SPECIAL SUMMER EXPERIENCESCosta Rica Sea Turtle Preservation Field ExperienceThis summer, Chaminade students will be traveling to the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica to assist conservation scientists with research on endangered sea turtles. The trip will last eight days at the end of school (June 2 to June 9). This is a true service learning experience that goes beyond just acquiring community service hours. Current 10th and 11th grade students are welcome and encouraged to attend the meeting. Only 24 spots are available and trip is first-come, first serve. Costs for the trip include all transportation, lodging, meals, chaperones, and life-long memories. This trip is offered in partnership with Ecology Project International. Applications for this trip are online at www.ecologyproject.org.

MOCK TRIAL CAMP at Chaminade Middle School (Entering 6th – 8th grade)Come learn about the criminal justice system from the coaches of the three-time Los Angeles County Champion Chaminade Mock Trial Team. Students will learn the skills of trial advocacy including rules of evidence, how to examine witnesses, give opening statements, and make closing arguments. On the last day of camp, students will have the opportunity to present a criminal trial for parents and family. Open to all 6th, 7th, & 8th graders.

SESSION 1 June 10 – June 26 Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. – 11:50 a.m.

Fee: $325

History through Art at The Getty Villa (Entering 1st – 12th grade)Students will spend an exciting day at the Getty Villa exploring Greek and Roman myths through the depiction of these stories on works of art from antiquity such as pottery and sculpture. Students will develop close looking skills to help them identify ancient myths and the various Greek and Roman gods, goddesses, heroes, and monsters. They will also gain a better understanding of the role of myth in ancient society, and how these stories affected the lives of ancient Greeks and Romans. Cost for the trip includes transportation, snacks, lunch, and all instructional materials.

Los Angeles Audubon Ecology field trip(Entering 1st – 12th grade)Get ready for an exciting day of fun and science at the Los Angeles Audubon Society’s outdoor classroom in the beautiful Ballona Wetlands. Students will use microscopes to view the invertebrates that inhabit our tidal channels and discuss their role in the ecosystem as decomposers and prey. Next, they will have a special lesson on scientific illustration, which would include viewing wildflowers and insects under the microscopes and identifying and drawing the specimens. Then, it’s time to head out to the creek and use high powered scopes to view bird life, discuss tidal flow and the consequences of the channelization and entombing in concrete of almost all of the creeks and rivers in the Los Angeles area. Students will also engage in restoration of the wetlands by removing introduced and invasive plants, and finally go out into the salt marsh looking for larvae and collecting and testing water samples. The day ends with some lunch and fun in the sand! Cost for the trip includes transportation, snacks, lunch, and all instructional materials.

The Great Books Summer Academy at Chaminade is dedicated to helping each young person develop his or her own best thinking and ideas, as well as the skills for leadership, and respect for

others. The Great Books K-12 program help students become independent readers and thinkers ready for the diverse

demands of the 21st century.

Each academy student is enrolled in a 65-minute grade-leveled Great Books course which will be taught using the ‘Shared Inquiry’ method. This research-proven strategy combines rich texts and active, collaborative problem-solving that increases achievement in reading comprehension, critical thinking, and communication skills.

Students in grades 1-8 enrolled in the Academy will enjoy three “elective” classes in addition to their Great Books class each day of the program session. Electives include science experiments, martial arts, dance, drawing & painting, robotics, photography, and more! Students entering 6th grade can also select our popular Introduction to Chaminade course as an elective option.

Afternoon schedules can be rounded out with sports camps or afternoon enrichment courses. Extended care and lunch programs are also available.

Early Elementary (Entering 1st – 3rd grade) The Early Elementary Great Books program is a superb framework for teaching reading comprehension, critical thinking, vocabulary, and writing, all in the context of students sharing ideas about great literature. The diverse selection of folktales, stories, and poetry in the Great Books program captivates young students and helps them develop the skills they need to become good readers. This class will draw from selections in the Starting off Strong series from the Great Books Foundation.

First Grade contains three selections - Bee! I’m Expecting You! by Emily Dickinson; The Fox and the Stork, by Aesop; I Keep Six Honest Serving Men, by Rudyard Kipling; and The Boy Who Growled at Tigers, by Donald Bisset

Second Grade contains four short selections— The Rich Man and the Shoemaker, by Jean de La Fontaine; Nail Soup, Serbian folktale as told by Nada Curcija-Prodanovic; Lion and Mouse, by Aesop; and Myron, by Louis Sachar.

