Real choices for a changing world

The real world is a place of constant change. Robotics

and data are coming of age. Biofabrication and artificial

intelligence are evolving. Change impacts how we care for

each other and the environment. How we work. How we

create and how we play. To thrive, we'll need to think outside

the box. Be more agile. More prepared for the jobs

of today, and the jobs that are yet to be invented.

Our courses will give you the skills to flourish in the real world.

Read on to see how we’ll prepare you for the future, and

explore courses and experiences that are open to you at QUT.

The Queensland University of Technology (QUT) acknowledges the Turrbal and Yugara, as the First Nations owners of the lands where QUT now stands. We pay respect to their Elders, lores, customs and creation spirits. We recognise that these have always been places of teaching, research and learning. QUT acknowledges the important role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people play within the QUT community.

Jump right inWhat does real world really mean? It’s about giving you

practical skills to support the theory. So when you graduate,

you can step into your career and perform with confidence.

You’ll learn from teaching staff who are industry leaders. They’re

smart, inspiring, exceptional. We’re not just saying that, they have

the awards to prove it. Courses are taught by full-time academic

staff alongside part-time lecturers and tutors who are working in

the field and bring real experiences and contacts to the classroom.

Graduate with the skills you need. During your course, you’ll

undertake hands-on learning in our labs, studios and clinics, and

through simulations and real projects. You can also gain work

experience with an organisation in your field. This will give you a real

sense of what it’s going to be like working with real deadlines and

think-on-your-feet situations that get your adrenaline pumping.

Taylah GriffinGangalu woman. STEM inspiration. Systems engineer.

As a proud Gangalu woman growing up in Far North Queensland, Taylah Griffin

didn’t have much experience travelling by plane and was intrigued by them.

She studied electrical and aerospace engineering, completing internships with

Qantas and Boeing. Taylah now works on Wedgetail aircraft as a systems

engineer for Boeing Defence Australia. She’s also inspiring other Indigenous young

people to study STEM, as a recipient of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander

Tertiary Student STEM Achievement Award, tutor, industry presenter and STEM

ambassador.

Graduate with the right stuffAs a QUT graduate you’ll be in demand. That’s because we collaborate with industry to make sure courses meet their needs. It’s also because we have close bonds with employers who are able to provide solid internship opportunities. In world university rankings, QUT is in the top 50 for employer-student connections.

Keen to start preparing for your future career? We’re here to help. You’ll have access throughout your course to:

• career planning advice

• interview preparation

• on-campus careers fairs

• work integrated learning placements

• opportunities to connect to your profession.

Focus on the future. It’s not just about the careers of today, it’s about preparing for the careers of tomorrow and opportunities that arise in the age of disruption. We’ll teach you to be curious, resilient and agile. You will learn how to become an effective collaborator and interact locally and globally from diverse cultural perspectives. Entrepreneurship is at the heart of our real-world ethos, giving you confidence about living in the age of the startup.

We’re happy to boast that more founders of startups have studied at QUT than any other Queensland university.

Tammy ButowGirl geek. Startup founder. IT leader.

When Tammy Butow was 11 years old, she thought the internet was the most boring place

ever. But now she’s on a mission to teach one million women tech skills by 2025 through

Girl Geek Academy, the organisation she co-founded with other QUT graduates after

completing an IT and education degree. Tammy is also an adrenalin junkie, breaking systems

on purpose and making them more resilient with chaos engineering, in her role as principal

site reliability engineer with Gremlin in the US.

Sam SeniorBusiness tech expert. San Francisco resident. Manager at a global firm.

When Sam Senior was growing up in the small town of Hervey Bay, he had big dreams of working

in business and technology. Before he graduated with a double degree in IT and business, he

had gained international business competition experience in Hong Kong, Singapore, Vancouver,

Los Angeles and Montreal, setting him up for his dream job with global strategy firm Bain & Co.

Sam started in the London office but is now in Silicon Valley helping solve strategic problems for

some of the world’s biggest tech companies.

Take on the worldA QUT qualification really takes you places. With a solid

international reputation, your degree will be well regarded

by employers in Australia and across the globe.

