Why do we study history?
Answer on the white board.
How do we approach truth and determine significance?
1) Subjective sources (people who tell the story) = Who says?
2) Objective sources (“facts,” “judgments,” primary documents = What is said?
3) Personal ideas = What am I to say?

The CHALLENGE
We are the historians
“We often say that great figures make history, but in truth historians make
history. Great figures may shape events, but historians make the history of those
events. I am a historian. If you think about the past, you too are a historian. We make history, for better or worse. And we also consume a lot of history
made by others.” – Professor Alan Kimball
