Officiant Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. (Philippians 1:2)

The Invitatory and Psalter (all stand) BCP, p. 80

Officiant Lord, open our lips.

People And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Officiant and People

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is

now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Officiant The Earth is the Lord’s for he made it: Come let us adore him.

Jubilate BCP, p. 82

Be joyful in the Lord, all you lands;*

serve the Lord with gladness

and come before his presence with a song.

Know this: The Lord himself is God;*

He himself has made us, and we are his;

We are his people and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving;

Go into his courts with praise; *

give thanks to his and call upon his Name.

For the Lord is good;

His mercy is everlasting;*

and his faithfulness endures from age to age.

Officiant The Earth is the Lord’s for he made it: Come let us adore him.

The people sit.

Psalm 121 (all recite responsively by whole verse)

1 I lift up my eyes to the hills; *

from where is my help to come?

2 My help comes from the LORD, *

the maker of heaven and earth.

3 He will not let your foot be moved *

and he who watches over you will not fall asleep.

4

4 Behold, he who keeps watch over Israel *

shall neither slumber nor sleep;

5 The LORD himself watches over you; *

the LORD is your shade at your right hand,

6 So that the sun shall not strike you by day, *

nor the moon by night.

7 The LORD shall preserve you from all evil; *

it is he who shall keep you safe.

8 The LORD shall watch over your going out and your coming in, *

from this time forth for evermore.

Officiant and People

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the

beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

First Lesson Job 39:1-18

A reading from the Book of Job:

"Do you know when the mountain goats give birth?

Do you observe the calving of the deer?

Can you number the months that they fulfil,

and do you know the time when they give birth,

when they crouch to give birth to their offspring,

and are delivered of their young?

Their young ones become strong, they grow up in the open;

they go forth, and do not return to them.

"Who has let the wild ass go free?

Who has loosed the bonds of the swift ass,

to which I have given the steppe for its home,

the salt land for its dwelling-place?

It scorns the tumult of the city;

it does not hear the shouts of the driver.

It ranges the mountains as its pasture,

and it searches after every green thing.

"Is the wild ox willing to serve you?

Will it spend the night at your crib?

Can you tie it in the furrow with ropes,

or will it harrow the valleys after you?

Will you depend on it because its strength is great,

and will you hand over your labour to it?

Do you have faith in it that it will return,

and bring your grain to your threshing-floor?

5

"The ostrich’s wings flap wildly,

though its pinions lack plumage.

For it leaves its eggs to the earth,

and lets them be warmed on the ground,

forgetting that a foot may crush them,

and that a wild animal may trample them.

It deals cruelly with its young, as if they were not its own;

though its labour should be in vain, yet it has no fear;

because God has made it forget wisdom,

and given it no share in understanding.

When it spreads its plumes aloft,

it laughs at the horse and its rider." [The Word of the Lord.]

People Thanks be to God.

Second Lesson (seated) Matthew 11:25–30

Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have

hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants;

yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by

my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father

except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will

give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in

heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

receive a hundredfold now in this age—houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and

children, and fields with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life. But many who

are first will be last, and the last will be first.” [The Word of the Lord.]

People Thanks be to God.

Reflection The Very Rev. Kim L. Coleman

Rector

Corporate Blessing of the Animals

Officiant Let us pray:

Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea,

birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his

brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless our pets. By the power of your love, enable

them to experience life according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your

beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen!

Individual Pet Blessings

People may bring their animals forth to the clergy for individual pet blessings. The congregation is invited to join

the singing of the hymn.

“Holy God, whose loving care extends to all living things, bless and protect this creature

(Name) which you have put into our hands, and help (Name) to cherish his/her life,

knowing that all life is precious in your sight.”

Hymn L-217 He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands

The Apostles’ Creed

Officiant and People together, all standing

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit

and born of the Virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again.

He ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

8

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

Special Prayers for All God’s Creation

Officiant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Officiant Together, let us pray. Officiant and People

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,

for ever and ever. Amen.

The Suffrages

Officiant speaks the Versicle, People respond at R.

V. Save your people, Lord, and bless your inheritance;

R. Govern and uphold them, now and always.

V. Day by day we bless you;

R We praise your Name for ever.

V. Lord, keep us from all sin today;

R. Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy.

V. Lord, show us your love and mercy;

R. For we put our trust in you.

V. In you, Lord, is our hope;

R. And we shall never hope in vain.

The Collects

Most high, omnipotent, good Lord, grant your people grace to renounce gladly the

vanities of this world; that, following the way of blessed Francis, we may for love of

you delight in your whole creation with perfectness of joy; through Jesus Christ our

Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

9

For Mission

O God, you manifest in your servants the signs of your presence: Send forth upon us

the spirit of love, that in companionship with one another your abounding grace may

increase among us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Collects for Creation

O merciful Creator, your hand is open wide to satisfy the needs of every living

creature: Make us always thankful for your loving providence; and grant that we,

remembering the account that we must one day give, may be faithful stewards of your

good gifts; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and

reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

We humbly beseech you to behold, visit, and relieve your servants for whom our

prayers are desired, especially all those on Trinity’s Prayer List. as well as those we

now name before you.

(silence; the people may offer additional petitions here)

Look upon those for whom we pray with the eyes of your mercy; comfort them with a

sense of your goodness; preserve them from the temptations of the enemy; and give

them patience under their afflictions. In your good time, restore them to health, and

enable them to lead the residue of their lives in your fear, and to your glory; granting

that finally they may dwell with you in life everlasting; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Hear our humble prayer, O God, for our friends the animals, especially for animals

who are suffering, for those that are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry;

for all that will be put to death. We entreat for them all Thy mercy and pity, and for

those who deal with them we ask a heart of compassion and gentle hands and kindly

words. Make us, ourselves, to be true friends to animals and so to share the blessings

of the merciful. Amen.

Lord of all hopefulness, ever mindful that nothing lives without your blessing and

nothing dies without your care, we remember before you our animal friends who have

died. Receive these beloved creatures under your promise to redeem all creation.

Help us to accept the mystery of death without bitterness but with hope. Enlarge

within us a sense of your mercies over all your works and rekindle within us a new

spirit of fraternity so that we who have walked in the ways of violence may become

agents of your peace. Amen.

The Prayer of St. Francis (all pray together)

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon.

Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope.

Where there is darkness, light. Where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;

to be understood, as to understand; to be loved, as to love.

10

For it is in giving that we receive. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life. Amen.

Concluding Collect

God of the universe without boundaries of race, creed, color or species, in whose sight

every life is precious, send now your Spirit upon us and liberate us from that littleness

of mind, heart, and soul so that we may perceive the kinship of all creatures and work

towards that goal in which all things will be united in Christ. Amen.

A Prayer of Thanksgiving (prayed by all)

Eternal Father, we thank you for these creatures who live alongside us as our companions

and friends; for their loyalty, love and trust which enrich our lives and give us joy; teach

us the value of kindness, the power of mercy, the strength of gentleness, and create in us

a new spirit of humility in the face of your creatures within whose covenant they live and

die; we ask these prayers through your Son Jesus Christ, whose new covenant of love

give life to us all. Amen.

Officiant

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy

Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen. 2 Corinthians 13:14

The Offertory

At this point in our worship we bless God by giving back to God a portion of all that we have

received. We pause to remind everyone that we continue to depend upon your gifts during this

pandemic and thank you in advance for your generosity. For our worshippers who are joining us

virtually, during the Offertory selection, please feel free to go to our website at

www.trinitychurcharlington.org and make an online donation.

Officiant

to God.