Combine study and travel. QUT has exchange agreements

with more than 200 partner institutions in 43 countries across

the world. Want to study architecture in Italy, economics in

Hong Kong, or engineering in Germany? How about observing

healthcare practices in Taiwan or a two-week winter program

with a partner university in Denmark? It’s all possible.

There’s no need to wait until you graduate. Each year, more than

2000 students take off on an international experience related to

their degree. Many receive scholarships and financial support to

help with expenses.

An international experience as part of your QUT degree is a once-

in-a-lifetime opportunity. Study with a partner university for one

or two semesters or undertake an intensive short-term program

that will:

• boost your career opportunities

• earn credit towards your QUT degree

• build up your international contacts.

Charlotte YipFinal-year student. Future medical researcher. Japan fan.

In Year 12, Charlotte Yip visited QUT Open Day and was inspired by the labs on offer and the

way students spoke about their experience. She chose to study medical laboratory science and

through the Vacation Research Experience Scheme, worked with a team of scientists and health

professionals from the Centre for Children's Health Research to improve our understanding

of burns—research that can be life changing. A study trip to Japan has opened her eyes to

opportunities to pursue her future in medical research overseas.

The future belongs to the curiousIf you have a passion for discovery and innovation, you’re in the right place. Research and a determination to discover real-world solutions is in our DNA.

Our researchers are developing solutions for issues facing Australia and the global community. Their work is recognised as world leading. Our research strengths include:

• agriculture and the bioeconomy

• biomedical technologies

• data science

• digital media

• digital technologies and children

Close to everythingQUT has two inner-city campuses that put

you in the middle of the action.

Gardens Point is right in the city centre,

beside the Brisbane River and City Botanic

Gardens. Our Kelvin Grove campus is just

three kilometres from the city and is part of

the Kelvin Grove Village. Where you study will

depend on the course you choose. Check the

course locations in the table at the back of

this guide.

Getting here and getting around. Catch a

ride to Gardens Point by ferry, train or bus, or

take an easy commute to Kelvin Grove from

the city and suburbs by bus. Limited parking

is available at each campus. Parking permits

may be available for students with a mobility

impairment.

Our campuses are connected by a free

shuttle bus, which is handy if you’re studying

over both campuses. Even if you’re not, you

can still hop on board anytime you like to use

Your future is in your hands. If there’s something you’re dreaming of, see what you can do to make it yours. For example, combine business with biomedical science for a career bringing health discoveries to the marketplace.

Double your options with a double degree. Study two degrees at the same time, saving time and money, and graduate with two qualifications in as little as four years. A double degree can be a real competitive advantage, giving you greater variety in your study and career opportunities, plus friends and networks across two fields.

Explore different fields. Many of our courses offer individual elective units, a minor (four units) or a second major (six to eight units). This flexibility can help you to expand your knowledge into fields your degree doesn't usually explore, making your study more stimulating and preparing you for a more agile future in the workforce.

Check out our full range of courses on pages 29-36.

Study your way. You may be able to study full time, usually three or four units each semester, or part time, with one or two units each semester. If life makes getting on campus a challenge, explore external options or a blended approach. For an average unit, you might spend 10-12 hours per week with some on-campus, online or practical activities as well as self-directed learning. There are opportunities to work with an industry or community partner on relevant projects during your course, or you might undertake overseas study.

Start sooner with mid-year entry. Don’t wait until next year. There is a range of courses offering entry in July. Check the online course information at qut.edu.au/study

Experience uni while you are in high school. With the START QUT program you can study university subjects while in Years 11 and 12. Visit qut.edu.au/startqut Zoie Mearns

Future business owner. START QUT graduate. Uni ready.

When Zoie Mearns heard about the START QUT program, she jumped at the chance

to study a university subject while in high school. With permission from her school

and parents, she attended classes with first-year QUT students and loved being

around people who were passionate about the same things—psychology and business.

There were no fees to pay and Zoie received a QTAC selection rank adjustment.

When she started uni full time, Zoe already felt like she belonged.

