2 DIGITAL CONCERT HALL PROGRAMME 2018/2019 3 WELCOME TO THE DIGITAL CONCERT HALL The 2018/2019 season marks a very special phase in the history of the Berliner Philhar- moniker. Following on from the end of the Simon Rattle era, it is characterised by look- ing forward to a new beginning when Kirill Petrenko takes up office as chief conductor. Although this is not due until the summer of 2019, exciting joint concerts are on the hori- zon, beginning with the season opening con- cert which is dedicated to the core repertoire of the Berliner Philharmoniker: a Beethoven symphony and two symphonic poems by Richard Strauss. In the Digital Concert Hall we are also showing a tour concert from Lu- cerne, a programme with works by Schoen- berg and Tchaikovsky in the spring of 2019, and Kirill Petrenko appears at the helm of the National Youth Orchestra of Germany as well. This transitional season in particular of- fers the Berliner Philharmoniker ample oppor- tunity to work together with famous guest conductors. Gustavo Dudamel – with works by Mahler, Bernstein and Shostakovich – ap- pears several times, as does Daniel Harding, plus Andris Nelsons conducts concerts which include Mahler’s Second Symphony. We are showing a concert for New Year’s Eve with Daniel Barenboim, and a concert per- formance of Verdi’s Otello, conducted by Daniele Gatti, is also on the programme. Valery Gergiev returns after a long absence, and there are concerts with especially long- time friends such as Herbert Blomstedt, Bernard Haitink, Mariss Jansons and Zubin Mehta. Another highlight is the return on two occasions of Sir Simon Rattle, and with several debuts, new artistic connections will also be made. Among the top-class guest soloists is the pianist Daniil Trifonov to name but one, the Berliner Philharmoniker’s current Artist in Residence. Another special feature of this season: the 10th anniversary of the Digital Concert Hall. On 17 December 2008, this unprece- dented project went online, followed by a first live broadcast on 6 January 2009. Since then, around 50 live concerts have been shown per season. The video archive now holds more than 500 concert recordings, from the present day back to the Karajan era. There are also documentaries, interviews with musicians and lots of background informa- tion. To date, the Digital Concert Hall is a unique offering, with tens of thousands of users worldwide. We thank everyone who has visited and supported the Digital Concert Hall over the years, and invite all friends of the Berliner Philharmoniker to accompany us through this anniversary season. www.digital-concert-hall.com Streaming Partner DIGITAL CONCERT HALL WHERE WE PLAY JUST FOR YOU PROGRAMME 2018/2019

VISION OF THE FUTURE

The Digital Concert Hall broadcasts the concerts of the Berliner Philharmoniker in the best possible quality with the support of our technology and development partner, Panasonic: a company that enjoys the highest reputation both in professional video production and home entertainment. A key project of this partnership is the setting up of a 4K/HDR video studio in the Phil-harmonie with the very latest professional cameras. 4K is the video quality of the future and delivers a picture

with four times the resolution of current HD. You will then be able to experience the Berliner Philharmoniker more vividly and richer in detail than ever before. Further projects are in preparation. The goal is always the same: concert broadcasts that are as true-to-life as the original.
