CHAPERONES

Chaperones are appointed to accompany and supervise playing groups and are an important requirement of the tour. They are in place to uphold the core values of thetour and ensure all players have the opportunity to play golf in a fun and supportive environment. A chaperone could be, but is not limited to, a club volunteer, a GolfWA volunteer or the parent/relative of a child in the group. They will be selected and allocated to groups by GolfWA. ALL participants are required to provide a chaperone at some point throughout the season. We understand that there are times when you cannot, therefore on the entry form there is a place to note when you are available for events.

CHAPERONE ROLE:Follow and help encourage the use of the Pace of Play guidelines

Take the lead for ‘Ready golf’. When required, voice the player who you believe should be taking the next shot.

Keep a tally of every shot each player in the group hits;Verify the score with each player at the end of the hole; Hand the score sheet to the GolfWA tournament offi cial at the end of the round.

Encourage the use of the modifi ed rules for the appropriate division. Help with rulings when you have the knowledge to do so. If you are unsure of the ruling have the player play 2 balls for the remainder of the hole and take the ruling to a GolfWA staff member following the round.

Following the round, verify all players scores. Take the group to the skills challenges to play for Tour Tokens and record on score sheet; Record the players answer to the rules question displayed for the day.

PACE OF PLAY

We all want to enjoy our day on the course and a quick game is a good game. Golf can be challenging, we know! It is recommended that you take no longer than 40 seconds to make a stroke. Our shots don’t always go to plan but if you follow the below tips we can keep the round moving.

PLAY READY GOLF If you are ready to hit and it is safe to have a shot say ‘I am ready, I’ll go’. This will save time deciding who’s turn it is.

WATCH THE BALL Always keep an eye on moving golf balls, your shot and others in the group. This will save time searching for balls.

WALK TOWARDS YOUR BALL Walk QUICKLY towards YOUR ball. Zigzagging the fairway takes extra time and energy.

PREPARE YOUR SHOT WHILE YOU WAIT As you are walking and when you reach your ball start thinking about your shot, what club you need, where you are going to aim. This way when it is your turn you are READY.

TAKE ONE PRACTICE SWING Don’t over think your shot, trust you have trained on the driving range and commit to every shot.

LEAVE YOUR GOLF BUGGY in the direction of the next hole when you reach the green. This will save you walking in the other direction and you can walk straight to the next tee.

PUTT OUT Even if it means standing close to someone’s line, it will save time and keep you moving. You can even putt out with the fl ag stick in.

MARK YOUR SCORE ON THE NEXT TEE Once you putt out call out your score but wait until the next tee before you record it. This means the group behind can hit their shots quicker.

SEND 2 AHEAD If your group has fallen behind the group infront, once 2 people have fi nished the hole they should move to the next tee and tee off.

ETIQUETTE

All players are expected to play in the spirit of the game. Players, caddies and spectators should be honest, respectful and show good sportsmanship throughout their time at the course. Follow the below tips to show good etiquette.

ENCOURAGE OTHERS Compliment fellow players and treat everyone with kindness.

SHOW RESPECT FOR THE PLAYER HITTING You should not distract a player while they are taking their shot. You should not be talking or stand in view of the player and their line while they are hitting.

BE PROMPT AND READY Waiting unnecessarily is not enjoyable, prepare yourself for your shot while others are doing the same. Respect everyone’s time on the course and be sure they are not waiting for you.

ASSIST OTHER PLAYERS Be sure to help look for other players golf balls. It is ok to hit your shot fi rst and then assist but the more eyes looking the quicker it can be found! Also use READY GOLF when a playing partner has hit a bad shot, they may need time to walk around the green, you can hit up while they prepare their next shot.

TAKE CARE OF THE COURSE Repair your divots and ball marks on the green, smooth bunkers and do not cause unnecessary damage to the course.

THANK YOUR PLAYING PARTNERS Following your round be sure to thank your playing partners, caddies, chaperones and staff.

RULESThe rules of golf can be complicated and there is a lot of information about them. You do not need to be an expert however; below are some key rules you should know to play fair.

YOUR BALL MAY BE LOST Following a poor shot if you think your ball will be hard to fi nd outside of a penalty area you should:

• Hit a PROVISIONAL BALL - Tell your score marker you are hitting a provisional ball, drop or tee it up (if it was a tee shot) and put a spare ball in play.

• Go straight to search for your fi rst ball. You have 3 minutes to search for your ball. If you fi nd it proceed with it and pick up your provisional

• If you do not fi nd your fi rst ball, you hit your provisional ball. If you are using your provisional ball the penalty is ‘1 stroke plus distance’ (distance being you count the hit of the provisional ball as well as the original shot)

YOU ACCIDENTLY MOVE YOUR GOLF BALL On the putting green or while searching for your ball:

• Replace the ball and proceed

• NO PENALTY

Anywhere outside of the above:

• Replace the ball and proceed

• 1 STROKE PENALTY

YOU NEED TO TAKE A DROP When you are required to take relief, either with or without penalty, follow the below process:

• Mark where you are measuring from with a tee

• Use your longest club (other than putter) to measure 1 or 2 club lengths (depending on requirements), no closer to the hole and mark this point with another tee

• Drop the ball from KNEE HEIGHT. The ball MUST fi nish in the marker area. If after 2 drops it doesn’t fi nish in the marked area you can place it where your 2nd drop hit the ground.

Page 9: WELCOME TO THE SMARTER THAN SMOKING - Golf WA€¦ · • ALL of your golf clubs, golf balls, tees, markers, pitch repairer, towel etc. • Take water & snacks BEFORE YOUR ROUND •

YOU HAVE LOOSE ITEMS AROUND YOUR BALL You can move any loose items around your hitting area (other than sand). This includes in a penalty area or bunker.