Additional entry requirementsFor some courses in creative industries there are additional requirements such as a portfolio or audition. Education courses have additional entry requirements addressing suitability for teaching in addition to meeting the selection rank and prerequisite subjects. See the online course information at qut.edu.au/study

Assumed knowledgeFor most courses, QUT has an assumed knowledge scheme. This means that we don’t use specific school subjects as entry criteria for our courses; however we assume you have this knowledge when you study with us. You may struggle with your studies if you don’t have the assumed knowledge. Visit qut.edu.au/assumed-knowledge

PrerequisitesSome courses have prerequisite subjects that you must have studied in order to gain entry to the course. Visit qut.edu.au/prerequisites

Bridging programsIf you have not met a prerequisite or do not have the assumed knowledge we strongly recommend completing a bridging program through QUT or other recognised providers.

QUT offers bridging programs in chemistry, mathematics and physics. Some bridging or enabling programs provide a selection rank as well as the opportunity to study assumed knowledge and prerequisite subjects. Visit qut.edu.au/study/bridging-programs

English language proficiencyYou must demonstrate that you can speak, write, read and comprehend academic English to a specific standard. If you have an Australian Year 12 qualification, you meet the English proficiency standards. If your first language is not English and you have not undertaken either senior schooling or higher study, or significant professional work experience in the English language as recognised by QUT, you must demonstrate your English language proficiency.

QUT Offer GuaranteeOur offer guarantee can give you peace of mind about your study choices. If you receive an ATAR or selection rank equal to or higher than the offer guarantee, you are guaranteed a place in the course regardless of the threshold. This means that when you know your ATAR or selection rank you can check your eligibility for a QUT course before receiving an offer. You still need to lodge a QTAC application by the closing date. Check the offer guarantee for each course on pages 29-36. A small number of courses do not participate in the offer guarantee.

3. Investigate the admission pathwaysYou may have different admission pathways depending on your background. You may have multiple selection ranks as well as school results. QUT will generally use the best of your ATAR/selection ranks for entry.

Current or recent secondary educationIf you’re a current Year 12 student, or have completed Year 12 within the past two years with no further study or employment, you’re considered a recent school leaver.

The minimum requirement for entry is an ATAR (or OP for students graduating prior to 2020) or completed International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma.

If you have completed a vocational education and training (VET) qualification at school, such as a certificate IV or diploma, this will only be assessed for entry if you also have an ATAR (or OP) or a completed IB Diploma. Otherwise you need to undertake additional study after school (VET or another university), or wait until two years have elapsed, in order to have the VET qualification assessed for entry.

There are changes to how IB Diplomas will be assessed for entry in 2022 and beyond. Check the website for details.

Visit qut.edu.au/apply/recent-secondary-education

Jordan's story—ATAR and VETJordan will complete Year 12 in 2020. His study plan means he is on track to receive an ATAR, and will also have a completed Certificate IV in Business. When he applies to QUT, he will be considered on the basis of his ATAR, or his selection rank of 74.00 for his completed certificate, and QUT will use whichever is the strongest.

In recognition of the disruption caused by COVID-19, we have made some changes to entry for 2021, including accepting VET qualifications completed in school without an ATAR or IB Diploma and early offers for some courses. Check the latest information at qut.edu.au/study/starting-uni-in-2021

Vocational Education and Training (VET) studyYour selection ranks for completed VET studies, such as an AQF certificate IV, diploma or advanced diploma from TAFE or private education provider, can be used for QUT entry. A good result on the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) can improve your selection rank for ungraded assessment qualifications.

1. Find the course that suits youWe can help you figure out your future. Visit qut.edu.au/study to find out as much as possible about the courses you are interested in studying.

You can also book a free, 15-minute phone conversation with our career educators to help clarify your study and career plans.

Visit qut.edu.au/need-advice

2. Check the entry requirementsFor admission to QUT you must have completed Australian Year 12 (or equivalent), or be aged 18 years or older and applying on the basis of previous study or work/life experience.

How selection is madeFor most QUT courses you are selected on the basis of an ATAR or selection rank. Course thresholds on pages 29–36 indicate the lowest selection rank to which an offer was made inclusive of adjustment factors in the 15 January 2020 offer round. The selection rank is a good indication of the equivalent ATAR.

