With your help, the librarian can offer more individualized and small group instruction and givebetter assistance to students and staff.

You will get to know the students, staff and other parent volunteers.

You will be able to learn new skills and gain a better understanding of your child's/grandchild's school.

The number of books a student checks out depends upon grade:

The librarian asks students not to check out more than one book from the same series at a time.

Students with severely overdue books – (highlighted in red) may only check out 1 book. If multiple books are overdue, please notify the librarian.

Teachers may check out as many books as they need. If any book shows up as overdue, please renew the books.

Professional and CUR books are for teachers only.

The reference books are to be used for research in the library only. However, teachers may check out the reference books to use in their classrooms.

As a volunteer, you may also check out books.

Self Check OutWatch the Screen Carefully

• Sometimes students make mistakes typing in their number, please verify the student’s name on screen is correct.

• We do not want to check out a book to the wrong student.

• If their name does not show, it may be that they forgot to press enter, they may need to re-enter their number…or the screen is not in checkout.

Next, the student scans the barcode on each book. Please watch the computer screen and listen for the two-tone beep to confirm the book has checked out properly.

Error messages may appear. Refer to the Error Message page for volunteers to determine what to do.

Error Messages

• Item in transit.

• Item in transit & should be relocated to another school.

• Item should be on hold shelf.

• Item is checked out to current borrower.

• Item is checked out to another.

• Overdue limit reached/ Fines past due

Books may be renewed 2 times. After the first renewal, students may not check out another book until the first one is returned.

• The student will type in their ID• Watch for the student’s name • Scan the book• Error Message – Book is checked

out to current borrower. Renew?

• Enter Override code to renew the book.

Student helpers bring the books to the library for check-in. Mrs. McDonald or a volunteer checks in the books first thing in the morning.

Sometimes students bring books during class.Each barcode is scanned in the “check in” screen on the computer. We must watch the screen closely when checking in books. If you don’t see the book title appear on the screen, check that there is a cursor in the entry box.

Then books are grouped and placed on the shelving carts for volunteers to shelve.

Shelving Carts

• 3 carts to hold books until re-shelved– Non-fiction (large gray cart)– Easy (large brown cart)– Fiction (small brown cart)

• Sort books in numerical or alphabetical order on the cart

• Re-shelve books in small sections until complete.

Shelving Procedures• Sorted into collections and call numbers before shelving.

• Shelve according to the call number on the spine label.

• Pay close attention to any special shelf locations

•If the spine label or a portion of it is missing, or the book needs repair, please leave book in the back work room on the “repair” shelf or “label” shelf with a sticky note.

A book incorrectly shelved is the same as lost ….unavailable when needed.

Everybody books are shelved the same as fiction only in the E (everybody) section.

Biography or autobiography books are shelved by who the book is about.

Straightening and Reading Shelves

•As you re-shelve books, you will find some books that are mis-shelved. Please correct this as much as you can.

•If you run out of time, pull the mis-shelved books and place them on the shelving cart.

•Also, try to straighten the books and the magazines as needed. Students like to push the books to the back of the shelves.

•Pull the books to the edge of the shelf and use book ends when you need them.

•Keeping the shelves straight and organized helps everyone find books easily.

Assist Students in Locating Materials You will frequently be asked, "Do you know where this book is?" Don't panic!

You can use the OPAC station (Online Public Access Catalog)

There are also picture guides for subject areas

Assist with Inventory- we will have a lot of clean up and weeding