Third Grade contains four short selections—The Two Brothersz, by Leo Tolstoy; How the Peasants Bought Wisdom, by Nada Curcija-Prodanovic; Two Pairs of Eyes, by Crockett Johnson; and An Angel for Solomon Singer, by Cynthia Rylant.

Upper Elementary (Entering 4th – 5th grade) The Upper Elementary Great books program is proven to improve comprehension, writing, and critical thinking skills.

Fourth Grade contains three short selections- Ooka and the Honest Thief, a Japanese folktale as told by I. G. Edmonds; Letting Swift River Go by Jane Yolen; The Emperor’s New Clothes by Hans Christian Andersen.

Fifth Grade includes four short selections— The House on Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros; The Moth and the Star, by James Thurber; State of Affairs from Robinson Crusoe, by Daniel Defoe; and Boar Out There, by Cynthia Rylant.

Middle School (Entering 6th – 8th grade) The Middle School Great Books course is based upon the Foundation’s Perfection Literature Learning and Thought series anthology And Justice for All. The central question, “what is justice?” provides the driving force of the class. Readings from this anthology from the Literature & Thought Series contains literature that challenges the reader, promotes critical thinking, and encourages independent exploration of themes and issues related to this topic. Selected readings will provoke questions of fairness and justice through the ages as student evaluate, analyze, compare, and finally synthesize their own thoughts around this thought provoking content.

EARLY ELEMENTARY ELECTIVES FOR GRADES 1 - 3

All students entering grades 1-3 in the fall of 2013 are invited to select three of the following electives. Each class is approximately one hour and meets daily during the session. Some classes are only available one session. Every effort will be made to accommodate all student elective requests. Courses will be offered based upon enrollment.

Ceramics (Entering 1st – 3rd grade) SESSION II OnlyThis class is designed for students who have an interest in working with clay, and gives students experiences in making functional as well as sculptural pieces, using a variety of techniques. Students will create works of art in clay utilizing the processes of hand building using coils and slabs as well as wheel throwing, glaze their projects, and learn about the method used to fire their works.

Cheerleading (Entering 1st – 3rd grade)This beginner class is for the child who wants to be a cheerleader! No previous cheerleading experience is required. Students will work on basic tumbling and cheer fundamentals. This is a fun way to develop strength, flexibility, coordination, balance, and body awareness based on organized routines of tumbling, dance, and floor work.

Science Experiments (Entering 1st – 3rd grade) This course is designed for the student who loves science, likes to create, loves to experiment, and seeks excitement. Students will construct and conduct a variety of cool and interesting science projects while leaving their science textbooks behind. From making weird substances to assembling games and inventions, students will get their fill of science fun this summer!

Fun with Italian! (Entering 1st – 3rd grade)

SESSION II OnlyThis is a fun, introductory language course for elementary students with no prior knowledge of Italian. A range of interactive language activities will help students develop confidence and competence in the language as they engage in cooperative learning through music, games, dance, gestures, and hands on projects. Activities are varied, so that students have the opportunity to work individually, in partners, in small groups and as a whole class. The final goal is to awaken a student’s love of and interest in the Italian language and culture.

Brainy Games (Entering 1st – 3rd grade) Math, Science, and Language Arts can be such a drag during the school year. Not this class! Students will continue to develop their core academic skills by playing a variety of different and interesting games. The class will utilize age appropriate board games and physical activities to teach strong academic development while having a blast in the process!

Survivor PE (Entering 1 – 3 grade)Outwit, Outlast, Outplay! This engaging PE course utilizes and incorporates games and challenges based on the television show “Survivor”. Students will form their own tribes, give themselves tribal names, and create their own tribal flag, all in the spirit of fun competition. Only on this island, no one is voted off!

Exploring Art (Entering 1st – 3rd grade) This course allows students to explore many different forms of art to help them discover their individual talents. Students will work with a wide range of media and technique, including cartooning, painting, mask-making and much, much more. Don’t be surprised if your child becomes the next Picasso! The course is open to all levels and abilities.