Thresholds can change from year to year and should be used as a guide only. For more information see the online course information at qut.edu.au/study

5. Check the costsCourse feesIf you are a domestic undergraduate student you will study in a Commonwealth supported place (CSP). Your fees will be partly funded by the government and you also pay a contribution to the course cost. Your student contribution depends on the number of units you study and the band for each unit. For more information check the course details at qut.edu.au/study

Payment of course feesIf you meet the citizenship and residency requirements, you can defer payment of your student contribution with a government HECS-HELP loan. Loans are repaid when you begin your career and your income passes a certain level ($45 881 in the 2019–20 income year). You can also choose to pay your student contribution up front, or pay some up front and access a HECS-HELP loan for the remainder. Visit qut.edu.au/study/fees-and-scholarships

Student services and amenities fee (SSAF)The SSAF covers services such as health and welfare, career services, clubs and cultural events, leadership and development programs, study skills and orientation. The maximum fee for 2020 is $308. You may be able to defer the fee through a SA-HELP loan. Visit qut.edu.au/study/fees-and-scholarships

Other costs and requirementsYou may need to consider general living expenses such as accommodation, telephone, electricity, food, transport, clothing, medical bills and entertainment.

Some courses have course-related costs such as equipment or vaccinations. Depending on your course, you may need to apply for a blue card (for working with children). To find out if your course has additional costs or requirements check the online course information at qut.edu.au/study

Tax file number (TFN)If you wish to use HECS-HELP or SA-HELP to defer your fee payment, you will need to provide QUT with your TFN. If you don’t already have a TFN, apply to the Australian Tax Office (ATO) before university as it can take up to 28 days to process. Ensure your name at QTAC, QUT and the ATO are the same. If there are any discrepancies the ATO may refuse your request for HECS, SA or FEE-HELP. Visit ato.gov.au

New Zealand citizensFor New Zealand citizens (including Pasifika peoples who came to Australia as NZ citizens) your residency status affects how you pay for university and access financial support (such as HECS-HELP, Centrelink and scholarships). Research these issues as early as possible so you are prepared for university. New Zealand citizen special category visa holders may be eligible for HECS-HELP. For more information visit studyassist.gov.au

We also recognise a number of enabling or tertiary preparation courses. You must have successfully completed one or more semesters full time to count towards a selection rank for a QUT application.

Work and life experienceIf you completed school more than two years ago, or if you have employment experience, you can be considered for entry based on work and life experience.

Year 12 results do not expire once you have finished school. You can be assigned a selection rank based on past school studies.

Your professional qualifications and/or paid work experience can also be used for entry. Your selection rank for work experience may be further improved by a good result in the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT).

Visit qut.edu.au/apply/work-and-life-experience

Overseas qualifications QUT will consider equivalent recognised overseas qualifications for admission purposes. If you have secondary or tertiary qualifications from countries where English (as recognised by QUT) is not the standard language of instruction, you must provide evidence of English language proficiency. For more information visit qtac.edu.au

4. Consider selection rank adjustmentsYou may be eligible for selection rank adjustments, making you more competitive for a course offer. The maximum possible adjustment is 10 selection ranks across all schemes. Adjustments may not apply to all courses.

Visit qut.edu.au/apply/adjustment-schemes

Equity adjustment—educational disadvantage

If you have been disadvantaged in your education, you can apply for the Educational Access Scheme (EAS). You may receive a maximum adjustment of 10 selection

ranks for multiple categories including financial hardship, home environment and responsibilities, English language difficulty, personal illness and disability, and educational disruption. Current Year 12 students and non-Year 12 applicants may be eligible.

If you are eligible for the financial hardship category and enrol to study at QUT, you will also receive a $3500 QUT Equity Scholarship. All students experiencing financial hardship are encouraged to make an application via QUT’s Equity Scholarship Scheme even if they are unsuccessful in their EAS application.

Apply for the EAS on your QTAC application. If you are eligible, any selection rank adjustments are applied automatically to your QUT preferences.

In recognition of the disruption caused by COVID-19, we have made some changes to entry for 2021, including additional adjustments for financial hardship. Check the latest information at qut.edu.au/study/starting-uni-in-2021

Elite athlete adjustmentIf you are an elite athlete, we encourage you to apply for the QUT elite athlete entry scheme via QTAC. You may receive an adjustment of up to six selection ranks. Current Year 12 students and non-Year 12 applicants may be eligible. Support with managing your studies and scholarships may also be available.

