Weekly Halacha : Kashrut Rabbi Zalesch

In light of this week’s Pizza Mish-Mosh soon after Shabbat, we present here some Halachic considerations surrounding waiting between meat and milk.

Although the Mishna (Chullin 103b-104a) restricts

having meat and milk on the same table, it is the Gemara (Chullin 104b) which introduces the concept of waiting for a fixed period of time between meat and milk. Mar Ukva records with wonder the piety of his father, who waited 24 hours between meat and milk, but personally sides with the more lenient, mainstream approach that one may wait until “the next meal,” seudatah acharita, to eat milk.

The way in which we quantify “the next meal” has been the subject of debate among Halachic authorities for millennia. Tosafot (104b) take a notably lenient approach, prescribing that the milk meal may occur within minutes of the meat meal, provided that one clear the table and end his meat meal formally with an after-blessing. The Rambam, in contrast, requires a wait of “around six hours,” “k’mo shesh sha’ot,” the normal time between the morning and evening meals in previous eras. This inexactitude on the part of the normally punctilious Rambam has led to a de-bate among the authorities as to whether the Rambam is saying that a wait of close to six hours is truly sufficient (hence the famous “five hours and one minute” opinion), or whether the Rambam would have agreed that six full hours was required if time had been measured as precisely in his era as it is in ours.

Both the Sephardic Shulchan Aruch and the Ashke-nazic in-line commentary of the Rama prescribe a wait of six full hours between meat and milk, the Shulchan Aruch appearing to rule more definitively with the Rama prefer-ring the six-hour wait more as a matter of accepted custom than as an absolute Halachic requirement. Nevertheless, various alternative customs have developed over the centu-ries. Dutch Jewry traditionally waits one hour, in line with the Tosafot mentioned above or because food begins to digest after one hour. Jews of German descent

And she put it in the water, by the banks of the river. (2:3) If Yocheved really wanted to save Moshe, why did she place him into the dangerous Nile? Shouldn’t she have put him on some wealthy Egyptians doorstep and hoped for the best? What was the logic behind her actions? Yocheved knew that hundreds of babies were being thrown into the Nile. She also knew that there was something unique and special about Moshe. The Torah tells us “kee tov hoo.” She put him into a basket and hoped that someone would find him, open the basket, and wonder why this child had not died after being thrown into the Nile. Maybe the finder would assume that while all the other children were being killed when put into the Nile, this child was special because he was Godly and was therefore saved by the Nile. In ancient times, some Egyptians were known to bury their dead on the banks of the Nile to allow their souls to be trans-ported by boat down the Nile. Archeologists have found a number of bodies buried with miniature boats so that the souls could be transported. Graves have also been found with larger boats. As an example, next to Khufu’s Great Pyramid near Cairo, archaeologists found a 142-ft. wooden barque they believe his son Djedefre buried so the dead Pharaoh could use it in the afterlife. When Pharaoh’s daughter found Moshe, she opened up the basket. One would expect to find a child, but she found a “na’ar bocheh.” Naar means a young lad. There was something different and unique about this child. Intrigued by this phenomenon, she brought him to her palace. The Phar-aohs were treated as gods, and this child seemed to be a god, in that even though he was a Hebrew, he was saved by the Nile. As such, she felt that he belonged with royalty. The Torah tells us that she had mercy on Moshe. In an environment where Egyptian propaganda caused the peo-ple to hate Jews and think of them as different from humans, she connected to Moshe precisely because she thought he had godly powers and therefore was very similar to her and other royalty.

often wait three hours, perhaps because the shorter winter days in Germany would have led to a wait of three hours be-tween the morning and evening meals, or, conversely, because by the relatively late historical development of German Jewish practice it bad become more common to eat three meals per day, with about a three hour wait between each.

Is there any dispensation for children to wait less time between meat and milk? This is a question which must take into account the particular child’s understanding of the Halacha he is being asked to follow, as well as the need to not overly burden a child and cause him to view Halacha in a negative light. Nevertheless, feeding a child meat and milk simultaneously is never permitted, and some separation, increasing gradually as the child grows up, is expected. Gener-ally, by the time a child is six or seven years old, he or she waits about six hours. Similar dispensations may be made for the sick, elderly, or people becoming newly observant of Jewish law, all with attention to the fact that the common con-temporary six-hour wait can be tempered by the many earlier, and contemporary, more lenient opinions.
