We are super excited you enrolled your child at our school. I hope to see you often. Parents are always welcome at CIJS anytime, and we encourage participation within the classrooms. We realize this is an exciting time for you and your family; therefore, we strive to maintain frequent contact with our families nearly every day. Communication and collaboration between parents and teachers is the key to success. Our primary method of communicating is through email so please make sure to check it often. Teachers love to send pictures along with information regarding the wonderful day students had at school. Please know they will send pictures of children in the class interacting, but that each individual student may not be on the emails every day. Even though we have several students, know that your little ones are always our top priority and we will show case them all at some point. In addition to the fun classroom news, the Director sends out school wide emails a couple times a month with important procedural information such as school closings, menus, calendars etc. Be sure to look for these emails. If you are not receiving emails from the Director and/or your teacher, please let us know. Either they have gone into your junk mail or we typed your email address incorrectly. Another place to find the calendar or menu is on our parent board at the school or our website (www.cijschools.com). Due to the fun and exciting project-based curriculum, children will get dirty from time to time; we recommend you provide clothes that are appropriate for these activities. SECURITY Every parent has the same front door entry code (which is changed periodically). Currently, the front door code is _____________. Once you get through the front door, each student has their own family code which is used to sign the child in/out of school. Once the code is entered, the door automatically unlocks and allows entry into the main part of the building. Mom, dad, grandma, aunts, uncles etc. will be given their own code (if they are authorized to pick up). Please do not share your code with anyone or let any family members through the door with you. This is very important for security reasons! We need to check ID’s for those who we do not recognize and also need to know who actually brought the child and picked them up for the day. I understand Creative Inspiration Journey School (CIJS) offers school pictures and a yearbook annually. I understand I am under no obligation to purchase photos that are taken of my child or pictures my child may be in.

I also understand that pictures, videos and audio recorders will be used in the classroom because they are a crucial component of the Reggio Emilia philosophy to document activities and determine the thought process of students. I understand these pictures, videos, and audio recorders might be taken on a daily basis. I understand photos of my child will be displayed in rooms, on cubbies, placed in portfolios etc. I realize my child might be in the background or play area with another child when a picture is taken and that it is possible a particular picture might be sent home with the other child through email, daily newsletter etc. to show daily projects. In addition, we may use pictures for professional development, advertising, and promoting the school and curriculum. Some of these photos/videos in the school might be taken by school staff, professional photographers or other parent/guardian. These may be used for the website, bulletin boards, yearbooks, and visits to the school, conferences, seminars, newsletters, PowerPoint presentations, advertisement promotions, professional development, social media (Facebook, Twitter, You Tube etc.) or for other educational purposes. Every precaution will be taken for the safety of your child while these items are used.

I agree to give permission for CIJS and approved outside representatives of CIJS to take photographs, video images and/or audio recorders of my child. I agree to allow photographs to be displayed in my child’s room, on room or center bulletin boards, or used as mentioned above. I further agree to allow the school to use these photographs or video images in promotional or training applications.

I understand Creative Inspiration Journey School (CIJS) offers a variety of experiences for my child that include but not limited to, encounters with live species such as rabbits, butterflies, birds, hamsters and fish.

CIJS takes every precaution to ensure that the health and safety of students is our top priority when housing animals; therefore, we take every measure necessary to prevent illnesses and/or poor behavioral traits from them. Species are vaccinated (contingent upon requirements according to the designated animal), and our pets are continually held to ensure trust and to build relationships. However, even with the best of treatment and care sometimes there are unforeseen circumstances that occur.

I understand by signing this form that CIJS is not liable financially or in any other way for any incidents that may occur with the animals, included but not limited to damaged clothing, bites or illnesses. I also understand that by signing this form I agree to allow my child to interact with the different species on the premises at CIJS. I understand this remains in effect unless a written notice is given to CIJS stating otherwise. This written updated notice will be brought to the school, presented to the Director and signed by both parties (parent/guardian and a CIJS representative) acknowledging receipt of the new request.

At Creative Inspiration Journey School (CIJS) we work hard to develop a positive relationship between teacher and child. We believe if an interesting and challenging program is offered, then discipline problems are minimal. If problem behavior does occur, we begin with a positive approach. We believe the purpose of discipline is to teach self-discipline, and that discipline should rely on inductive methods of explanation, reinforcement and modeling, rather than punishment.

a) We consider attention span and skills of children, so that we do not expect them to behave at developmentally inappropriate levels.

b) Discipline relies on explanations, reinforcement, and modeling. c) We praise and encourage good behavior, instead of focusing upon unacceptable behavior. d) Children are taught that making mistakes are a natural part of learning, and they can make their mistakes

right. They are expected to take responsibility and do so. e) Children are never shamed or humiliated. f) Yelling at children is not permitted. g) Spanking or any other type of corporal punishment is not permitted.

