CHRISTMAS POSTCARDS For the third year in a r o w , t h e S F D S Stewardship Committee h a s w o r k e d w i t h parishioner Ryan Fain on mailing out a Christmas Postcard to all Parishioners as well as to about 1000 other households in the 53147 zip code. It features a handy reference to all of t he Chr i s tmas and Christmas Eve Mass times. We are very grateful to Ryan and his company, The Mailroom in McHenry, Illinois. Not only do they donate the printing of the card, but take care of the postage and addressing as well! This year's card was an adaptation of a famous painting called "Adoration of the Magi". Many of you have asked about it so here is a synopsis from the National Gallery of Art: The Adoration of the Magi actually appears to be the product of two artists; Fra Angelico may only have started the altarpiece, the greatest part of the work having been taken up by Fra Filippo Lippi. Fra Angelico was a Dominican known for his great monastic devotion; his saintly deportment is mirrored in the quiet piety of his paintings. The representation of the Virgin Mary here characterizes his style in the pure, simple form of her head and the gentle refinement of her features. Fra Filippo's earthy style appeals to the viewer in the portrayal of massive forms and well–articulated figures. In the Adoration, the richly attired wise men and their attendants, as well as the broad–faced Joseph beside the Virgin, are usually attributed to him. While several elements of the painting can be seen as symbolic—for example, the peacock was considered a symbol of immortality—the Adoration can also simply be appreciated for its sparkling color, delightful details, and festive gaiety. Thank you Ryan and The Mailroom for your generosity toward St. Francis de Sales Parish. Our parishioners love the Christmas postcard!

PROJECT 2017 FINANCIAL SUMMARY AS OF 11/30/17 Cash Pledges: $2.084 million Collected $1.449 million To be collected: $635,000 Vendor Cost Committed: $1.640 million (not including Parking Lot work scheduled for mid 2018) Vendors Paid: $1.586 million To be paid by 12/31/17: $54,000 Cash on Hand: $31,000 We are depending upon significant pledge collections over the next 2 weeks to avoid borrowing from our line of credit. While approximately 70% of our total pledges have been collected with minimal attrition to date, we remain dependent on timeliness of scheduled payment commitments. Thank you so much for your ongoing support! With the end of the year approaching and the uncertainty in next year’s tax code, donors may want to take advantage of charitable contributions this year instead of taking a chance that the deduction may not be available in future years. Donors may also want to consider payment in the form of stock - instead of cash. When you make a gift of stock, held longer than one full year, you receive a charitable income tax deduction for up to 100 percent of the market value of the stock, including capital appreciation. This allows you to potentially avoid the capital gains tax you would likely owe if the stock were to be sold. It can also be an effective way to manage a Minimum Distribution Requirement (MDR) for an IRA. Transfer / Delivery instruction forms are available in our parish office.

BELL RINGING Thanks to all from our parish who helped “ring the bells” for the Salvation Army over the past several weeks. Pictured here is Lars Dooley, grandson of Cheryl Dooley, who started volunteering with his Grandma in 2008 and has made it a Christmas season tradition every year since then!

FAITH WITH A FACE—LAURA ZAPPITELLI Meet the new chairperson of o u r S F D S S t e w a r d s h i p Committee! You’ve seen her but even more likely you’ve heard her. You will recognize Laura’s face but also her beautiful singing voice which is frequently featured at 9 a.m. Mass. Laura joined the contemporary choir 16 years ago and has been a driving force in the SFDS music ministry from the beginning. She has been involved in music planning, playing the bass guitar, arranging, and in the past has worked with some of our teens by helping to organize youth music nights called the “Festival of Praise”. She has volunteered in several other capacities at St. Francis as well. Most recently she was on the Project 2017 committee and lent her design talents choosing colors and materials. Several years ago she started the M.O.M.S. group (Ministry of Mother’s sharing). She does graphic design and has helped us by creating flyers and posters for different SFDS events. Laura and her husband Fran have 5 daughters! Tow attended our parish school and during that time Laura headed up the visual arts program. Laura graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in business and psychology. She loves the marketing segment of business and is a talented artist and musician. She has taught voice lessons and has had her own band. She loves the outdoors and outdoor sports like skiing and hiking. We are very excited that Laura is once again sharing her leadership skills with us by taking over the Stewardship Committee. She is a wonderful example of a person who has shared her time and talents with our parish and will continue to be an inspiration to others. Thank you Laura for stepping up and taking this on!
