (windows) Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayers for the South. We praise you for the South: for expansive farmlands and lush jungles. For waterfalls and mighty rivers. For majestic Andes mountain ranges and breathtaking seascapes. For formidable volcanoes, and ancient ruins. For Victoria Falls, the Great Barrier Reef, and beautiful South Pacific islands. For kangaroos, koala bears, and penguins. We praise you for the beauty of the South. We pray for the charred remains left in the wake of Australian wildfires. For coral reefs that are being destroyed by natural and human influences. For refugees fleeing oppression and persecution. For those living in fear because of drug cartels and corrupt leaders. We pray for those affected by violent hurricanes and other natural disasters, And those who live daily with little money, little security, and little hope. Lord, have mercy on the people of the South.

Face West (pulpit) Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayers for the West. We praise you for our own hemisphere; For America and for Europe. For William Shakespeare, the lightbulb the automobile, and Johann Sebastian Bach. For the Grand Canyon and the Rocky Mountains, For the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty, For great cathedrals and towering skyscrapers. For wild horses, ducks and geese, livestock, and for our animal companions. We praise you for the beauty of the West. We pray for those suffering from depression and mental health issues. For those who are lonely and friendless. For those struggling with addictions and vices. We pray for the unrest in our governments, For conflict and tension within and among nations. We pray for our search for a common identity. We pray for our religious struggles, our political struggles, and our economic struggles. We pray for those who are marginalized and those who struggle to have a voice. Lord, have mercy on the people of the West. Lord, In your mercy, Unite us as a global community. As we rise to go out into the world, Help us to share your love with all: Those in the North, the East, the South, and the West. Until you come again to bring us to your one table, Where all are welcome. Amen

We express our sympathy to Nancy Brouwer, Barb, Brian & Sydney Fritz and Robert & Julie Brouwer in the death of husband, father, and grandfather, Junior Brouwer last week. We pray for comfort and peace.

“We would like to thank all those who prayed, sent cards and supported both of us during this long journey with Lee's illness. The kindness and love of the congregation is a remarkable blessing. We are confident for God's leading as we continue to move forward. Lee is gaining strength and increases his activity. He is still somewhat dizzy, and, we prayerfully look forward to his next CT scan on February 9 in Texas.” Lee & Barb Hammond

Next Sunday Rev. Stan Mast will be leading us in worship.

Today in Adult Enrichment we look forward to another visit from Jeff Munroe, who has opened our eyes to many a good book over the years. This time he will review a book he himself has written, Reading Buechner, about a man Munroe considers “the greatest spiritu-al writer of our times.” Whether you have read Buechner, know of him, or never heard of him, it makes no difference. Hearing Munroe is sure to delight and reward. For any who have had issues with hearing our various speakers, we are very happy to announce that all speakers will be wearing an over-the-ear microphone from now on and we have very good sound in our Adult Enrichment room. Please try again, if this has kept you away!

Nurse’s Notes: What is your Wellness Vision? Not your New Year’s resolution. That has most likely already been broken! But what is your vision for your own wellness in 2020? In the next few weeks we will explore this concept of a “wellness vision” by using the “Model for Healthy Living” developed by Church Health. Every aspect of this model contributes to a full life. We honor God when we care for our bodies.

Parish Nurse office hours will be available on Tuesday, January 28 from 9:00 am - noon.
