READINGS THIS WEEK COLLECT O God our defender, storms rage about us and cause us to be afraid. Rescue your people from despair, deliver your sons and daughters from fear, and preserve us all from unbelief; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives

and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and ever. PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS Eternal God, you have made our Saviour Jesus Christ the head of all creation. Receive all we offer you this day and renew us in his risen life, in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Almighty God, guide and protect your people who share in this sa-cred mystery, and keep us always in your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. A READING FROM THE FIRST BOOK OF KINGS Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "So may the gods do to me, and more also, if I do not make your life like the life of one of them by this time tomorrow." Then he was afraid; he got up and fled for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongs to Judah; he left his servant there. But he him-self went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a solitary broom tree. He asked that he might die: "It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my ancestors."

JUNE 19, 2016

[Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Sudden-ly an angel touched him and said to him, "Get up and eat." He looked, and there at his head was a cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. The angel of the Lord came a second time, touched him, and said, "Get up and eat, oth-erwise the journey will be too much for you."] He got up, and ate and drank; then he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the mount of God. At that place he came to a cave, and spent the night there. Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" He answered, "I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have for-saken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away." He said, "Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by." Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earth-quake; and after the earthquake a

fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the en-trance of the cave. Then there came a voice to him that said, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" He answered, "I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have for-saken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away." Then the Lord said to him, "Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Da-mascus." 1 KINGS 19:1-4 (5-7), 8-15A A READING FROM THE LETTER OF PAUL TO THE GALATIANS Now before faith came, we were imprisoned and guarded under the law until faith would be revealed. Therefore the law was our disci-plinarian until Christ came, so that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer subject to a disciplinari-an, for in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one

in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to the promise. GALATIANS 3:23-29 THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE Then they arrived at the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. As he stepped out on land, a man of the city who had demons met him. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he did not live in a house but in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he fell down before him and shouted at the top of his voice, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not tor-ment me" for Jesus had command-ed the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many times it had seized him; he was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the wilds.) Jesus then asked him, "What is your name?" He said, "Legion"; for many demons had en-tered him. They begged him not to order them to go back into the abyss. Now there on the hillside a large herd of swine was feeding; and the demons begged Jesus to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down

the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. When the swine-herds saw what had happened, they ran off and told it in the city and in the country. Then people came out to see what had hap-pened, and when they came to Je-sus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. Those who had seen it told them how the one who had been possessed by demons had been healed. Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerase-nes asked Jesus to leave them; for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and re-turned. The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but Jesus sent him away, saying, "Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you." So he went away, proclaiming throughout the city how much Jesus had done for him. LUKE 8:26-39

PSALM 43 Chant No. 2

Give judgment for me, O god, and defend my cause against an un-/godly people;* deliver me from the deceitful / and the wicked. For you are the God of my strength; why have you put / me from you,* and why do I go so heavily while the enemy op-/presses me? Send out your light and your truth, that / they may lead me,* and bring me to your holy hill and / to your dwelling; that I may go to the altar of God, to the God of my / joy and gladness;* and on the harp I will give thanks to you, O / God my God. Why are you so full of heaviness, / O my soul?* and why are you so disquiet-/ed within me? Psalm 43 Judica me, Deus. Chant by M. Camidge 1 Give sentence for me, O God, and defend my cause against an ungodly people; O deliver me from the deceitful and wicked man. 2 For thou art the God of my strength; why hast thou put me from thee? and why go I so heavily, while the enemy oppresseth me? 3 O send out thy light and thy truth, that they may lead me, and bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy dwelling; 4 And that I may go unto the altar of God, even unto the God of my joy and gladness; and upon the harp will I give thanks unto thee, O God, my God. 5 Why art thou so heavy, O my soul? and why art thou so disquieted within me? 6 O put thy trust in God, for I will yet give him thanks, who is the help of my countenance, and my God.

