Rev. Artur Sowa, Pastor

The St. Francis of Assisi Community is a welcoming Christian family. We believe in Jesus Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit and the example of St. Francis. We gather to celebrate, to grow in the knowledge of our faith rooted in the Catholic tradition, and to recognize our responsibility to reach out to the world.

MORSELS & TIDBITS FROM THE PASTOR

Happy Easter!!!!! I hope your Easter was great and as the celebrations continue my hope and prayer is that the joy of the resurrection may fill our lives throughout the sea-son. Happy Easter to All!!! All the liturgies of the Holy Week and Easter Sunday were prayerful and beau-tiful. I hope you had the same experience. As I look back I realize that all of that couldn’t be possible if it hadn’t been for many people who volunteered their time and talents. I am so grateful for all the help and support. There is no way I could name everybody but today I want to say thank you to all. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!!!! New Associate As we celebrate the Joy of Easter I want to share with you another joyful news. We are blessed with another great priest joining our parish. Deacon Jay Suero will be ordained a priest on May 18th and will join our parish in July. Please, check the bulletin for more information, but most importantly, let us pray for Dc. Jay (soon to be Fr. Jay) as he prepares to be ordained and to join us here at SFA. Note on the gospel A little doubt can do you good. If you ever are in a “Thomas state of mind”—doubting your faith, doubting God’s love, doubting our hope for redemption—consider all the great Christians who have gone before you who have experi-enced similar doubts: Mother Teresa, Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, Saint Teresa of Avila, Saint John of the Cross, Saint Thomas Aquinas, to name but a few. Doubt isn’t the opposite of faith. In one of its forms, doubt is a recurring stage of faith. As we grow, change, and experience setbacks, our certainty may be shaken. Doubt sets in and forces us to review, update, and strengthen our core beliefs. Don’t be afraid to confront your doubts today. Divine Mercy Sunday The second Sunday after Easter is called Divine Mercy Sunday. It is relatively new addition to the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar. Celebrating the Divine Mercy of Jesus Christ, as revealed by Christ Himself to St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, this feast was extended to the entire Catholic Church by Pope John Paul II on April 30, 2000, the day that he canonized Saint Faustina. This year as we celebrate the feast, my hope and prayer is that the massage of God’s love and mercy may spread even farther throughout the world. First Communion We continue to celebrate here at the parish and this and next week we have our First Communions. I am proud of all those children who are receiving Je-sus in the Eucharist for the first time. Congratulations to all the children and their families!!!

New Associate to join parish, July, 2019 Greetings, my name is Jay Suero and am filled with joy and great expectations to have been assigned to St. Francis of Assisi to be your new Associate Pastor! I was born March 21, 1988, in Chicago and raised in the west sub-urb of Downers Grove. I was born to Maxie and Erlita, both of Fili-pino descent, and have one older brother by the name of Josh. The first time I started thinking about the priest-hood was during my undergrad. I was looking deeper into my Catholic faith and soon found a friend that would not only help me learn more about the faith but help me discern the priest-hood. I came to realize that I did not only want to point people to Christ, but also to give Christ in the Eucharist and the Sacraments. However, I had my doubts about my own worthiness. Fortu-nately, God answered my doubts through the words of St. Thérèse of Lisieux in that “God would not make me wish for something impossi-ble and so, in spite of my littleness, I can aim at being a saint.” I followed that desire and soon en-tered the seminary in 2013. Now I am about to finish my final semester and soon enter the next chapter of my life as a priest at St. Francis. I am truly grateful to have been called to serve and be part of this community and am looking forward to getting to know you all!

HUMAN CONCERNS COMMISSION

BEHIND CLOSED DOORS Caregiver Support Group To the outside world, many of us appear to have a wonderful life living on easy street or not far from it. For some of our parishioners, this is far from the truth. If we peak behind the closed doors into the home of someone with an incapacitating illness, terminal disease or dementia, we get a glimpse of the challenges existing not only for the patient but also for the caregiver. It truly is a challenge for caregivers to help their loved ones navigate a life filled with highs and lows all the while seeking to maintain compassion and tender-ness and good self care. A Caregiver Support Group meets monthly at St. Francis of Assisi, 15050 S. Wolf Rd., Orland Park. The meetings are held on the 1st Monday of the month at 1:00 pm in the Niehaus Room (enter through the front doors of the church and turn to the right). Our next meeting is May 6th. If you have any questions regarding this group, please call Char Klabacha at 708-602-2019 or Marie Flanagan at 708-687-3351 or talk to Sis-ter Gael at [email protected]

