Volunteering

The club relies on volunteers to fill all the management and bowling roles needed to keep the club running smoothly.

This allows the club to keep its membership rates as low and affordable as possible by all.

Without sufficient volunteers’, subscription fees would need to rise depending on member numbers. Working parties

are often required, so please watch the notice boards and email updates for this.

Here are some of the voluntary roles you could help with in the Club – all roles available to both male/female:

Mens and Ladies committees, social committee, tea rotas, bar rotas, maintenance around the club premises and

grounds, green upkeep and mowing, etc…….

Here are two of the jobs where help is always required:

RUNNING THE BAR

Pipe cleaner(s)!! No not the type of pipe you smoke. It’s the type of pipe that beer travels down from barrel to tap &

your glass. Cleaning beer pipes is easy. It just takes a little methodology & a couple of hours of time.

Very simply it involves passing down the pipes a cleaning agent to remove yeast deposits left by the beer. Tell-tale

signs of dirty pipes is cloudy beer. Next time you buy a pint, at the club or in some other bar, hold it up to the light.

Our pipe cleaning is currently scheduled fortnightly, more frequent if necessary. Our usual rates of pay are pathetic,

zero in fact. But look at it this way a little bar work would be your contribution in helping run the club. Full training

will be given.

If you are interested in helping with the bar, including this task, please give me a call on 07831464448 or we can have

a chat at the club over a beer.

Mike Jackman (Bar Manager)

MAINTENANCE – BEHIND THE SCENES

Some of you will probably not realise the work that is done behind the scene at a bowls club.

For example, you may have noticed that at the beginning of the season the exterior of the club was painted, as was the

fence around the green.

Also, the old score board has been replaced with a new ‘Welcome to Suttons’ sign and the old TV has been replaced

with a modern one (if you have tried it you will see that it is much easier to use compared to the old one).

Those of you who are gardeners will note that this year we have very few weeds around the green, the hedges are neat

and tidy and the flower beds are colourful.

The club is always clean – especially after the KL team eat their sausage rolls and leave crumbs over the floor!

The bar is always well stocked and manned (most of the time) and the green always cut.

The social events are always good fun and the Sunday lunches in the winter are great.

The club matches and club competitions just seems to happen.

So, if you think that you would like to help with any of the ‘behind the scene’ work then you will be very welcome.

Please speak to me for a chat or give me a call – see the Notice Board for my number.

John Matthews (Vice Captain, Competitions Secretary & Maintenance Co-ordination)
