Welcome to the Year 10 Information Evening
Aims: To give you a brief overview of the
programme of study. To explain the changes to GCSE assessment
in English and Mathematics. To provide you with some key dates. To explain the target setting, monitoring and
intervention process at KS4.
Core Subjects – English and Maths
English All students will sit reformed, linear English Language and
English Literature GCSEs at the end of Year 11. There will be no tiers, so all students will sit the same
examination.
Maths All students will sit reformed, linear GCSE Maths exam at
the end of Year 11. Students will sit either higher tier (grades 9-4 available) or
foundation tier (grades 5-1 available).
Broadly the same proportion of studentswill achieve a grade 7 and above ascurrently achieve a grade A and above.
The bottom of grade 1 will be aligned withthe bottom of grade G.
Grade 5 will be awarded to the top third of students gaining the equivalent of a grade C or bottom third of a grade B.
The Department for Education has decided that grade 5 will be a ‘good pass’.
Core Subjects - ScienceScience There are different pathways in Science.
Some students (3 groups) will be studying Triple Science and will receive separate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Students began this pathway in Year 9.
These courses are assessed by ISAs (Investigative Skills Assessments) which are practical controlled assessments and by examinations at the end of Year 11.
• All other students will be studying Core Science in Year 10 and will progress to another Science qualification in Year 11. This route gives students two GCSE grades.
• GCSE Core Science is assessed by practical controlled assessment (ISA) and examinations.
• The vast majority of these students will progress to GCSE Additional Science. A very small number of students may progress to BTEC Science in Year 11.
• GCSE Additional Science is assessed by practical controlled assessment (ISA) and examinations.
GCSE Option Subjects Most subjects will be assessed by a mixture
of ongoing controlled assessments followed by final examinations in Year 11.
Controlled assessments will occur throughout Year 10 and 11 and in many subjects will be worth at least 25% of the overall grade.

i-media will sit an examination early in Year 11.
Beyond this, the course is assessed by coursework.

Value of Estimates Objective Good starting point for your own targets Good base to compare your actual results Indication of your potential – but not the only
one ! – you are all different
Danger ! Averages only, not individual National, not Fulford Things – and people - change over time! They are NOT targets – estimates are a
starting point, not an end point!
If Fischer Family Trust did the X Factor…
The same estimated success will be generated for the contestant placed
third, whether:
OR…
Michelangelo…
“The danger for most of us is not that we aim too high and fail to reach our target but aim too low and achieve it”.
Useful to remember when it’s cold in the morning in December…
According to statistics:
17 days off in a year (attendance dropping below 90%) leads to an average drop of a FULL GRADE for each GCSE subject!
Are you a Jonnie/One Direction/Calvin…?
Or a Christopher Maloney?
