WEATHER HEADLINES• What is wind?

Wind is air in motion. It is produced by the uneven heating of the earth’s surface by the sun. Since the earth’s surface is made of various land and water formations, it absorbs the sun’s radiation unevenly. Two factors are necessary to specify wind: speed and direction. As the sun warms the Earth's surface, the atmosphere

warms too. Some parts of the Earth receive direct rays from the sun all year and are always warm. Other places receive indirect rays, so

the climate is colder. Warm air, which weighs less than cold air, rises. Then cool air moves in and replaces the rising warm air. This

movement of air is what makes the wind blow.

BOOK OF THE WEEKChildren of the Red King Series/Midnight for Charlie Bone

(8 books)(Fantasy/Mystery)Jenny Nimmo

• Charlie looked at the picture of the man holding a baby, and heard the man’s voice in his head. The photograph was talking to him. Charlie’s life would never be the same.

• Have you ever wished that you had a special talent, a special ability that made you different from everyone else? Charlie has just discovered that he has just that kind of talent, and it’s not making him happy. Suddenly without any warning, he can hear what people in photographs are saying. People in the newspaper, people in magazines, people he doesn’t want to hear, secrets he doesn’t want to know. What Charlie wants is his old life back, his life before the photo shop sent back the wrong picture, before he heard what the man in the picture was saying, before he heard the strange flame-colored cat in the picture purring. Before he knew that the man had given away his own daughter, the baby he was holding in the picture, in exchange for something in a strange locked silver box. Before Charlie had the box. Before he was involved.

• CHECK IT OUT IN THE NORTHRIDGE MEDIA CENTER!!! Read the series…………

MATH: PROBLEM OF THE WEEK

• One morning grasshopper fell down a hole 2 metres deep. He would climb 1/4 of a metre every day but at night he slid down 1/8 pf a metre. At this rate, how many days until the grasshopper gets out?

Page 34: Welcome to the northridge middle 2

MATH ANSWER

• Each day the grasshopper goes 1/8 m until the day when the       grasshopper is at 1.75m in morning, he gets out of the hole that       day.  1.75/(1/8)=14  and 14 + 1 = 15 days.

ANALOGY OF THE WEEK ANSWER

• LEAFY• The best answer is leafy. The relationship

between the first pair of words, BRONTOSAUR and PLANT-EATING, is descriptive—one word describes the other word. Therefore, the second pair of words must also have a descriptive relationship. Leafy describes spinach.