YOUR BALL IS TOO HARD TO HIT You may be behind a tree or shrub and cannot take a swing. You can take a penalty as an ‘unplayable ball’. Always tell your marker if you are taking an “unplayable” and choose 1 the below options:

• Return to where you hit your last shot from

• Take a drop - 2 club lengths, no nearer the hole

• ‘Line of Sight’. Draw and imaginary line between the fl ag stick and your ball. Keep taking that line as far backwards as you wish and drop the ball.

Each of the above options incurs a one-shot penalty

YOUR BALL IS IN A ‘PENALTY AREA’ An area defi ned by red or yellow markings, if you ball comes to rest in a penalty area. You can choose to hit the ball as it lies or take relief from the penalty area. Your relief options are:

• Return to where you hit your last shot from

• ‘Line of Sight’. Draw and imaginary line between the fl ag stick and point of entry. Keep taking that line as far backwards as you wish and drop the ball.

• If a red marked penalty area you can Take a drop - 2 club lengths, no nearer the hole from point of entry.

Each of the above options incurs a one-shot penalty

A MANMADE OBJECT IS IN THE WAY A manmade object is in the way of your ball, stance or intended swing (eg. Path, bench, sprinkler) or an area which is ground under repair (GUR) or abnormal conditions. You can take relief with NO PENALTY by following the below:

• Identify your Nearest point of relief (no nearer the hole) and mark with a tee

• Take a 1 club length drop from that point

ALIGNMENT You CANNOT have your caddie or partner stand in your line of play once you take your stance.

There are many more rules in golf which you will learn over time. All rules can be found through the R&A website or you can download their app. If you have any questions regarding the rules please speak with GolfWA staff.

MODIFIED RULES

Golf can be challenging when you are starting out and we want to make it as enjoyable as possible. The following modifi ed rules for our Tiger Tee and Modifi ed Stroke divisions are used in conjunction with the offi cial rules of golf and are here to help you enjoy the day.

TIGER TEE RULESTo be played in conjunction with the offi cial rules of golf.

• TIGER TEE TO GREEN - a player is allowed 7 shots, if the player is not on the green in 7 shots they pick up and place the ball on the nearest edge of the green.

• TIGER TEE GOLF - allows a maximum of 10 shots per hole, if the player has not holed out in ten shots they pick up and score 10 (and place a circle around the 10). Scores of 1 to 10 shots where the player has holed out record the score without the circle.

• BUNKERS - should a player’s ball come to rest in a bunker the player is allowed 1 shot to get out, if the player is not successful they lift and place the ball on the fairway next to the bunker (not nearer to the hole).

• ROUGH - if a player’s ball comes to rest in the rough a player may pick up and drop the ball within two club lengths of the fairway (but still in the rough), not nearer the hole.

• PENALTY AREA - if a player’s ball enters a Penalty Area it is a 1 stroke penalty and the player can place a ball within two club lengths of where it entered the hazard, not nearer the hole.

• OUT OF BOUNDS - if a player’s ball is out of bounds it is a 1 stroke penalty and the player can place a ball within two club lengths of the fairway but not nearer the hole.

• WINDY (MISS HIT) - should a player swing and miss the ball this is not counted as a shot.

MODIFIED RULES

MODIFIED STROKE RULES To be played in conjunction with the offi cial rules of golf.

• TEE TO GREEN - a player is allowed 7 shots, if the player is not on the green in 7 shots they pick up and place the ball at the nearest edge of the green.

• MODIFIED STROKE GOLF - allows a maximum of 10 shots per hole, if the player has not holed out in ten shots they pick up and score 10 (and place a circle around the 10). Scores of 1 to 10 shots where the player has holed out record the score without the circle.

• BUNKERS - should a player’s ball come to rest in a bunker the player is allowed 2 shots to get out, if the player is not successful they lift and place the ball on the fairway next to the bunker, not nearer to the hole.

• PENALTY AREA - if a player’s ball enters a Penalty Area it is a 1 stroke penalty and the player can place a ball within two club lengths where it entered the hazard, not nearer the hole.

Once you fi nd yourself no longer needing the modifi ed rules to play your round in a timely manner you may be ready to gain your golf handicap and move into the Stableford division. Speak with GolfWA or your golf club to see how you can gain your handicap.

STABLEFORD SCORING SYSTEM:

Your handicap is used with the stroke index of each hole to determine ‘your par’ for the hole.

The number of strokes a player is to receive on each hole is calculated based on the diffi culty of the hole or Stroke Index on the card. e.g. If a player has a 22 handicap then they would receive 1 stroke for each hole and an additional stroke for stroke indexes 1-4, the four hardest holes (total 22 strokes).

Before starting your round it is best to look at the stroke indexes to determine how many over par ‘your par’ is for each hole. You can write in the stroke index box how many extra shots over par you receive.

Points are awarded as per the below based on your stroke score to ‘your par’.

(Double Bogey or worse - 0 points) (Bogey - 1 point) (Par - 2 points) (Birdie - 3 points) (Eagle - 4 points) (Albatross - 5 points)

Example: An 18 handicapper received 1 shot over par on every hole. Therefore a par 4 will be ‘your par’ 5. If that player has 5 shots on the hole, 2 points are awarded, 4 shots = 3 points.

Once a player can no longer score any points for a hole then they should pick up their ball and move onto the next hole and you record a wipe. A dash is placed on the scorecard in place of the Result scoring section of the card.

Record your stokes played and also points on your card on the way round the golf course, then after the 9 holes move to the scoring

table after the round and ensure that the points are correct between the player and the marker on both cards then

sign the card and bring it to the results table were the score will be checked and fi nalised.