Adult Faith Formation

On April 14, two tan-gentially connected events that happened in the world. The first, Tiger Woods won his fifth Masters. The ques-tion that has been asked in recent years has been – Is he too old? At 43, after a number of surgeries and extreme determi-nation, he answered the question. In South Bend, Pete Buttigieg announced his candidacy for president. The ques-tion that is being asked is, at 37, is he too young? What is too young? What is too old? The age questions those two events raised, prompted this reflec-tion. As I prepare to cele-brate my 50th anni-versary, I have been thinking how I have dealt with age differ-ences. First, I am aware of how quickly years pass. Seeming-

ly in a flash, one goes from too young to too old. Secondly, it has become clear how, over the years, I have made judgements based solely on age. In retrospect, many of these age based judgements were un-fair and myopic. While at Mundelein Seminary, in my sec-ond year (senior year of college) the priest in charge of college seminarians celebrat-ed his 25th anniver-sary. I was 21 and 4 years away from ordi-nation. His years of ordination seemed a lifetime away. When I was first as-signed, my Pastor was 58 and I was 25 – I thought he was very old. As I have now passed those two priests in age, and years of ordina-tion I have developed a different perspec-tive. When as a younger priest I looked at senior priests, the age differ-ence seemed great;

there was a gap. Be-cause my experience was limited, the age difference remained a distance I was not able to make my own. Now that I look from an older perspective. I see connections. Years of experience allow me to see more now than I could with-out age and experi-ence. As a young man (remember this was the ‘70’s) and the cry of youth was, “don’t trust anyone over 30”. While I did not entire-ly adhere to that man-tra, I realize it did af-fect me. I would often dismiss the experi-ence of a senior. It was a time of change, but I now realize try-ing to develop new possibilities without garnering the experi-ence of those older was foolish. As I got older, I some-times offered a differ-ent perspective, say-ing, “We have already tried that”. A rather

closed minded atti-tude that failed to ap-preciate the sugges-tion of new ideas. My old age point is – let’s not “box in one another” based on age. The old have experience; the young have enthusi-asm. The old have history; the young

new perspectives. The week of April 21 I will be on retreat. I will join with my class-mates as we spend some days in prayer, being led by Arch-bishop Vlazny – Bish-op Emeritus of Port-land, Or. (Originally from Chicago and St. Gaul parish). On Fri-

day we will concele-brate an anniversary Mass with the class of 1994. Cardinal Cupich will be the main celebrant. Please keep us in prayer.

SEEING IS BELIEVING, Copyright © J.S. Paluch Co.

Seeing is believing! Since cellphone screens connect us instantly to social media, live TV, and loved ones’ faces near and far, “Doubting Thomas” could be our patron saint: “Unless I see, I will not believe!” But how comforting for any of us who share Thomas’s doubt, or love “doubters” who do, to see how kindly Jesus responds. By

offering the very evi-dence that Thomas demanded, Jesus doesn’t scold Thom-as, but seems to un-derstand such skep-ticism. Could Jesus have been thinking of us, who long to believe that “Jesus is risen!” but see so much suffering, and perhaps even cause some, that we won-der, how could something so won-derful be true? In

today’s reading from the Acts of the Apos-tles, the risen Jesus’ healing love com-forts through disci-ples who love others. In Revelation, “our brother John” doesn’t just claim he saw Jesus alive, but passes on Jesus’ life-giving words, “Do not be afraid.” See-ing Jesus in others is believing!

You might wonder WHY THESE ITEMS? Most of the parishioners are elderly and on Link cards so they cannot purchase these items with the LINK card. SO THEIR THANK YOU MEANS SO MUCH!!!! Catholic Charities Collection on Mother’s Day As an ailing senior, Co-chise relies on the help of a dependable home aide to help her with daily tasks and errands so she could continue to live in her own home and enjoy a high quality of life. When she had trouble finding an aide that would fit her needs, she reached out to Catholic Charities who worked with her to find somebody she was comfortable with. Last year 364,373 seniors were supported by Catholic Charities through many programs including home deliv-ered meals, adult day care, senior centers, congregate meals, fami-ly caregiver assistance, transportation services, the hospital transition program and more. The support seniors receive from Catholic Charities, ensures that they con-tinue to live comfortably in their own homes and communities for as long as possible with dignity and compassionate support. Please give to Catholic Charities on Mother’s Day to help seniors stay healthy. Learn more at www.catholiccharities.net. “ … We are all a little fragile, the elderly. Some, however, are particularly weak, many are alone, and affected by illness. Some de-pend on the indispensa-ble care and attention of others which as Catho-lics we must provide.” – Pope Francis

BABY BOTTLE PROJECT

The St. Francis of Assisi Helping Hands Committee is participating in the Baby Bottle Project beginning May 11th/12th benefiting The Women’s Center of Greater Chicagoland. The Women’s Center is a

non-profit organization that directly assists moth-ers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering free services which include emotional, financial, material, and spiritual support as well as counseling, pregnancy texting, ultrasound, materi-al and monetary provisions, prayers, and other aid. By God’s Grace, the Women’s Centers have saved over 37,000 babies – and their mothers – from abortion since opening in 1984. Just so you know…your nickels and dimes add up! All of our services are free to the client, so thank you for helping us help the women and families we serve! Baby Bottles will be distributed after Mass on May 11th/12th, please take one home. Fill it with your spare change, and return on June 1st/2nd This is a simple, but crucial fundraising effort for The Women’s Centers. Thank you for helping defend life.