Teachers and parents will work together to deal with problem behavior. Please discuss with your child the following are unacceptable:

a) Leaving the area without permission b) Throwing toys, rocks, or sand at other children

c) Abusive, or inappropriate language d) Hurting themselves or others: for example, by

hitting, biting, spitting, kicking, or pulling hair Some specific disciplinary techniques that teachers may use:

1. Redirection

2. Reinforcing good behavior

3. “Think time” within their area

a) Children are taught that there is a safe and quiet area within the classroom where they can go to gain control of their emotions.

b) The teacher models use of the ‘think time’ area, and explains situations where it might be used. c) Going to the ‘think time” area is voluntary, but may be suggested by the teacher. d) The teacher helps the child identify his/her problem behavior and possible alternatives.

4. Consistency - one key to effective discipline is consistency, and we are as consistent as possible in all areas

5. Parent/Teacher Meeting

a) If the child's behavior is sufficiently problematic that teachers cannot manage it with positive techniques, parents will be asked to meet with teachers to devise a plan to restore a happy and constructive teaching relationship.

b) The parent/teacher meeting will be recorded, and the resulting plan will be drawn up in writing and agreed to by parents, teachers, and CIJS Director.

6. Sending a child home

a) If a child becomes out of control to the place where safe and constructive teaching cannot continue, the child may be sent home, until parents and teachers can meet to make plans to restore the teaching environment.

b) Fees will still be paid during the child’s absence to retain the child’s space in the CIJS program.

7. Termination of services

a) When the severity of a problem is enough that it cannot be corrected between teachers and parents, the child may be required to leave the program.

b) The school considers termination a drastic measure and would not implement it, unless the child’s behavior significantly and directly threatens the physical or mental health, safety or well-being of one or more of the other children or team members and the threat cannot be eliminated

Above all, it is our goal to provide a warm and loving atmosphere in which children can grow, learn, and grow to love learning.

During the 2009 legislative session, a new law was passed that requires child care facilities, family day care homes and large family child care homes provide parents with information detailing the causes, symptoms, and transmission of the influenza virus (the flu) every year during August and September. My signature below verifies receipt of the brochure on Influenza Virus, The Flu, A Guide to Parents:

What should I do if my child gets sick?Consult your doctor and make sure your child gets plenty of rest and drinks a lot of fluids. Never give aspirin or medicine that has aspirin in it to children or teenagers who may have the flu.

CAll oR TAke youR ChIlD To A DoCToR RIGhT AWAy IF youR ChIlD:

• Has a high fever or fever that lasts a long time• Has trouble breathing or breathes fast• Has skin that looks blue• Is not drinking enough• Seems confused, will not wake up, does not

want to be held, or has seizures (uncontrolled shaking)

• Gets better but then worse again• Has other conditions (like heart or lung

disease, diabetes) that get worse

What can I do to prevent the spread of germs? The main way that the flu spreads is in respiratory droplets from coughing and sneezing. This can happen when droplets from a cough or sneeze of an infected person are propelled through the air and infect someone nearby. Though much less frequent, the flu may also spread through indirect contact with contaminated hands and articles soiled with nose and throat secretions. To prevent the spread of germs:

• Wash hands often with soap and water.

• Cover mouth/nose during coughs and sneezes. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands.

• Limit contact with people who show signs of illness.

• Keep hands away from the face. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

When should my child stay home from child care?A person may be contagious and able to spread the virus from 1 day before showing symptoms to up to 5 days after getting sick. The time frame could be longer in children and in people who don’t fight disease well (people with weakened immune systems). When sick, your child should stay at home to rest and to avoid giving the flu to other children and should not return to child care or other group setting until his or her temperature has been normal and has been sign and symptom free for a period of 24 hours.

For additional helpful information about the dangers of the flu and how to protect your child, visit: http://www.cdc.gov/flu/ or http://www.immunizeflorida.org/

how can I protect my child from the flu? A flu vaccine is the best way to protect against the flu. Because the flu virus changes year to year, annual vaccination against the flu is recommended. The CDC recommends that all children from the ages of 6 months up to their 19th birthday receive a flu vaccine every fall or winter (children receiving a vaccine for the first time require two doses). You also can protect your child by receiving a flu vaccine yourself.

CF/PI 175-70, June 2009

What is the influenza (flu) virus?Influenza (“the flu”) is caused by a virus which infects the nose, throat, and lungs. According to the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the flu is more dangerous than the common cold for children. Unlike the common cold, the flu can cause severe illness and life threatening complications in many people. Children under 5 who have the flu commonly need medical care. Severe flu complications are most common in children younger than 2 years old. Flu season can begin as early as October and last as late as May.

how can I tell if my child has a cold, or the flu? Most people with the flu feel tired and have fever, headache, dry cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, and sore muscles. Some people, especially children, may also have stomach problems and diarrhea. Because the flu and colds have similar symptoms, it can be difficult to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone. In general, the flu is worse than the common cold, and symptoms such as fever, body aches, extreme tiredness, and dry cough are more common and intense. People with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose. Colds generally do not result in serious health problems, such as pneumonia, bacterial infections, or hospitalizations.