Subject adjustment—Year 12 subject schemeQUT’s Year 12 subject scheme offers the following adjustments:

• two selection ranks for Specialist Mathematics, Physics or Languages Other Than English (LOTE) subjects (Units 3 & 4, C)

• one selection rank for successfully completing a university subject while at school (e.g. START QUT)

• two selection ranks for Engineering or Aerospace Systems (Units 3 & 4, C) for students who apply to study a QUT Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) or related double degree.

This scheme applies to 2020 Year 12 students applying for entry in 2021.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peopleThe Oodgeroo Unit’s Centralised Assessment Selection Program assists Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants with QUT entry by recognising life experiences, any study undertaken, skills, commitment and potential. If you identify via QTAC as an Indigenous Australian and list QUT in your top three preferences, the Oodgeroo Unit will contact you. The Oodgeroo Unit also supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with a guaranteed scholarship or bursary, pre-orientation program and tutorial assistance. For more information visit qut.edu.au/about/oodgeroo, email [email protected] or phone 1800 645 513 (toll free).

Mid-year entryKeen to start studying as soon as possible? Mid-year entry is available in many courses so you may be able to start in July rather than waiting for the following year. To check the available courses and application dates visit qut.edu.au/mid-year

8. Accept your offerSemester 1 offers are made between October and January, and Semester 2 offers are made between April and June. QTAC will notify you by email if you receive an offer. You must accept your offer by the due date. Once you have accepted your offer through QTAC, you can enrol at QUT via a link in your QTAC application. Visit qut.edu.au/apply/what-happens-next

Advanced standingYou can apply for advanced standing (credit) after you have received your QTAC offer. Students who have completed an IB Diploma may receive advanced standing for some units. Visit qut.edu.au/credit

DefermentIf you are a domestic applicant you can defer the start of your study for one year, except in some courses with admission requirements such as portfolio, audition, prior study or work experience, or where course changes do not permit deferment. In many circumstances, QUT may grant a further deferment of up to 12 months. For courses that are offered in both February and July, you can also request deferment of six or 18 months. Visit qut.edu.au/deferment

Scholarships for financial hardshipIn 2021, the Equity Scholarships Scheme has around $4 million in scholarships, bursaries and computers available for students who need financial help.

If you are experiencing financial hardship and plan to study at QUT apply for an Equity Scholarship. These range in value from $1500 to $7500. Academic results are not considered for these scholarships, only financial need.

If you're accepted through the financial hardship category of the Educational Access Scheme and enrol at QUT, you'll receive an adjustment of up to six selection ranks for entry to most QUT undergraduate courses and a guaranteed $3500 Equity Scholarship (see page 24). Many faculties provide support for students experiencing financial hardship, such as textbook loan schemes.

Scholarships for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studentsIndigenous Commonwealth Scholarships for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students who are experiencing financial hardship are available through the Equity Scholarships Scheme. Other scholarships are also available.

Scholarships for out-of-townersThe Tim Fairfax AC Regional and Remote Scholarships and the Dr Laurie Cowled Learning Potential Fund Scholarships are available for students from regional, rural or remote areas who are experiencing financial hardship.

7. Make your application countApplications for QUT undergraduate courses (as well as the Master of Teaching and Master of Social Work—Qualifying) are made through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) online application service. Visit qtac.edu.au

International students completing Year 12 studies in Australia must apply through QTAC. All other international applicants must apply directly to QUT or through one of our authorised agents or representatives. Visit qut.edu.au/international or phone (Australia Freecall) 1800 181 848.

Ordering your preferencesIf you like what you've seen here, make QUT your first preference and follow the steps below.

Firstly, list the courses you want to study from most preferred to least preferred. As a guide, your:

• first and second preferences are the courses that you most want to study

• third and fourth preferences are back-up courses that you want to study but are less competitive for entry

• fifth and six preferences are courses that are easier to get into, will help you upgrade into your preferred course, and that you are willing to study if you miss out on other choices.