Math Mania (Entering 1st – 3rd grade) Give your child a head start in math this summer as they explore the world of numbers. Students will explore addition and subtraction, and play games related to time, money, number sequence and fractions. Using a large collection of math manipulatives, participants will also study number patterns, classification strategies and beginning geometry. Basic math skills will be reinforced and practiced. This class will challenge their mind and put their knowledge of math to work.

Hip Hop Dance(Entering 1st – 3rd grade) This fun, energetic dance class is for boys and girls and will teach them how to dance like their favorite pop stars! Learn fun hip-hop techniques and combinations, and dance to their favorite music.

LEGO Robotics (Entering 1st – 3rd grade) Become the next generation of robotics engineers and explore the universe. Learn about robotics in a hands-on course for students interested in engineering. Autonomous robots with a programming component and remote controlled robots will be constructed and used.

Martial Arts (Entering 1st – 3rd grade) The course will include fitness training to increase each student’s strength and conditioning, personal confidence, sense of community and martial art instruction on how to use hands and feet in a safe, fun, and effective manner that engenders personal pride and security. Students will be taught anti-bullying strategies and how to communicate confident body language. As the students knowledge and abilities increase, they will be taught self defense sequences which develop long and short term muscle memory offering reinforcement to academic training through mental sequencing, recall, and collaboration with peers. At the end of the course the students will have increased self perception, become more alert in their surroundings and have an overall higher level of physical and mental wellbeing.

UPPER ELEMENTARY and MIDDLE SCHOOL ELECTIVES FOR GRADES 4 - 8

Students new to Chaminade Middle School may select these classes as electives, or take them as stand-alone workshops. Check the entering 6th grade courses in the summer school catalog for times and fees.

Intro to Chaminade/Study Skills (ONLY open to new students entering in the fall) Students will meet other new students, learn about the campus, and discover the keys to success in middle school. This course is ideal for incoming students. Organizational skills, test-taking and time management will also be examined in this fun and helpful course. Students will also be introduced to functions of the laptops.

Introduction to Catholic Marianist Traditions (Entering 6th – 8th grade)

SESSION 2 OnlyStudents new to Catholic education are invited to enjoy a fear-free, immersive introduction to the values and mission of Chaminade’s Formation in Faith. This class will offer a unique introduction for students new to religious education and prepare students to participate fully in the religious education they are invited to experience at Chaminade.

The methodology places primary focus on developing emerging spoken language and listening comprehension skills through daily exposure to a variety of authentic language with plenty of pleasant repetition. Activities are varied, so that students have the opportunity to work individually, in partners, in small groups and as a whole class. The final goal is to awaken a student’s love of and interest in the Italian language and culture.

Intro to Filmmaking (Entering 4th – 8th grade) In this class, students will learn how to use some of the latest technology and make their own movie from beginning to end. Students will engage in the writing, directing and editing of a class film.

Fashion Design (Entering 4th – 8th grade) This is a great starter class for a budding fashionista who wants to learn to design clothing. Students learn all about fashion design by sketching the fashion figure, creating a style book of their favorite fashion images, designing their own fabric, and drawing clothing. Students learn to sew by hand but do not work on sewing machines. The class will conceptualize their own clothing line with a name, logo, & collection.

Jewelry Making (Entering 4th – 8th grade) This introductory jewelry making class will focus on teaching children real jewelry design and making techniques such as beading, wire work, copper etching, enameling, resin, bead stringing, crimping, wool felting and much more in a fun, engaging age appropriate way!

SESSION 2 OnlyThis class is designed for students who have an interest in working with clay, and gives students experiences in making functional as well as sculptural pieces, using a variety of techniques. Students will create works of art in clay utilizing the processes of hand building using coils and slabs as well as wheel throwing, glaze their projects, and learn about the method used to fire their works. There will be an afternoon ceramics workshop during session 1; please see the afternoon course offerings.

Introduction to Spanish Language (Entering 4th – 6th grade) The earlier your kids start learning Spanish, the easier it will be for them to master the language. This course is designed for beginners to learn Spanish while playing games and discussing topics. They will be taught practical skills that can be used in everyday life. The variety of interesting topics will make learning Spanish fun and effective!

Fraction Action (Entering 4th – 8th grade) Fractions are everywhere and this class will not only find them, but also focus on understanding the underlying concepts that must be mastered before working with fractions. Students will concentrate on identifying equivalent fractions and comparing fractions less than 1 and will explore equivalent fractions greater than 1. Students will also compare and order fractions using common numerators, common denominators, benchmarks and missing parts of a whole and explore methods to make sense of addition and subtraction of fractions.