Columbarium Expansion Restoration work and expansion of our Cathe-dral Columbarium has now begun. The winter of 2014-2015 saw considerable damage to the in-terior of the columbarium, as a result of water infiltration, leaving in its wake stained walls and requiring emergency repairs to the subfloor. Exterior repairs to the building last summer have now resolved the leak issues and we are able to proceed with interior work. This restoration project will repair and repaint the walls and ceiling as well as replacing the subfloor and carpeting. We have also reached capacity in the columbarium and will be expanding to the space beyond the quiet room to enable the addition of approximately 100 more units.

A friendly reminder The Cathedral and Synod Offices are closed on Fridays at 12noon for the summer.

Did you know? As of June 30, Martello Street will be renamed Cathedral Lane. This change will not impact street numbers.

Outreach to Infants One of our outreach projects is the Mother and Child support Programme at Phoenix House. Infant related items, baby food, formula, wipes, diapers etc. are always in need. Please consider bringing an item to the Nursery on Sundays in sup-port of this program. Thank you!

The Honourable Mayann Francis, ONS, Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) The Cathedral congregation congratulates the Hon. Mayann Francis on receiving an honourary doctorate from Dalhousie University at the spring 2016 Convocation.

The life of the Honourable Mayann Francis is a catalogue of firsts. She was the first African Nova Scotian to serve as Lieu-tenant Governor of Nova Scotia, the first employment equity officer for Dalhousie University, and the first Black woman to serve as assistant deputy minister to the Ontario Women’s Di-rectorate. She was the first woman to hold the position of No-va Scotia provincial ombudsman, and the first African Nova Scotian woman to serve as director and CEO of the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission. Last fall, the Dalhousie School of Public Administration welcomed the Honourable Mayann Francis as its first Distinguished Public Service Fellow. As Lieutenant Governor, she invoked royal prerogative—for the first time in Canadian history—to posthumously grant free pardon to civil rights pioneer, Viola Desmond.

Originally from Whitney Pier, Nova Scotia, Mayann Francis holds a Bachelor of Arts from Saint Mary’s University and earned a Master of Arts degree in Public Administration from New York University. Mayann also studied at the Atlantic School of Theology and is the current Chair of the Board at AST. Mayann’s many awards include honorary degrees from York, Saint Mary’s and Mount Saint Vincent Universities, in ad-dition to a Luminary Award from the University of the West Indies. The Honourable Mayann Francis became a member of the Order of Nova Scotia in 2011.

We congratulate Mayann on becoming a Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) from Dalhousie University. Well done!

Music for a Great Space  with

The Cathedral Choir

 Sunday, June 19th, 216 at 5:00 PM

The Cathedral Church of All Saints, Halifax

Music for a  Great Space  will feature  music composed for the  seasons  of the  church year from the  last six centuries, by Palestri‐na,  Byrd,  Gibbons,  Poulenc,  Howells   and  Canadian  composers represented  by  Healey Willan  and  Halley.  Franz  Biebl’s  much‐loved setting of the  “Ave Maria” will make  use  of the Cathedral’s fine  acoustics  by having two choirs  singing from opposite  ends  of the  building. As  Halley has  observed, “To do justice  to these  pieces that were explicitly written for cathedrals  and large churches with  plenty of reverberation and fine  organs, All Saints  Cathedral is  go‐ing to be  the  number one  choice of venue. There’s  really nowhere else   in  the  Maritimes   that satisfies  all  these   requirements   in  one building. It truly is  ‘a  great space’.”

The  concert will be  followed by a  reception featuring spar‐kling white  wine  and food prepared by the  Cathedral Choir mem‐bers  whose  musical gifts  are matched only by their culinary skills.

Tickets  are $20, both in advance  and at the  door. They can be  purchased at www.tickethalifax.com and at Bookmark,  on  the corner of Spring Garden Road and South Park Street (902‐423‐0418),  or from your friendly local Cathedral Choir chorister.
