When you hear the fire alarm
•Leave everything. Close the door behind you. You can take your bag.
•Use emergency exit and go to the assembly area.
•Stand with your classmates and teacher at the assembly area.
•Stay outside until the warden tells you that you can return to class.

Browns Bay beach is safe for swimming. Remember:• Swim between the flags if they are on the beach• Don’t swim alone• Drinking alcohol at the beach is illegal after:
• 9pm (Winter)• 10pm (Summer)

Life at Unique New Zealand
Class cultureUnique New Zealand is a school where:• Teachers and students respect one another.• Everyone has their mobile phone switched off or on silent mode in class.• Teachers always start class on time.• Students should be on time, but if they are late they apologise to
everyone.• Late students can come into the classroom, but they should not disturb
the class. They wait until the teacher can include them in the task.• Students participate fully in all class activities, including homework and
tests.• The class has many nationalities, but everyone speaks English in the
classroom.
Homestay
• Practise your English at home. • Always say ‘Hello’, ‘Good morning’, ‘Goodbye’,
‘Goodnight’• Don’t be shy• Spend time with your homestay family
Your homestay payment covers:• 3 meals per day plus ordinary snacks• Your own bedroom (bed, drawers, wardrobe, desk,
desk chair and linen)• Basic toiletries ie, soap, shampoo etc.

Tips• Take short showers• Not too much internet• Always say when you’ll be home• Eat dinner with your homestay• Use Please and Thank you a lot• Ask about NZ culture• Teach about your culture• Look after keys
Some homestay rules• Check out time for homestays is 5.00pm. If you plan to
leave your homestay after 5.00pm, you will be asked to pay for an additional night.
• If you want to change homestays you must give one week’s notice
• A holding fee of $10 per day will be charged from the first night if you are away from your homestay for 8 or more nights and wish to return to the same homestay. If you are away from your homestay for 1-7 nights the full homestay fee applies.

New Zealanders often• Go to bed early –2200 – 2300 (please be quiet after this time)• Walk outside without shoes• Walk inside with shoes• Heat only the living area of the house in winter• Do not have air-conditioning in summer• Do laundry only once or twice a week – check with your homestay family• Eat a small breakfast and lunch• Eat bread with breakfast and lunch, and potatoes with dinner
If you have any problems in your homestay and feel you cannot discuss it with your homestay family, talk to your student advisor
