Reformed GCSEs

From September 2015, students in year 10

will begin to take new reformed GCSEs.

Current Y10 will be the first year group to

do all new GCSEs

Page 4: Welcome to Y10...Welcome to Y10 Parents’ Information Evening 20TH SEPTEMBER 2016 Structure of the evening Mrs Gilligan –Assistant Head Teacher Introduction to new GCSEs and grades

Reformed GCSEs

will be more demanding

have been designed for a two-year period of

study so students will take all of their exams at

the end of the course

‘Untiered’ test papers in most subjects-all

students sit the same papers

non-exam assessment (ie coursework) will be

removed or reduced in the majority of GCSEs

will have a new grading scale from 9 to 1

Progress 8

Old:

How many GCSE’s they achieve at A*-C

including English and Mathematics

New

From 2016 all students and schools will be

measured on how much progress they make

from Year 7 to Year 11.

Based on students’ progress measured across

eight subjects

Page 7: Welcome to Y10...Welcome to Y10 Parents’ Information Evening 20TH SEPTEMBER 2016 Structure of the evening Mrs Gilligan –Assistant Head Teacher Introduction to new GCSEs and grades

What does a progress 8 Score

mean?

0 means the student has made the same

progress as other students across the whole

country in their exams

Below 0 would mean less progress than others

Above 0 would mean more progress than others

Progress 8 score=0.5 would mean that on

average the student’s progress is half a grade

above the average across the country

We use Progress 8 estimates to help track

how students are doing