Vocal Performance Techniques (Entering 4th – 8th grade) Voice study is the secret to success for many contemporary vocal artists. Vocal Performance Techniques is an introductory course. Students will learn how to make their voice sound more powerful, use vocal technique to expand range and expression, and become more confident in vocal performances. This course is a fantastic starting point for anyone wanting to make the most of their voice. Students will learn effective warm-up and practice routines, and ways to address performance anxiety, move on stage, and use microphones. They will also have an opportunity to perform in an end-of-course vocal recital.

Multiplication Magic (Entering 4th – 5th grade) Students will develop an understanding of multiplication by constructing, deconstructing, analyzing and visualizing physical and pictorial area models of multiplication. They will practice analyzing and comparing the attributes of numbers and clarify them as even, odd, prime, composite and square based upon the arrays. There will be an emphasis on developing an initial understanding of common multiples and factors.

Cheerleading (Entering 4th – 8th grade) This beginner class is for the child who wants to be a cheerleader! No previous cheerleading experience required. In this class the student will work on basic tumbling and cheer fundamentals. Beginners Digital Photography (Entering 4th – 8th grade) Capture the moments of your life! This class will acquaint students with photography techniques to become comfortable with their digital camera. Students will learn to utilize Photoshop and will produce projects that include portraits, landscapes, and collages. Students are required to bring their own digital camera and imagination!

Pre-Algebratastic! (Entering 6th grade)Get ready for next year’s math with this great review course. Practice translating algebraic expression, solving one and two step equations, and changing fractions to decimals to percentages. Translating word problems to mathematical equations will be emphasized.

Athletic Training (Entering 4th – 8th grade) This course will include training in the areas of strengthening, speed, agility, flexibility and core fitness. This class is perfect for the dedicated athlete to improve their current skill set or for any student wanting to increase their personal fitness level. Each week will consist of a sport specific theme and will include games and activities.

LEGO Robotics (Entering 4th – 8th grade) Become the next generation of robotics engineers and explore the universe. Learn about robotics in a hands-on course for students interested in engineering. Autonomous robots with a programming component and remote controlled robots will be constructed and used.

Journalism (Entering 4th – 8th grade) Do you like following current events? Are you interested in spreading the news to your peers? This class is designed for the student who enjoys seeking the facts and voicing their opinion. Students will read articles from reputable publications and learn to create their own voice. The class will focus on asking the perfect questions, writing articles, and ultimately producing a newspaper displaying their skills at the end of the session.

Introduction to Computer Keyboarding (Entering 4th – 8th grade) Computer keyboarding focuses on the fundamental skills of touch-typing. Emphasis is on correct technique as well as the development of accuracy and speed. This course will assist all students in developing their touch-type skills. This course DOES NOT FULFILL THE REQUIREMENT FOR KEYBOARDING DURING THE REGULAR SCHOOL YEAR.

Drawing and Painting (Entering 4th – 8th grade) Turn those doodles into masterpieces! Starting with the basics of drawing composition, students will move on to create paintings from their designs. Student will work with a variety of different drawing and painting techniques to demonstrate their artistic ability to the world. No prior art experience needed.

Perfect Paragraph (Entering 4th – 6th grade)This is your chance to get a step-up on your classmates before you return to school in the fall. The course is designed to help elementary students become proficient with the basics of creating an outstanding paragraph. Students will be exposed to the elements of writing including sentence structure, grammar principals, and vocabulary in order to develop the perfect paragraph.

Leadership Seminar (Entering 4th – 8th grade) The goal of this Leadership course is to have each student develop the specific skills required to be a leader of positive character who understands his/her responsibility as a citizen and member of the community. The course will focus on public speaking, ethics, manners, management skills, conflict resolution, and team building.

Beginning Ballet (Entering 4th – 8th grade) This classical beginning ballet class will focus on each student creating a firm foundation in ballet technique. Core body strength, arms (port de bras) and correct turn out based on a student’s anatomy and muscular development are emphasized. Center work is focused on the basics of adagio (slow controlled combination), preparation for pirouettes, simple turns across the floor, petit allégro and grand allégro. Musicality is emphasized as students are exposed to a variety of both classical and contemporary composers.