Secondly, check the offer round date. If all of your preferences have the same offer round, there’s no need to do anything else. If you have courses listed with different offer rounds, you then need to order your preferences by offer round date. Visit qtac.edu.au

Have a back-up planIf you don’t think you will receive the ATAR or selection rank for entry to your preferred course you can undertake further study to receive a new selection rank. This is called upgrading.

Your options include completing:

• one full-time year of degree-level study with a passing grade point average of 4 (on a 7-point scale), leading to a selection rank 93.00

• an advanced diploma (minimum selection rank 93.00), diploma (minimum selection rank 87.00), or certificate IV (minimum selection rank 74.00) through TAFE or other accredited providers

• a TAFE/QUT dual award, which provides guaranteed entry to the QUT course after you successfully complete the TAFE component.

Make sure you consider these options when completing your QTAC application. For details visit qut.edu.au/upgrading

Ramesh's story—upgrading to QUTRamesh wanted to study QUT's Bachelor of Paramedic Science but was worried he wouldn't receive the ATAR required for entry. He was also interested in some other health courses. He ordered his preferences as follows:

1. Bachelor of Paramedic Science – QUT

2. Bachelor of Paramedicine – X University

3. Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) – QUT

4. Bachelor of Pharmacy – Y University

5. Bachelor of Nursing – QUT

6. Diploma of Nursing – TAFE

Ramesh missed out on his first preference of paramedic science at QUT but was offered a place in the Bachelor of Pharmacy at Y University. He completed a year of full-time study, passing all of his subjects. This gave Ramesh a selection rank of 93.00. He decided he still wanted to pursue paramedic science so he again applied through QTAC for the Bachelor of Paramedic Science at QUT. This course is part of the Offer Guarantee, so Ramesh was guaranteed an offer in this course based on his selection rank, and commenced studies the following year. Ramesh is going to apply to see if he is eligible for advanced standing (credit) for his previous study.

Making Brisbane your homeMoving to study may seem like a big step but many of our students say it's the best move they ever made.

Our inner-city campus locations mean there is no shortage of accommodation options, some right on QUT's doorstep. And with a great public transport network, including buses, trains and ferries, as well as a free intercampus shuttle, getting around is pretty easy too.

To help you get settled, our Accommodation Services team provides information about student accommodation and a vacancies database, as well as advice about finding the right place and tenancy matters.

There are three broad categories of student accommodation.

Student apartment complexes offer self-catering in a single apartment or a room within a larger apartment. They are fully furnished and provide a supported student community. Cost per week is approximately $500 for a single apartment or $280 for a room in a larger apartment.

Catered student accommodation can be a homestay with a family in the Brisbane area or a student residential college offering on-site catering. Cost per week for a homestay is between $250 and $280, and for student residential colleges is between $460 and $585.

Share-house accommodation provides you with your own fully furnished, lockable bedroom and shared common areas such as bathroom, kitchen and living area. They are managed by real estate agents or other companies specialising in student accommodation. Cost per week is from $180.

Prepare for the move:

• explore Brisbane life and accommodation at qut.edu.au/study/student-life/life-in-brisbane

• find out about our campuses and transport options at qut.edu.au/about/campuses-and-facilities

• check out the advice in this guide about study costs and scholarships.

Heath GabbettInternational intern. Double degree student. Employed before graduating.

When QUT students visited Heath Gabbett’s school, he took on board everything

they had to say about getting the most out of uni. Knowing that future careers

will be more dynamic and wanting to be prepared, he chose a double degree in

business and law. Heath has travelled the world with an exchange and internship

in Tokyo, and business competitions in New Zealand, Hong Kong and Canada.

Last year he completed an internship with an employer in Sydney and they have

already offered him a job when he graduates next year.

Alicia BrownYouth justice advocate. Course switcher.

Following her passion.

After studying at QUT for six months, Alicia

Brown realised that her course wasn’t the right

fit. She sought advice from staff in the Oodgeroo

Unit and a QUT career educator, and discovered

her passion for helping Aboriginal and Torres

Strait Islander youth involved in the criminal

justice system. Since switching to a human

services and justice double degree, Alicia hasn’t

looked back. She loves her course and the broad

perspective it brings to her future career.