Psychology of Ethics (Entering 5th – 8th grade)

SESSION 2 OnlyStudents will begin class daily with a meaningful quote and end with quiet journaling time. Various ethical dilemmas will be examined, and students will be challenged to use their critical thinking skills and examine these dilemmas both individually and in small groups. Students will practice their writing and speaking skills with fun-filled projects such as book talks, speeches and debates.

Sports Writing (Entering 4th – 8th grade) Do you love playing or watching sports? Do you like to write? This is an opportunity for students to combine two passions and perhaps explore a future career opportunity. The class will examine the genre of sports writing by evaluating various newspapers, magazines, television shows and the impact it has in our daily lives. Students will have the opportunity to write about real sporting events and create their own sports publication. Who knows, your student could be the next contributor to ESPN.

Science Experiments (Entering 4th – 8th grade)This course is designed for the student who loves science, likes to create, loves to experiment, and seeks excitement. Students will construct and conduct a variety of cool and interesting science projects while leaving their science textbooks behind. AFTERNOON PROGRAMSStudents enrolled in morning classes are invited to stay for lunch and enjoy our afternoon sports camps, classes, or extended care programs.

SPORTS CAMPSJoin our championship-winning coaches this summer to develop sport-specific fundamentals and personal-best performances. This summer, Chaminade is offering sports camps for children ages 7-14. Introduction to Performance Speaking – Parts I & 2(Entering 6th – 12th grade)This course is designed to introduce students to “performance speaking.” This form of speaking differs from typical public speaking and is the form which is used in competitive high school forensics (speech and debate.) Students will learn types of events, how to write their own performance pieces, how to edit pieces, how to perform, and how to critique. The first week will focus on the basics, and the second week will focus on performance. This course is all about improvement; you will be evaluated only on how you grow personally as a speaker, not on how you compare to others. The course is open to 8th graders and all levels of high school students (freshman through senior.)

INSTRUCTOR: Bobby Lebeda. In the fall of 2013, Mr. Lebeda enters his third year of coaching forensics. As a competitor, he placed at many prestigious state and national tournaments, including ranking 13th in the state of California. He has coached students to final rounds and first-place wins at tournaments around the country. He hopes to give students confidence and provide them with tools necessary to succeed and grow as performers.

You will get help with coed stunt techniques, tumbling, baskets, and interview skills. Girls in the clinic should already have top person (aka Flyer) experience with at least a straight up two foot extension with straight cradle. Extension can be from a one or two foot mount. Film Production Intensive (Entering 7th – 12th grade)The entire Chaminade campus will become our very own backlot as students work in collaborative production crews to create several short films during this two week film production intensive. Filmmakers will take their films through all stages of production as writers, directors, actors, and editors. Students will learn how to shape a screenplay, how to frame that perfect shot, and how to cut it all together to tell the stories of their own invention. No prior film production experience is necessary, though skilled filmmakers are certainly welcome. All necessary equipment for creating short films will be available to students enrolled in this course: cameras, microphones, lights, tripods, dollies, and editing computers. At the end of the two week session, finished films will be screened for friends and family.

SUMMER COURSES FOR HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT

AP Psychology Online (Entering 11th – 12th grade) Advanced Placement Psychology introduces the student to the systematic and scientific study of the behavior and mental processes of human beings and other animals. Students are exposed to the psychological facts, principles and phenomena associated with each of the major subfields within psychology. Students further learn about the methods psychologists use in their science and practice. This course prepares students for the AP exam in Psychology. All assignments and instruction will be completed online. Students who enroll in this course will need to have reliable internet access during the 6-weeks of the virtual course. Students will complete two “bridging” activities in the Fall semester to allow them further practice the fundamentals of the course and continue their exposure to the principles of Psychology. These two activities will also be completed online. Upon completion of these bridging activities, the student’s final grade will be released. In addition, students enrolled in this course will be

automatically registered to take the Advanced Placement Exam in Psychology in May of 2014. To prepare for the exam, students will also have access to AP Psychology review modules online 4 weeks prior to the AP exam to further help them pass the examination. The course spends considerable time describing and analyzing major theories of modern macroeconomics in order to give students a thorough understanding of the factors that influence an economy as a whole.
